Verizon To Offer Portable 3G/Wi-Fi Router
Rebranded Novatel MiFi 2200 dropping soon....
by Karl Bode Tuesday 31-Mar-2009 tags: business · wireless · hardware · Verizon Wireless Broadband
Back when 3G to Wi-Fi routers first started to emerge back in 2005, Verizon liked to grumble about how such devices were against your terms of service, a wireless exec at the time complaining about how EVDO was for a single person, not "an entire neighborhood." It's now 2009, such devices are even more commonplace, and Verizon has apparently found a solution to the problem: start offering a 3G/Wi-Fi router of their own. According to PhoneArena, Verizon is getting ready to launch a device called the "MiFi 2200," which is a re-branded version of the slim and sexy Novatel MiFi. Whether the device comes from Verizon or a third party, you'll still of course bump into Verizon's 5GB monthly bandwidth cap.

3G access still too slow to support multiple users

In theory these mobile 3G/WiFi routers sound like a good thing. But 3G speeds are currently just barely adequate for 1 user/device at a time. If you feel the need to share that barely adequate 3G speed with 2 or more users, most people will be frustrated beyond belief to say the least. Maybe when 3G speeds start getting much better than they are now, these 3G/WiFi router would make some sense.

It depends which 3G, regular 3G is something like 384, but HSDPA is something like 1.5 M.

Re: 3G access still too slow to support multiple users

Believe it or not, I've broken 2 Mbps down while tethering with my BlackBerry on Alltel. Granted it was a one time occasion, but I usually average just under 1 Mbps around Tampa Bay. But down at Grandma's (a large retirement area in South FL) I always get at least 1.5 Mbps down.

The problem is the crappy 100-130 Kbps upload and the high ping times of at least 100 ms. Still, at least on Alltel, I think their EVDO could easily support 2-4 users with a fairly decent connection.

Application Example

I am using AT&T as the 3G provider mostly because the company already had an AT&T account.

Anyway, I have a remote site with 1-3 users and one SIP Phone. The site cannot be serviced by cable or DSL so 3G was the only way to go. So through consultation with AT&T our company purchase a 3G card and a 3G wireless Linksys router. It seems to work fine. I have the one permanent user using a VPN tunnel and remoting into our site and of course the phone uses about 80K of the bandwidth. Everything is fine and we are still plenty under the 5G monthly maximum.

It depends on what you use it for. Obviously this is not for watching streaming video or downloading massive files all the time. Just casual surfing and checking e-mail.

TOS

Doesn't the TOS still have the no sharing, no resale, and no unreasonable usage/no 24/7 connection clauses?

Why ?

Well the 5 GB cap makes this absolutely useless.

Re: Why ?

Why does the 5 GB cap make this useless. I've been using a Cradlepoint CTR-32A for about a year now with a Sprint mobile broadband USB modem.

I've got 3 (count 'em) computers running off of it - 1 desktop and 2 laptops. I telecommute 2 to 3 days per week running a VPN to work (Virtual Desktop). Wife and child using the net to check mail, surf web, play some games (Webkinz, Nickelodeon stuff).

Never, ever come close to 5GB.

WM wifi router anyone?

this seems like just another device that doesnt needs to just be included in another device. i run a program called wmwifirouter on my att tilt. it turns the phone into a full on wifi router(with security) sharing my 3G connecttion. most days i come to work, start the router program, plug it in then just leave it running all day. i use it for my netbook or laptop for internet and file sharing between devices over the wlan. i even let a few of my co-workers tap into it if it is up.

it was a $30 one time purchase at www.wmwifirouter.com it was well worth the money, and i bet a lot cheaper than this thing.

Fine and dandy for those of you that own a phone that will do this. But I bet the majority of the people cannot. So it just might make sense for a majority of the people.

Re: WM wifi router anyone?

thats fine but rather than paying for this device(for howeve much it will cost) and haveing a second device on your cell phone account for likely another $60+ dollars per month with a 2 year contract...just replace your phone with one that CAN do this for less money and more functionality.

5 gb Cap

I've always viewed this as a supplemental vs. primary ISP provider. But, for some it can work primary. Needless to say, 5 gb cap / and over 50 bucks a month, no way that's gonna happen. Too pricey for most to have as a secondary mobile, travel option, and definitely not enough usage bandwidth at 5 gb per month to serve as primary. On our primary, we have 3 computers, and easily run in the 5-15gb per month range. What's the big deal with 5gb per month caps on this? And why does each wireless carrier copy the other. One has 5, they all have 5. Kinda stupid. I believe my sister has Cricket, and she's unlimited on that for mobile broadband, for maybe 40 bucks a month? Typical case of WAY overcharging, and setting caps TOO low. Ripoff. What's wrong with these copy cat companies, going with say, 15 or 20 gb caps. Is it THAT much more? That would make a nice difference. Then again, these are the same cell companies, that charge ridiculous amounts for bytes of "text" data.

Re: 5 gb Cap

Cricket advertises "unlimited," but if you read it's fine print it says "5GB per month cap." Cricket, afterall, is just running on Sprint's 3G network (and Sprint has a 5GB).

According to the carriers, 5GB is the "magic number" because somewhere north of 95% of their customers use that amount or less of data services per month. So most of their customers are UNaffected by the cap. (obviously, I've got no way of knowing whether that number is true; but it is what they say).

Again, I've been running on "metered internet" for nearly 3 years - first with Hughesnet and now with Sprint mobile broadband.

Never, ever hit the 5GB limit. Of course, I'm not downloading movies from Netflix or gorging on Hulu. But, I can live without those.
