1 edit | Re: woe is me! The good thing about having a TV franchise is that Verizon now will be more prone to expedite buildout since it will be able to offer customers triple play versus only FIOS internet and telephone.
To be honest,if FIOS internet became available to me now, I probably wouldn't take it since I am happy with Comcast's 6 megabit service that I have for $30 for a year.
If FIOS TV became available immediately however, I would dump Comcrap and subscribe to both FIOS internet and FIOS TV.

How did your internet rate go down to $30/mo for a year? Did you threaten to cancel and switch to DSL due to the high price and were given a lower rate to keep you as a customer?

They have a hard time getting DSL to rural areas, what makes anyone think they'll get fiber there? Well.. Fiber is actually easier to get to rural areas than DSL is.. DSL has distance limits, Fiber does not, It's just comes down to if Verizon wants to spend the extra money to wire an area where they will potentially have little or no customers.

However, Verizon, or any other provider for that matter, have had similar opportunities to make an investment to get DSL out to farmer Bob and his relatives. They've just chose not too. I still stand by my prediction that farmer Bob, et all, will not see fiber.

| Man, that bubba is everywhere. Example for all you Mo.Co. residents. My folks have FIOS in Ashton; but I can't get in G'burg. I think is because the infrasture for CATV/DSL is already in my area, but not in new McMansion neighbors with 5 acres and a well. | |

My guess is that they will wire up Coumbia, parts of Ellicott City and the Centenial area first (where the money is at.)
The rest of the county will just have to wait.
I saw this on the news last night and they were more interested in banning smoking is bars than this. Verizon even had a bunch of their employees pack the meeting with FIOS buttons on.

And about the news part.. For one, news is more concerned about crap that no one even cares about (or shouldn't care about), why even watch it? ...Secondly.. Baltimore news... YUCK! -- »pbj.bf2m.com

| I agree; just like the time they promised all of PA would be wired with fiber by 2007. Instead tax payers get ripped off in the billions and the whole state has yet to see DSL. At least it's only county and not an entire state. | When will it reach Anne Arundel County? I remember it took the cable company a long time to finally run cable up my street when I was younger. A friend that lived a mile away had cable 6 years before they got to my street. Maybe Anne Arundel County will drive a harder bargain with Verizon than Howard County. Wire the whole county in 5 years! (lol)
I hope it's quicker. Comcast is raising their prices for everyone again to help pay for services that I don't subscribe to. What ever happened to charge more for the newer services? Now they just make all existing customers pay for it. I can't wait for some real competition to exist.

| Re: When will it reach Anne Arundel County? Its weird, it seems as if in Howard County the franchise is at the county level versus in Prince Georges County, Maryland, its done at the local level because the City of Bowie in Prince Georges County has been negotiating with Verizon for sometime now. A franchise vote is expected shortly. | |

| FIOS is available in my area. I am about 20 minutes from town in the burbs of Edgewater. As far as I know it has only been available here since about the beginning of the year. I wouldn't call my area "urban" though. If you want mail we have to use the Edgewater zip to get mail. Used to be if we used a local zip we could get a PO Box but they got rid of the Post Office here a few years ago. So now even PO Boxes we have to go to Edgewater for.
From what I understand though, Verizon is bringing FIOS to those with overhead lines first cuz they are easier to run lines to. Then after they start rolling in the dough they will add those underground folks. That is at least my understanding.

Sorry you'll have to forgive me if I'm only thinking of myself(Montgomery County)... which I am. You think they would have gone after the TV deal in places that they've already got the internet service up and running, which is why I kinda hoped when I got the internet service that an announcement of available TV service wouldn't be too far behind...

| BaltimoreSun's take Ah the local Baltimore Sun article states:
"The Verizon cable television franchise approved in Howard County on Tuesday night is likely just the first of many incursions into cable company Comcast's reign in Maryland, where it is now in 16 of 24 jurisdictions. Verizon also is preparing to venture into Anne Arundel, Montgomery and Prince George's counties."
