Verizon To Sell EVDO Samsung Tablet Nov. 11
$600, with 3G plans starting at $20 for 1 GB
Following last year's carrier hype surrounding 3G-embedded subsidized netbooks (which apparently didn't sell that well despite said hype) we're now seeing carriers hyping tablet computers, as both carriers and hardware makers try to piggyback on the success of the iPad. The first serious iPad competitor could be the Samsung Galaxy Tab, a CDMA/EVDO ready version of which Verizon today announced they'll begin selling November 11 for $600. Verizon didn't announce 3G data plans for the Samsung today, though they should mirror the plans they unveiled last week when they announced they'd soon be selling the Apple iPad: 1 GB of usage for $20 ($20 each additional GB), 3GB for $35 ($10 each additional GB), and $50 for 5GB ($10 each additional GB).

Price is wrong..

I thought $700 was a little pricey for a 16GB tablet.

In fact, it is. The pres released linked to in the above headline states Verizon will be selling this device for $599....

I know it's only a $101 difference, but $599 sure does sound like a lot less than $700.

Re: Price is wrong..

599 for the device plus 20 dollars for 1GB! lol Holy shit.

1GB for 20 dollars, that is almost laughable.

Eh, just cancel that kitchen remodel so you can afford to stream Netflix HD films.

Do what most will do. Only stream videos at WiFi sites; not over 3G.

Tech savvy people will do that. "Most" people don't even know what a gigabyte is, much less what network they're connected to.

Unless you've got T-Mobile HSPA+ where you live and then you don't have to worry

ha, that just seems like so much money for so little.

That is almost as bad as ATT who I believe is at 15 dollars for 200MB?

Do you really believe that is a good deal? That is what I am saying, way to over priced

Re: Price is wrong..

Wait till 4g becomes widespread and broadband becomes cheaper. When first mobile phones appeared (1G), you had to pay few dollars a minute to make a call and one cell site in an area could handle only few people (no more than 8 or less, more or less around that number).

Back in those days landline phone was much more cheaper and more often used. This time wireless broadband will not replace wired for most people and I am not talking about data cap but speed, latency and reliability. It will be used along with fixed broadband.

Did TV OTA antenna replaced cable or will it ever replace no? It was opposite. Satellite? Not really, for VOD you still need landline connection and in the event of storm the quality drops.

Last I checked, 5GB for any laptop stick is $60.

Is it a good deal? That depends on how valuable mobile data is to you.

By x-mas there will be a flood of tablets on the market, these will probly drop to 299 or cheaper, especially for wifi only version.
I'd like a non mac tablet but it'll have to be a lot cheaper than a net-top.

Price is out of line

Still too expensive for a 7 in device. Ipad is bigger and cheaper for some versions. Wish them luck.

And you can get a 15in screen on a laptop for $399.

Good luck holding an iPad in one hand while standing for an hour.

Jobs was right...

With a price like that and the amount of crapware Verizon is shoving onto it, it's DOA.

Try again Sammy.

Maybe Jobs is worried about these tablets as competitors though. He spent 5 mins in a rant against them is Apples qtrly earning conference:

Non-starter

Too small and too expensive
Until they sell 3G connections that can be shared among multiple devices, ie 1 plan with 5 gb that you can use with either your smartphone, tablet or netbook the only kind of tablet I'd be interested in a wifi only tablet which I'd then tether to my smartphone over wifi for free

They do. It is called a MiFi. And they also have a Fivespot.

Re: Non-starter

I meant a plan that natively collects all 3G devices with individual sim cards into 1 plan, not that which involves me carrying around an extra device.

since it's Android, it's no doubt going to be rooted and wifi sharing will get loaded onto it.

Yeah, Samsung and Verizon screwed this up..

I don't expect this to sell well. Especially with the playbook from RIM coming out which looks superior in every way.

So far, the only tablet that looks nice is the RIM Playbook. Let's talk again in Jan during CES and see the beauty of the HP PalmPad =)

Will this kill the iPad?

Surely this overpriced tablet, with an expensive data plan will SURELY overtake the iPad. Seriously, what is Samsung thinking here?

They need MORE features, BETTER quality, AND A LOWER PRICE to beat the iPad...good lord my heads about to exPL.......................
