Verizon To Show First NFL Game In 3D
Preseason game between Giants and Patriots
by Karl Bode Friday 13-Aug-2010 tags: Video · business · alternatives · Verizon FiOS
If you think 3D TV is little more than a new old gimmick that requires annoying glasses and a new television, you might want to skip this post. If you think 3DTV is a compelling product, you might be interested to note that Verizon has been working with the New York Football Giants on broadcasting the first ever NFL game in 3D (well, preseason, anyway). Verizon will be showing the September 2 preseason match-up between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots in 3D to FiOS TV customers. If you recall, Verizon earlier this year called similar cable "first ever" 3D sports efforts "hype," and insisted they'd be ramping up their own 3D efforts ahead of the 2010 holiday season.

3D still in Beta vs VHS phase

Still too soon to be investing money in 3D capable tv sets yet. Standards for 3d are still in flux; the sets are expensive; and wearing nausea inducing special glasses to watch(and a separate pair for every person) is more trouble than it is worth.
A discussion on tradeoffs:

Me, I'll wait for a projector set that will transmit a 3D hologram in to the center of the room everyone in it can watch without special glasses.

Re: 3D still in Beta vs VHS phase

The price will continue to drop as the more folks climb on board (just waiting for folks to show up and start the "it's just a fad" posts *grin*). The cost of adding 3D to an existing design is fairly low and the dramatic price difference between similar models is largely artificial.

I've had 3D in my home theatre for ten years and the latest systems work beautifully. I agree, a standardized system would help things quite a bit, but so long as the content works with all the systems across the board (which they do, unlike the format wars of yore) no one's investment is really at risk.

I don't think 3D TV will vanish, it's here to stay. The problem, in the current iteration, is that it will remain in the realm of niche. There are simply far too many serious issues to consider for this to become common in every home.

The best TVs being sold now all come with 3D capability. This does not necessarily mean that those 3D TVs were being purchased primarily because they could process 3D, they were just the nicest TVs available.

Eventually, the prices will come down and 3D will be integrated into practically every TV sold. That does not mean that every cable/satellite provider will be able to show 3D content on every channel. I see perhaps a few 3D channels made available for major events, and possibly a premium movie channel if enough content is created to warrant such a dedicated channel.

If they can come up with a standard for the glasses so they will work across every brand, that would certainly help. That, or they come down in price to allow people to have a Superbowl party where everyone with 2 working eyes and an astronaut's equilibrium can enjoy it.

I can't wait to get a holographic graphics card for my PC that will do the same thing. Of course it'll probably require a 16 core CPU and 64 GB of ram, not to mention a 128 bit OS.

If Vista can run on that, I don't see how this can't churn through it.

All TVs are 3D capable. It just requires a tuner that can broadcast an IR signal to your LCD Shutter glasses.

HDTV is as 60 fps so if you have a 120hz tv you are good to go. 3D movies are 24 fps which scales evenly to 120 hz.

If you have less than 120hz you can still watch 3D HDTV it just will have a lower framerate. Any old tube TV that is 30 fps can also display 3D HDTV if your get a 3D HDTV tuner for it.

Also 3D with lcd shutter glasses is not in beta. It has been done for a long time even for home use. Sega Genesis had 3D video games with LCD shutter glasses in the late 80s. Computers have had LCD shutter glasses for games or even to make your own 3D movies/pictures since the 90s.

The people that get nausia and sick from 3D are the same people that get motion sickness driving in the back seat of a car. 3D does not make you sick.

It doesn't solve a problem

It's a fad. It doesn't solve any problems (but creates a few.)

WIRELESS TV!! - No source cable and No power cable - live and on demand. Now that solves problems.

You can get the wireless source now. It is called broadcast TV.

Space

The big prb (as I see it) with 3d TV is the amount of bandwidth the damn channels take up on systems which are already out of room for HD adds (mpeg2 systems that is)

Well at least you only have to wait until 2050. Here in Cheyenne Fios will be the installed the day before the asteroid hits in 2182.

Well, a large asteroid impact would likely result in a large dispersal of new glass.

what about people who dont have a hdtv yet?

What about people like my parents and grandparents who don't have hdtv yet? Should they get an hdtv since they should be dirt cheap soon or wait for the pricier 3dtv?

Re: what about people who dont have a hdtv yet?

Personally I don't like 3d tv. So I would ask them if they like watching that type of film. I am buying a 60inch plasma within the next month and it's going to be a regular HDTV. I just don't like watching 3d.

Any tv can display the 3D HDTV with an external tuner sending the signals to the LCD shutter glasses.
It is best to have a 120 hz TV or higher otherwise you will lose frames.
You can display 3D HDTV on an old tube TV if you wanted to (at much lower fps/resolution).

Right now they are putting the tuners in TVs to sell them for $1000s extra. I am not sure if you can buy an external 3D HDTV tuner yet, but you can currently use your computer as an external 3D HDTV tuner now.

3D Fios?

Could care less for 3D. Just bring me FIOS PERIOD!

Verizon could better spend research and marketing dollars on rollout and be way ahead. I would switch in a heartbeat.
