'Phone as remote control' functionality coming soon....
11:41AM Thursday Aug 20 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: business · bandwidth · telco · Verizon FIOS
As we recently noted, Verizon's only just started considering offering discounts for users who bundle FiOS and wireless service, something that seems like a no-brainer. The company this week is also highlighting some mobile phone FiOS integration functionality they've been cooking up in the big red laboratory. According to Dow Jones, the company will soon give FiOS the customers to use any Wi-Fi-enabled phone as a FiOS set top remote control. So far it looks like only Verizon Wireless phones will work -- though the company says they're "thinking about other carrier devices." Can we place shift via cell phone yet?

Unfortunately this uses wi-fi, and the popular new Verizon BlackBerry phones like the Storm, Tour, and Curve do not have that capability.

So you have to get a new Verizon Wireless Phone in order to do this. Marketing.....

Actually they will be using the Cell towers and inter grading them into the fios so you can do that so no Wi-FI needed.(told by a Verizon rep.)

Do not believe a lot that Verizon Reps tell you as it makes absolutely no technical sense.

INTEGRATING
the two together would be like putting water in your gas lawn mower because the lawn needs watering as part of the growth process.
Fios is a land based internet connection (part of it) which could use your wifi router at home, connected to the FiOS service so your now wifi enabled phone can do this.
The cell towers are CDMA and use the Verizon Proprietary EVDO technology which uses their "data" plan.

Re: gotta love the irony

Why would I want to use my cell phone as a remote?

TCPIP Control

More than likely, this will be some type of TCPIP control via MOCA on your own LAN. That's going to be the only way for it to happen and keep the key press to STB latency low. Having said that, it shouldn't be too difficult to sniff the protocol and add it to other devices. Honestly, it's something they should document anyways for the custom integration market of home theater / home automation.

VOD + reminders.

I need fios tv first, but i'd want chanell guide navigation with reminder feature & VOD functionality where you can set titles to wait for you saving tons of time.
