Verizon Trimmed Investment By $2 Billion In 2010
Making threats to trim investment rather hollow..
by Karl Bode Tuesday 24-Aug-2010 tags: coverage · business · consumers
Though it doesn't get talked about much, we've explored in the past how AT&T and Verizon have slowed (in Verizon's case all-but stopped) next-generation broadband deployment. Dave Burstein digs through the numbers to note that Verizon cut wireline capital spending by about two billion so far this year, and has cut back investment by about $7 billion over four years. AT&T's slowed U-Verse projections several times, and cut U-Verse investment by about 1/3 last year. Burstein suggests they're gunning for government funds:

These multi-billion dollar cuts came after the U.S. enacted a stimulus program and now is talking about huge subsidies supposedly for broadband. Ivan is a smart guy who told investors that he thinks the government will pay up if he doesn't invest. The stimulus, as Tom Hazlett predicted, resulted in fewer new broadband connections as company after company reduced spending hoping the government will pay instead. Verizon is claiming 20-30% of their lines require a subsidy and asking for billions or they might discontinue voice service. Ironically, V & T just reassured wall street their wireline margins are staying up.

AT&T and Verizon didn't apply for stimulus funding, fearing it would come with some regulatory conditions. Instead they've been focusing on getting billions through "reform" of the USF -- which could net them billions in additional, poorly-tracked funds. While investment cuts have pleased short-sighted investors, they've also resulted in cable operators eating the telcos lunch in these un-upgraded legacy markets. These are the same companies that continually threaten to cut investment if they don't get what they want in DC, while hoping nobody notices that they already did.

Re: Thieves!!!

Pretty cool. So the government will pay for broadband deployment and the carriers won't have to give anything in return? Sounds like a great day to be a carrier...

Not for nothing, Carteret is not even on the list of places Verizon was going to wire with FIOS in the first place let alone on the list and not done yet. You can see for yourself on the BPU's website.

I thought that when NJ gave them the statewide FIOS franchise, they were going to do the majority of the Verizon service area within 10 years.

that franchise agreement probably has more loopholes than than BP's promise to make the Gulf Coast WHOLE again by paying to restore the economy. katrina.. huge loophole... no? they're not fixing that disaster portion of the economy right?

Sorry, but you will have to move to get FIOS. My estimate is 70-80% of New Jersey will be wired. Verizon doesn't have a blank check for FIOS anymore, however as the uptick rates for FIOS Internet & FIOS Digital Voice re-earn trust with the consumer then, FIOS Video can go toe to toe with any Cable-Company Video. First, get the established areas above 25% (market share) and maybe Verizon would be willing to push beyond established commitments.

One if the richest, most profitable companies in the US needs a subsidy? Didnt they have to lay out their $23 billion dollar plan to the FCC before rolling out FIOS a few years ago?

You don't get rich by paying for what somebody else would be willing to give to you for free.

This is one of the problems that the Free Marketers foresee with all this talk of big government.

And yet these same "free marketers" will come here screaming how it is their network, they built it with their money, and nobody has given them anything to help build it.

Could it be

Could the trimmed investment also be due to the numerous markets that VZ has sold off recently?

Re: Could it be

Karl's not interested in that kind of analysis, he already knows why Verizon is trimming their investments, now he just has to find some data to support that conclusion.

Re: Could it be

Maybe it is because they can not suck the profit out of the areas they sold off and use it to install FIOS in the retained areas anymore...or the Executives felt like padding their bonuses again.

If you read the actual freaking article before inanely whining about bias you would have noticed Burstein's line: "Verizon's capital spending is significantly down as a % of sales and per customer, as Alltel has made them a much bigger company while the gross spending has been about flat."

Have you EVER considered looking at a mirror before you moronically accuse others of bias?

Honestly, I've got nothing to say to that. My prior comment was BS and I got called on it.

It's rediculous to think ...

That the biggest players often with little or no competition and making large profits are always first in line to get Government handouts or demand shakedown money from taxpayers.

This happens constantly in all industries nationwide. Huge players get huge $$$. It's total BS. You want to worry about budget deficits? Well then we need to stop this crap right now.

USF..free money

It's all part of the plan for obtaining government subsidies. Why take money out of the bottom line if the government is going to make *billions* of dollars available through "USF reform"?!
