Verizon Unveils Their 'TV Everywhere' Plans
FiOS TV and Internet users get access to TBS, TNT content
by Karl Bode Thursday 13-May-2010 tags: Video · business · alternatives · wireless
Verizon this week unveiled their plans to join the cable industry's "TV Everywhere" initiative -- which involves offering paying TV customers (only) the ability to watch some paywalled content online. The industry believes the idea will help them prevent "cord cutters" -- or those who turn to Internet video as an alternative to those now often bi-annual TV rate hikes. Verizon says their TV Everywhere offering will arrive in June, and will initially include access to all TNT and TBS shows -- assume you subscribe to both FiOS Internet and TV:

FiOS customers who subscribe to both FiOS TV and FiOS Internet will be able to watch the programs on their personal computers or laptops - at home or away - using any broadband connection. Using their Verizon Online user names and passwords, FiOS customers will be able to access the online programming at either www.verizon.com/fiostvonline or soon-to-be launched TNT and TBS websites. After successfully completing their initial login, consumers do not need to sign in again for up to 30 days. Online programming from additional content providers also will be accessible via FiOS TV Online or the provider websites.

Of course Verizon doesn't want to offer this content to just their Internet customers -- lest they cannibalize their own TV revenues. According to the company, access to this content via mobile devices is something that's in the works.

"bi-annual" rate hikes?

more like every 3 months. The rates keep going up and you get no additional channels or features.

The only thing available now is HBO and Epix, both of which require subscriptions.

Look at this:

"(...) soon-to-be launched TNT and TBS websites"

Maybe TBS/TNT is in the process of finally dumping the crappy streaming Windows Media 9 (WMV-DRM) they've used for eons for H.264 video in a Flash wrapper, with some HTML5 thrown in for dedicated TBS/TNT mobile device apps (iPhone/iPad/Android)? Would make sense given that every other Time Warner website uses a H.264-in-Flash-wrapper video mix, and that Time Warner wants everything iPad-ready in some form or another by year end.

Nothing to fix. There's probably some local/STB data/software needed by the DVR. But if you don't believe, try posting here: »Verizon FIOS TV

Whatever.

I'm waiting for apps like Boxee to get on the iPhone/iPad and then I'll have access to all the internet TV (including major networks) I could want without needing a cable company's "portal" (or paying them).
