Verizon Unveils Unified SMS Messaging Platform
In Hopes Of Staying Relevant in Messaging as SMS Dies
by Karl Bode 08:46AM Friday Mar 22 2013
Verizon of course sees the writing on the wall that their SMS cash cow will soon be led to the slaughterhouse by push messaging services like iMessage or Google chat. As such, the company this week announced that their Verizon Messages service, which will allow users to receive messages on tablet, smartphone or PC. Traditionally these attempts to try and jump into content competitions don't fare well because phone companies aren't good at either software or innovation. As this video points out the service is tied to one phone number, though it's still also tied to your SMS plan.

THe monthly cost going to be for this. I forsee that is it is free at first they will eventually start charging. Something has to replace the SMS cash cow.

Look for "Verizon Messages". I found it labeled that in the Google Play store. It was not listed under Verizon Apps.

I tried it and still couldn't find it in the Apple Store. Maybe someone else will have luck.

Apple will not allow an "app" into their store that already replicates a function of the phone. I message already does this among apple devices, thus, they will block and deny the Verizon app because it competes with one of their own products.

And Google is going to integrate all of their messaging service's into one over arcing service called Babble. Not to sure about that name but this will no doubt cause Verizon to once again start bitching about Google using their network, and not paying.

Re: So what is...

Sms will be relevant for a long time for the simple reason that all the os' have their own messanger that doesnt integrate with any other OS. Sms doesnt care if you have android or BB, you still get the message. Theres no doubt that imessage and bb messenger and whatever else have take. Out a huge chunk of sms but it will never die until something equally universal can replace it

Re: So what is...

Its called 'email'.
No reason to pay $$$$ for a short message, when you can get the full message with email effectively for free.

you assume everyone has a smart phone and that emails provide the same experience as IM's.... which they don't on both accounts. Some providers allow you to recieve emails as tests, ie yournumer@text.provider.com, but it's still not the same.

Never heard of "Whatsapp"? It is a cross platform messenger that even supports blackberry! SMS is already irrelevant, its costly to send them, there's no way to tell if the message has actually been read by the recipient. It also sometimes seems to take hours for the recipient to receive them. Messengers on the other hand have none of those cons and even work over wifi when your oor of the cell towers.

Re: So what is...

What's app will talk between imessage, BB messanger, whatever the standard android messenger is? If so, that's the type of cross messenger platform i'm talking about. There's numerous standalone messengers out there, but none that will talk to the messenger of all your friends. Not only that, It's another program that all your friends have to use. People want an integrated messenger, they don't want 5 different programs.

SMS works when data isn't available and on older gen systems. It also sends when it can. Ie, I'm lost in a forest, SMS will send when I get the faintest bit of signal automatically.....

Uh...Google Voice?

For me, the best overall integrated service for web/phone sms is Google Voice. My cell carrier is Sprint, and they have integrated the service at the network level as well. If I want to talk to you my phone rings instantly when you call. If I don't want to talk to you, my voice mail will be full...

Phone companies should have stopped charging for SMS about 10 minutes before they flipped on their networks since it's free for them to provide anyway. Of all the attempts I have seen by phone to "enhance" services it's really just a way to repackage the same services as before, often with less features while charging you more.

And this is bad?

I don't miss it, and I don't miss giving AT&T $20 a month for their SMS plan.

This is what happens when you overcharge for something

Someone else comes out with a way to do it cheaper. The cell phone companies did all they could to milk the SMS cow until it dried up and now, they are trying to keep it alive.

A very simple resolution...

All Verizon should do is increase EVERYBODY'S monthly bill by $20.00.

Problem solved.

I think an even better idea is that they use their lobbying power and convince the government to impose a 10% income/cell tax on all VZ customers. Paying 10% of your annual income sounds reasonable.

Great feature.

We've had this feature for a while up here in Canada on Rogers. It's actually really useful, except for us we can use the stock messaging apps on our phones. The only time you need to download a 3rd party app is if you want to text from a tablet.
