Verizon Upgrading FiOS TV Software Platform
IMG 1.9 getting high marks from our users
by Karl Bode Monday 27-Dec-2010 tags: business · bandwidth · Verizon FiOS
Users in our Verizon FiOS TV forum have been sharing their thoughts on Verizon's latest software upgrade for FiOS TV set tops, which is slowly being deployed to test subjects and in limited markets. The latest version of the Interactive Media Guide (IMG), IMG 1.9, looks better and offers a number of functionality improvements to customer DVRs -- including eSATA support and multiroom DVR browsing -- many that were proposed by customers via the Verizon Verizon Idea Exchange. Users in our forums are largely gushing over the improvements, which is a good sign for Verizon -- who'd love to help continue the trend of customers leaving traditional cable for other alternatives -- most notably telcoTV. Comcast, who lost 275,000 basic cable subscribers last quarter, is busily playing catch up with telcoTV DVR functionality with new set top technology trials.

I could swear this first wasnt there when I read it: "Users in our Verizon FiOS TV forum have been sharing their thoughts on Verizon's latest software upgrade for FiOS TV set tops, which is slowly being deployed to test subjects and in limited markets." Hmm or it could be disorientation from shoveling snow.

I wonder if the old Verizon (new Frontier) FIOS customers will see this update as well.

Will Verizon giveth and taketh away from FiOS!

I wonder if Verizon will giveth some additional features and taketh away some existing features. Comcast as a result of their patent dispute with TiVo fixed their DVR so that if one fast forwards it will jump back several seconds and not stop at the point were the play button was pressed. TiVo claimed that they owned the rights to the feature that allows playback at the point where the play button was pressed. I wonder how many desirable features Verizon will remove and how many junk features they will add to FiOS as a result of the upgrade?

I don't think you have that quite right. Tivo's have always jumped back like that (so why they would hold a patent on the opposite of what they do, I am not sure). It is a feature to make up for the lag in time between seeing the beginning of a show and pressing the play button. Most people like it, but it does take some getting used to. My guess is it is the other way around and Comcast paid to use the auto-jumpback method.

my WOW STB stops going back or forward as soon as i hit "play" so yah.

TiVO can claim that all they want. In actually; that service was well before them with DVD and VHS players.

From what I understand, it's not the jump back feature, per se, that's at issue. It's HOW it jumps back. TiVo, I know, has a patent on determining how far to jump back. It's based off of user response. It learns how much to jump back based on who's currently using the remote, and adjusts. There are other items at issue in these lawsuits by TiVo, but from what I understand, that's the biggie.

Like jaw, I gotta be careful what I post here (that NDA I signed) - so I wont get into any specific details. But from what I can tell, I don't see any features taken away in this release. I agree with jaw - it's not perfect (what is?), but there's much in here that's very cool. Still not convinced about the color palate, though - it takes some getting used to.

Ummm 1.9 isn't all roses

I'm one of the beta testers, and while 1.9 is a huge improvement it isn't without its major faults. I won't get into the specifics as I signed a NDA, I just wanted to correct the perception that 1.9 was perfect.

one step at a time...

now if they could only get the billing straight and teach the phone reps to speak proper English oh and queue the rate increase for the STB.

delete media manager *requirement*

the "on demand" widgets that access the internet such as youtube and radio stations shouldn't need a "PC" link to media manager software.. they should just stream to the set-top without it.. of course if you want your own media to stream, that would need a link... afterall, the set-top is already accessing the fios router which has access to the ip network.
you wanna improve the customer exp. make some of the apps more *customer* friendly.

Also, as a customer.. we've seen (past 6 mos) the EXTREME HD package trim extra music channels and other channels slimming the EXTREME down to size.. so these few givebacks in the set-stop offset the loss of content (well not really, but you get the idea). If they made the changes above that I suggest that would satisfy me.. being able to use youtube & internet radio links w/o PC would be a big help. Pity if cablevision/time warner beats them to this functionality.
