Announces IP backbone completion
(old news - 02:02PM Wednesday Apr 14 2004)
tags: business · telco
Verizon proudly proclaims they've "completed the deployment" of their national MPLS/IP network, which will allow the company to offer a variety of advanced data and voice services, likely heralding the long-expected entry of the phone-giant into the VoIP industry. Over the next 30 days, Verizon will launch several national services such as IP-virtual private network (IP-VPN), the backbone of future VoIP offerings. With the completion of the network, the company claims they've deployed some 9.7 million fiber miles across the country, creating some 200 links in 56 different U.S. markets.

Just like 3G?

Is this just like their nation-wide 3G deployment (that only provides 3G in parts of 2 cities)?

Re: Just like 3G?

I'm suspecting that they define "nation wide" as the part of the country that their executives live in.

Check The Facts Before Posting PR Bits....

The potential enterprise market is $100 billion, not an additional $100 billion in revenues for Verizon....someone needs to re-read the news release a bit more carefully...Here is the quote: "Verizon expects the new network and the services and applications it will support to substantially increase the company's revenues in the $100 billion-plus national market for enterprise services. In terms of current overall revenue, Verizon is the number three carrier supplying complex voice and data services to large public and private-sector enterprises."

You would probally need to subscribe to a "mpls" package, and that would be costly $$$.

Bye by long distance

Maybe we'll stop seeing those commercials offering cheap rates for long distance soon.

so this will be cheaper then there service now?

Okay,
So verizon landline is 49$ unlimited with a few features.
others are like 29-39$. So i take it there VOIP will be the same price with a few features. Will there price be better then Vonage, and Voiceglow ? i am sure its going to be more expensive, and i am sure there better simply because there verizon.

best of luck.

You need a *good* verizon connection before ANY VoIP will work. Best of luck to verizon getting their product to work. Verizon has enough problems to resolbe without adding a MONSTER like VoIP!! Yet another entry to make Vonage look better

I still vote for the use of a string and two tin-cans...

They would probably deny you service citing too long of a loop of string.

Well I prefer that over having someone cut my loop of string because i've been talking too much on it, even though the loop of string is advertised as giving unlimited usage....;)

Hmmm... Good question... And would it make it too easy for the FBI to tie on a tap??

Twine

Perhaps it will be better when we use the old technology... you know... a string and two Tin-Cans

Once again Verizon is putting the cart before the horse. Considering most of their customers can't get any DSL of any kind from them, how do they expect to offer VoIP?

Um, OKay........

How about providing reliable email service first !!!!
Maybe then we can move up to the pool where the big boys play!

The customers can't get much done over 768/128 and now they want to offer VoIP? What are these people smoking?
