story category Verizon Wireless CTO Wants Lower 3G/4G Prices
Hopefully the CFO and marketing department agree with him...
(old news - 03:10PM Thursday May 07 2009)
tags: prices · business · wireless · consumers
In an interview with Unstrung, Verizon Wireless CTO Tony Melone says it's in Verizon's best interests to migrate to LTE wireless broadband as soon as possible. In an interesting bit of candor for a Verizon exec, Melone also proclaims that "pricing is inhibiting the growth of this market." "Quite frankly, this is likely to change even before LTE," he says. How much? Who knows. But it's nice to see Verizon recognize their own high 3G prices.

As for fourth generation LTE technology, Verizon currently plans to launch a few trial LTE markets later this year. After that, the carrier plans to deploy LTE to roughly thirty markets by the end of 2010, and then hit most major markets by the end of 2014. Adoption would obviously be helped by friendlier pricing.

According to the latest data from ComScore, 3G data card use grew at a rate of 163% in 2008. Still, the fourth quarter of last year started to see a significant decline in user growth, something ComScore blames on the struggling economy. Many consumers still see 3G wireless data as a luxury item -- and can't quite justify the $60 (plus fees) for 5GB worth of usage that's the industry standard.

Oddly enough, that's about what I get with Sprint.

My EVDOa is $30/mo and I don't have a cap. I know why it's $30 a month. I'm not certain why it isn't capped, something to do with the larger corporate package, I guess.

My Touch Pro is unlimited data too. My minutes come from the company pool, so in the end my bill is about $60/mo=minutes+data.

this might get better

...l if/when Sprint introduces a mi-fi product. EVDO Rev A card hooks up to four (or five) wi-fi signals. Nice aggregation product...

Hybrid Fios/3g plan

I would love to see some sort of a hybryd Fios (or DSL if you prefer) and 3G/4G plan. I think AT&T is trialing this in Atlanta with their new Netbooks, and I hope that VZ does something similar. I would only need the 3G coverage a few times a month, on a limited basis. I do most of my work at home and the office. But searching out free Wi-Fi stinks, and there is only so much Panera Bread a man can take.

But as to being cost prohibitive to growth, definately. I would not pay $60/mo + $40/mo to have my home connection (man cannot live on 3G alone). However, I might consider paying $60/mo for my home connection and a limited 3G offering (maybe 1GB/mo).

that's a good idea. i don't travel a lot, but when i do i'd like to not pay $5.99/hr to t-mobile just at the airport.

I have a Blackberry on Sprint's 3G, and my new netbook connects via bluetooth anywhere I can get a signal. No extra charges, no 3G cards, very simple and clean. I can then switch over to wifi when I get where I am going.

Re: Hybrid Fios/3g plan

I can do the same with HTC Touch Diamond, but I typically use USB. Cellular South tethering is not supported but easy to do with Windows Mobile. Just go to internet sharing, plug in the USB and surf your hearts content.

As far as I know all Windows Mobile devices support it, as do all Blackberries, regardless of carrier.

I'll have to remember to do that on my Sprint Treo 800w (soon to probably be replaced with AT&T service).

I would hope the $256 per GB overage charge would be a reason too.

Exactly! You have no idea how many times I've been at a Verizon store staring at the AirCards, wanting... lol It's just that $60 (plus Dallas metro area taxes adds like another $35 on top of that) to get ONLY 5 GB... Ouch.

but its such a value... its only 11.98each for the first 5 gigs!!!

then each additional gig is only $51.20!!!

for something that costs with infrastructure and marketing somewhere around $3.00 a gig!!! what a value!!!

(assuming each additional meg is $0.05/meg and assuming 1024 megs in a gig)

price drops across the board

verizon has some of the most expensive pricing in the wireless industry.. worth it or not.. they could stand to bring just about every wireless price they have $$ DOWN $$ a few notches and still be very profitable (that goes to show you just how much markup there is).

across the board

All phone and data providers need a $10 drop in prices. I would sign up for more if there was just that much of a drop. But this needs to be applied to cable, phone, dsl, etc.

I'll keep my plan

This would be great for new users but I'll keep my $59.95 Unlimited plan (5GB then subject to throttling = no overage charges for me) and use that. I've gotten so many contract renew offers from Verizon its ridiculous. Yes Verizon let me void my current contract to save a few bucks on a new device and pay you thousands in overages....

The current cap/fee's are a joke with the pricing. I would have never purchased one with the new terms. I also assume a lot of there growth in 08 came from users that can only get Satellite or Dial up. 5GB kills the idea of a home solution for any type of medium to heavy users.

You can renew your plan and even get a new rev A usb card and keep your plan the same. If anyone tells you otherwise, they are lying.

Re: I'll keep my plan

Correct. I went in a couple weeks ago to replace my flaky USB720 with a new USB727 and the Verizon sales dude said "man you're lucky, you're on the old unlimited plan". He said I am grandfathered in and am not subject to the new 5GB caps. I've had a VZW aircard account for several years now.

Once again, no contract, no caps, uses Verizon towers for new customers, still $60/mo.

caps removal? NEVER!

I am pretty sure the 5GB limit will still apply to LTE. No existing cellular network has enough HZ to give wired style bandwidth to handsets.

Remember EVDO is 2mbps to 6 mbps per tower per direction/sector, and that all split among all EVDO users on the tower. 3G was a gimick for bursting web surfing only, un-centrally organized video usage and any kinds of file downloads (more than 5 secs of flooring the connection at time) will bring the whole tower down.

This is the same problem DOCSIS cable operators have, but instead of 38mbps, its 2 mbps thats being shared.

There is a slight hope the bandwidth cap will increase to 10 GB, LTE is more spectrally efficient »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectral_efficiency 1.1 for EVDO vs maximum 16 for LTE (apples to oranges comparison).

Re: caps removal? NEVER!

This time last year, I always had at least one Verizon EVDOa card with me. I had an EVDO router in the van that I left on 24/7 and I'd stream internet radio from my notebook and play it over the van's stereo. 2 days a month I'd stream a sling box, so the remote guys could watch NASCAR.

I went over 5GB every month, some months were a lot more. Verizon never said a word. I figure because it was a corp account with about 40-50 devices on it.

They didn't want to jeopardize that cash stream. If users would band together by carrier in groups of 50-100, I'd imagine they'd have more say so with their carrier.

pricing

I wont buy a card or plan until the pricing becomes more reasonable. Moreover, the cap is another reason prohibiting adoption. Furthermore, I'm never anywhere where I don't have internet access.

yo

I have blackberry with verizon and use tetherberry....Fast speeds for a tether and you pay 30 bucks or something one time fee. I go over 5gb all the time, and verizon hasn't said shit about it. Almost thinking about canceling my internet at home. I can live with 100-200k download speeds until fios gets to my area.

Re: verizon

And, from most of the other people i know on verizon, they have never been limited to the 5gb cap. Don't know why, but apparently verizon is slacking on the enforcement around here.
