Verizon Won't Follow AT&T's Lead on Facetime
Users Can Use Any Verizon Plan With iPhone 5 Feature
by Karl Bode Thursday 13-Sep-2012 tags: prices · Video · business · wireless · telco · bundles · AT&T · Verizon · wireless · AT&T
It was recently revealed that AT&T is planning to force users to sign up for one of their shared data plans if they wanted to use Facetime on the iPhone, a feature that was previously restricted to Wi-Fi only presumably to protect carrier networks from harm. The move hasn't seen a warm response from consumer advocates, Free Press in particular running a campaign claiming that AT&T was violating net neutrality by not offering the feature to everyone equally. In a bit of good news, Verizon says they won't place any restrictions on who can use the service. While both carriers are aggressive in using their competitive advantage to raise rates, AT&T has long been more "creative" in trying to take unpopular ideas the extra mile. Both companies have waged a quiet war on their grandfathered unlimited users, however -- and Verizon is requiring that users who upgrade to new LTE handsets (like the iPhone 5) either switch to their new shared data plan, or pay the full unsubsidized price for the device.

That would certainly be cheaper than switching to a shared data plan for two years. Depending on the data usage it's probably cheaper after less than a year.

Well if it's like the Galaxy S III then it would be $600 full price or a $400 difference. Also technically it's 20 months not 2 years since you can upgrade every 20 months. So $20 a month.

I guess if you don't bother to use Wi-Fi I suppose one would use a lot of data. Of course maybe that's the reason why they got rid of unlimited also. Hmmmmm.

$600 ? my good man the last Iphone started off higher than that with the entry level model @ $650, and with the top of the line memory models in the $800 bracket. I wouldn't hold my breath and expect apple to release any of the I5 models for anything less than A starting gate price of $700 (off contract) for the entry level model, now that there claiming this I5 is leaps and bounds over the 4/4S.

It amuses me to no end how Apple buyers will accept a $100-$200 price increase for the privilege of having more storage space, while neglecting to consider the fact that every single Android phone on the market can be upgraded at any time for the cost of an SD card.

Just go to a third party retailer that not a corporate office reseller, when you go to use your upgrade and they tell you that "you'll have to lose unlimited data" tell them nevermind you want your phone back, they usually want to make the commission so bad they'll find a way around the loss of your unlimited to get you a new phone, I did that here at a kiosk in the mall and got my S3 for the price of the upgrade

Good for YOU. They fact is you got lucky and the retialer did something against Verizon TOS so I suspect they are not doing it anymore or they will no longer be abe to resell Verizon services. You are ONE person and that doesn't mean anyone can do it and considering the numnber of people forced to either switch or pay full prices outnumber you by umpteenfold I'll take those facts over yours.

I suggest you quit telling peole they can do something they most certianly CAN NOT do.

Also please let me know this generous retailer and location. Anyone can say anything back your shit up.

The fact is there was a glitch in the system that allowed some ordering the SIII to keep unlimited. That glitch has now been fixed. But just in case I will report that retailer to Verizon.

Haha, wow, it's people like you that screw everything up, what a douchebag.

Matt

Edit: So let me see if I get this straight...

Upon signing up on contract with VZW 6 years ago, I decided to purchase a family plan of 3 devices, 2 dumb phones, 1 smart phone. At the time I could of had the single smart phone for about $80 a month and unlimited data. Instead I pay $230 a month so I have the ability to buy a new phone every 6 months subsidized. The 2 extra phones haven't been activated/turned on since the day I bought them, and so I'm actually paying VZW $150 extra a month for this ability.

$150 x 6 = $900

So by your logic I should be paying full price every 6 months for a new phone even though I already pay them an extra $900 a month for 2 phones that aren't being used at all, that just sit in a desk and rot away. Now does this really make any sense? Considering the extra I pay them could buy me a new phone every 6 months? No I think I'll stick to my loopholes since I already pay them well enough that they should be providing me a new phone for free every 6 months.

Them's the breaks. If you want to keep your grandfathered plan, prepare to pay full price. If you want a subsidy, you need to get a new plan.

File a complaint about AT&T with the FCC

What a load of crap from AT&T... But this is typical from a company that wants to charge you for a network that you can't actually use.

So Unlimited not only means "throttled", it also means "inaccessible".

File an FCC Complaint about AT&T's FaceTime practice here:

I'm confused...

Look, I don't like how Verizon or AT&T handle things, but this is crazy.

AT&T is allowing you to keep your unlimited plan with the caveat that you can't use Facetime.

Verizon says you can use Facetime, but they have already said you CAN'T have unlimited data with the iPhone5.

So.. AT&T gives you a choice.. albeit, a bad one. With Verizon, you have zero choice. You have shared data and Facetime.

In my case, I have unlimited data with my iPhone on AT&T. I have no interest in using Facetime over LTE, so I plan to stick with the unlimited data versus if I was on Verizon, where I would have no choice and would have to switch plans.

I personally prefer how AT&T handled this and is at least allowing me to choose.

Side question..Do people really use Facetime that much? Am I that behind the times?

It isn't much of a choice. AT&T's shared data plan is for many customers nothing but a price increase in order to use the all the features on the phone for which they paid. The news is worse if you happen to be on an affinity plan because the discounts have been diluted only to apply to the data portion.

Yes, and the cost of a full price phone over 2 years versus the subsidy? Do the math.

And I agree that it is a choice between bad or worse, just a matter of personal preference more than anything.

Let Me See If I Understand This

People are complaining that "AT&T" and VZW won't give them what they want for the price they want to pay so... they buy what they can, or can justify, then want the government to force the carriers to give them the rest?

This is just like the cable TV nonsense all over again. People want the "wonderfullness" of subscription TV, but don't want to pay what the sellers want to charge. So they demand the government "do something."

Geee... I can't find the device and coverage I would like for the prices I want to pay. Should I petition the government to make the providers give me what I want, for what I want to pay?

This is nonsense. If you don't like what your provider is doing, stop giving them your business. For the vast majority of smartphone users, smartphones and data plans are little more than amusements, anyway. C'mon: Facetime? Seriously? Give me a break.

Jailbreaking your iPhone has never been easier. My guess is that iOS 6 will be liberated quickly, and using the 3G unrestricted will solve this problem.

There is no bootrom jailbreak for A5 chip and greater (i.e. iPhone 4S/5, iPad 2/3), like there is for the A4 chip (iPhone 4) and earlier. So while a tethered jailbreak is already available for iOS 6 for iPhone 4/iPad and older models, nothing exists for newer models.

Also an untethered jailbreak doesn't exist for any model as of yet and one might not exist for quite a while.

The iOS 6 GM was just released yesterday and I'm guessing they are hard at work at it. The problem is they need to find a bug in the iOS 6 that allows escaping the user land. I don't doubt iOS 6 will be jailbroken eventually, but it could take awhile.

True. Sort of like the days of iOS3. They found a nifty PDF exploit that would root the device from the browser, and once Apple patched it many developers had to find another exploit to use. Some of them certainly took ages to come out.
