story category Verizon Wouldn't Let Doctor Use His Real Name
Because it contained the word 'shit' in it...
(old news - 09:00AM Thursday Jul 31 2008)
tags: dsl · business · Verizon Online DSL
Tipped by CtrlAltDel See Profile
When Philadelphia-area doctor and Vietnam veteran Dr. Herman I. Libshitz went to upgrade his dial-up connection to Verizon DSL, he was informed by the company that they couldn't complete the order because his last name contained an expletive. Repeated calls to several levels of management at Verizon failed to resolve the problem, with several managers suggesting he misspell his last name. Only once the Philadelphia Inquirer contacted Verizon on his behalf, did Libshitz get a response that vaguely resembled customer service:
"As a general rule (since 2005) Verizon doesn't allow questionable language in e-mail addresses, but we can, and do, make exceptions based on reasonable requests. The one from Dr. and Mrs. Libshitz certainly is reasonable and we regret the inconvenience and frustration they've been caused."
It only took him three supervisors, several calls to both support and billing, and the help of a major city paper to get Verizon to make the exception to his "reasonable request". Think maybe customer service isn't quite up to snuff?

If Verizon's CSR department gets hung up on something like this, then they're in deep shi...err, stuff.

In a related story, I had a friend back in elementary school with the last name of Slutz. Yes, was always pronouced like you think it is. In the early 90s, they tried to change the pronouciation to "sluetz", with marginal success.

I still caller her a Slutz.

Ya, my last name is Raper, pronounced just the way its spelled. Many people in an attempt to be polite will pronounce it "wrapper". I just avoid using my last name. When I call clients I'm "Rob, the computer guy", LOL.

Your consultant really needs to change his name. That or make certain he doesn't reproduce, and send more kids through school with that name.

No offense but it's the typical practical (should I say primitive?) American answer to a problem that shouldn't even exist in first place if schools weren't full of unruly, spoiled kids, coming from "families" where parental duties are apparently limited to provide the Holy Trinity of shelter and food and entertainment.

FYI most countries have existed well before the US, along with their genealogical history and the whole idea to change your family* name sounds completely ridiculous for me - why would anyone throw away her/his family name after 500-1000 years (in perspective: 3-4x longer than the whole history of US ), long generations of ancestry?
Only to avoid insults thrown out by some stupid boorish, ill-bred loser kids?
What a nonsense.

*: FAMILY name, not last name - to me "last name" shows the lack of respect toward history including your own ancestry.

I agree. Not just 1,000 years but many more than that. Some translations and even just the names themselves can come out as expletives or other wise even insulting to US custom. However, no one should ever have to change there name, period. I would be outraged if someone asked me to do so and there would be no end to the battle/lawsuits and what have you.

The US should not ask, or especially force, anyone one to change anything just to "fit in" to our society.

Yes, Spanish speaking but not knowing English is a problem, I think they should learn English, just like we should if we were to live in France, learn French.

But changing something that is so important to many as their name is completely out of the question and this should have never happened. I cannot imagine that this is uncommon, it is very common. I hear all sorts of last names that are what they are.

Here are a few...
Neicewonger
Fingered
Horney
Assman

I could go on and I did not even really get into the different ethnic names.

Verizon is not alone in bad customer service though, this story just happened to pick on them. Every big company has it's problems.

Unfortunately the illiterate INS bureaucrats at Ellis Island had a habit of doing this between January 1, 1892 and November 12, 1954 (when the immigration depot was closed) by deliberately misspelling any name they found too hard to spell or pronounce.

When I was a kid we didn't have the internet to look up dirty words. We had to go down to the library and look them up BY HAND (and usually got nothing worse than "fart").

Kids today have it easy, but they also get a bit stupid with it. Back in my day there was always some winner in the neighborhood who'd offer to eat worms for fifty cents. A few weeks ago I had a five year-old up the block offer to felch a squirrel for a buck.

No, he didn't know what it meant. And unfortunately I was strapped for cash.

Last name or email address?

quote:

quote:

It sounds like the information cited clearly says the issue was with putting his last name in the email address and not with his last name being used in a last name field. So he still was able to use his last name to order service, just not as an email address. Frustrating yes, but if Verizon doesn't allow the creation of the address are they going to filter out his mail? It would seem a risk to use an email any random filter Verizon has could block.

What's in a name?

I wonder if they'd have a problem with a name like Hymen? There are lots of Libshitz and Lipshitz in the phonebooks so I don't see the problem. I mean if his name were Tittyberg or Jackoffenstein then I'd be suspicious.

Oops.

I remember seeing issues like this with automated filters back on a hockey message board I used to frequent. The profanity filter always had a fit when Detroit fans started talking about Kris Draper.

As to this, if he wants that as his email, let him have it. If he wants to deal with spam filters rejecting it, that's his problem, not Verizon's. I just wonder if it was rejected by humans, based on policy, or if their system was programmed to automatically reject it and they couldn't override it (which would be a major design flaw, in my opinion). Either way, not good press for them.

I feel his pain

I had that problem with Microsoft-based registrations. My last name is Raper, and it blocked my registration because it's an offensive word. I had a friend who worked for Microsoft at the time, who forwarded my problem along internally (much to their amusement I'm sure).

Fortunately one thing Microsoft has been good at is tying everything back to your MSN/hotmail account, so I've never needed to perform a new user registration since then.
