Google and Verizon have often been on opposing sides of deals and issues (like those issues that arose during the 700 Mhz spectrum earlier this year). However it looks like the two companies are about to put the past behind them as they are rumored to be nearing a deal which would make Google the default search engine on all Verizon phones. The two companies would split ad revenue so that both would benefit. The deal has not been commented on by either party but sources say that a major point of contention is that Google seeks to save user search information in order to improve targeted ads and Verizon wants to keep that data to itself. Google is already the default search engine for Sprint phones and has a search partnership with Nokia plus the first Android phone has just gotten FCC approval so this is another step for Google towards dominating the growing mobile environment.

I wonder...

if the good samaritan Google would give the user an opt out clause with regards to saving their information.

I think it would be quite the coup for tracfone to offer dogpile!

Re: I wonder...

Who was the default page to begin with, Yahoo? If so, POOR YAHOO can't catch a break. I hope it wasn't, as really, Yahoo can't be taking any more flack than it is now.

Re: I wonder...

I think the default is some really crappy search engine made by Verizon. For example, if I type in CELL PHONE (or something similar), I would only get like 4 web page results and 435 image results.

Well this is convenient...

For anyone who uses their cell phone with internet to Google. I'm sure they'll start getting the results they're used to as well.

Sprint phone

My Sprint Touch came with MS Live search default. Doesn't really matter to me which 1200 pound gorilla I search with.

gotten?

shouldnt that word be replaced with received?

Never seen a news article anywhere that has used that word.

Big 3

I use an HTC Mogul on Sprint.
Live Search comes built in. I use the Live maps thingy.
I downloaded GoogleMaps and use it sometimes as well. With MobiPush my GMail gets sync'd via Direct Push.
I use Yahoo Go 3.0 as well. Nice app they have there.
I downloaded the new AIM a few days ago but it's very lame so I just use Slick for multiplatform IM when I feel like it.

I use Google for web searches.

For just web searches, Google is the 1200 pound gorilla that gives the most accurate results for me, but for other stuff there really are some innovative products out there; one of my friends' phone (Samsung m520) has Windows Live Search on it, which uses the phone's GPS to tell where to make a search of stuff. Pretty nifty...

Default seach engine? Is this for 2-year olds?

Ok, this is 2008, and we've only matured to the point where an entire mobile carrier has to have a default search engine? What does this even mean? Can't one simply browse to yahoo.com or some other such search engine?

Re: Default seach engine? Is this for 2-year olds?

Google does these deals even with web browser programmers- that's why Mozilla Firefox comes with Google as the default search engine. I guess this kind of deal falls into a similar category- you can use yahoo.com, but Google is hoping that you'll just fall into the path of least resistance
