Verizon names communities for cable service
(old news - 03:59PM Thursday Jan 20 2005)
Verizon Communications Inc. unveiled a list yesterday of 25 Westchester and Rockland communities where it plans to offer cable television service over a new fiber-optic network.

The move is a frontal challenge to Cablevision Systems Inc., the dominant cable provider in the New York area. Cablevision already siphons customers from Verizon and other phone providers by offering its own phone service, Optimum Voice.

The communities in Westchester are: Ardsley, Bronxville, Dobbs Ferry, Eastchester, Elmsford, Greenburgh, Harrison and Hastings. Also Irvington, Larchmont, Mamaroneck (the town and village), Port Chester, Rye, Rye Brook, Scarsdale, Tarrytown, Tuckahoe and White Plains.

In Rockland, the company plans to build in: Clarkstown, Grand View-on-Hudson, Orangetown, Piermont, Nyack, South Nyack and Upper Nyack.

End of an era.

Shouldn't it be called Fiber TV? Calling this "Cable TV" is kinda false. I consider Cable TV to be supplied by the local cable TV company. Verizon is a telephone company. But I guess these are old stereotypes. The old Cable TV companies and Telephone companies are now telecommunication companies. After all, I can purchase Digital TV, Digital Telephone and Broadband Internet from both.

Still I'd like to see a new name for this type of TV service, not just "cable" because it is similar to cable TV.

This is the final blow to Cable TV in my opinion. There is no such thing as a TV company, any provider who has a line to your house can provide multiple services over that one line now.

So much for it coming soon to me

"It is unclear whether the company will eventually offer the service in the remaining communities in the two counties."

"We will continue to build the fiber network in both counties, but we're concentrating right now on these initial areas,"

When my rotten phone lines go down every month I hear don't worry FIOS is coming soon. Yeah right.
