Verizon Communications Inc. unveiled a list yesterday of 25 Westchester and Rockland communities where it plans to offer cable television service over a new fiber-optic network.
The move is a frontal challenge to Cablevision Systems Inc., the dominant cable provider in the New York area. Cablevision already siphons customers from Verizon and other phone providers by offering its own phone service, Optimum Voice.
The communities in Westchester are: Ardsley, Bronxville, Dobbs Ferry, Eastchester, Elmsford, Greenburgh, Harrison and Hastings. Also Irvington, Larchmont, Mamaroneck (the town and village), Port Chester, Rye, Rye Brook, Scarsdale, Tarrytown, Tuckahoe and White Plains.
In Rockland, the company plans to build in: Clarkstown, Grand View-on-Hudson, Orangetown, Piermont, Nyack, South Nyack and Upper Nyack.
