Previously only for new users, customers say things have changed...

Back in August, Verizon began offering DSL customers a fixed DSL price "for life" if customers signed a two-year contract. However, only new 768kbps ($14.99) and 3Mbps ($27.99) customers were able to take advantage of the deal. According to a post to our forums, some existing customers have been able to negotiate the same deal:
Due to many complaints (from existing DSL customers) about Verizon offering DSL service at $14.99 for life for "new customers only", Verizon has decided to offer this same price to existing DSL customers. Their decision to do this happened just last week and it is not publicised anywhere on their website.

The way I found out was when I went to cancel my DSL service, the Verizon rep offered me the above deal to stay with Verizon. Last month, I tried every way to get that deal and it just couldn't be had because I was an existing customer.
It's consistently rewarding for users to threaten to cancel in order to get the best deal, though it's increasingly difficult to do so without getting locked into a long-term contract.

A Long Term contract doesn't bother Me

A Long Term contract doesn't bother Me, Why should It? I mean I'd hope the $27.95 is lower than what I'm currently paying Verizon for the 3M DSL that I get(Which I wish was faster, Good Luck).

Two years?

If I don't have FIOS is two years I don't think I can go on.

I never thought I would say this, but...

...I'm glad I'm in At&T territory. They got rid of contracts awhile ago and charge 24.95/mo for 3mb service.

For those who can't get Verizon to budge...

...and have no other option (ie, Cable sucks or is not avail in your area), one possible solution would be to cancel your service altogether, and a day after service ends, sign up again.

You will be without internet for a few days, but you will be a new customer. I remember people reporting that this worked with SBC/At&T back when they did this type of thing.

If they refuse, have your spouse put it under his/her name. They can't refuse then.

Ponzi Anyone

Next up, signing on the dotted line for the same fun & games you get when you agree to a cellular contract. The provider lures you in with lowered monthly rates at the same time you see decreasingly lowered k/bps due to overselling. Voila. Business as usual. This is SOP for the providers. The provider gets to oversell the service just like cable broadband service and just like cellular service. Price fixing for life isn't a deal, it's an MLM scam disguised as Internet service.

Re: Ponzi Anyone

I've never looked at canceling a cell contract for poor serivce, but it's not a big deal with Verizon's DSL. If you have a history of bad performance from them, there usually isn't any hassle about waiving the ETF.

Price for life

"Price for Life" should be renamed "Price for the foreseeable future" as the TOS states they can terminate the plan at any time. My guess is once FIOS is available in your area your price for life will disappear.

It's for the life of the service, not the life of you.

you can almost...

always use cancellation of your service to negotiate a new pricing structure or add features for what you are paying now... customer retention is key for these companies...

Who Would Want "For Life" Pricing?

Not me.

Right now, 3.0Mbps down is sufficient for most people, almost all the time. But, is it always going to be like that?

Everyone knows that software and data tends to get more bloated as time goes on, not less.

I would also hope that the price doesn't rise dramatically along with bandwidth requirements, although due to inflation I would expect prices to rise slightly from time to time.

I would strongly suspect that 3.0Mbps down at $28/mo. will be a RIP-OFF in ten years, even if the "for-life" pricing is supposed to ensure just that.

Re: Who Would Want "For Life" Pricing?

I think that's the bet Verizon is making; they'll have something better long before that and they can upsell more expensive services.

It's always more expensive to get new customers than it is to keep the ones you have. This looks like an attempt to keep people around for a few years without hearing too much from them. There's a two year contract, so I have to believe they figure within three years they'll have more compelling offerings rolling about about that time.

Might just be increased DSL speeds, might be fiber.

One thing is certain, consumers always like these "lifetime" offers even though the realistic lifetime is just a few years.

Surely the typical consumer understands that anything computer related (except computer monitors) isn't going to be "good enough" in just a few years.

Everything else that was "good enough" in the past is "good enough" now, or so it seems to me. When I say "past," I mean within the last 30 years or so, so it covers mobile phones and microwave ovens.

"For Life"

Doesn't the prison system use terminology similar to this? Seems ironic that you sign up for internet access and are now called 'A Lifer" as in 'A Prisoner".

What's it matter?

It's like having dial-up prices for life... DSL isn't going to last much longer in today's internet world. I can't imagine anybody in two years still wanting 768k downloads.

Awesome...

But no need here, I pay $24.99 for 3M/768K.

Re: Awesome...

Holy Hannah, I just spent 20 mins on the phone, transfer after transfer, being told cannot be done/will not be done. So at the end of the call and the 500th transfer I told them, "customer service sux, and to cancel my dsl service". Then and only then did they agree to change my already 2 year contract to the $14.99 for life with no early termination fee. Seemed like a hassle just to save $5.00 but its $5.00 every month. So I give it a day or two since I have not been billed yet for the past 2 months due to them overcharging 2 months ago to see if A. I am getting the 14.99 for life and B. no $99.00 early termination fee.

Re: Awesome...

I had dialup but within the past two years switched to dsl, which they raised the price to 21.99/mth, and what do they do....say that everyone can get $14.99/mth for life EXCEPT me and people like me (who already have dsl). So although I was in a contract so I could save a buck or two, I called and bitched, they said there was nothing they could do and I told them when my contract expires I'm cancelling.....they worriedly switched me to the cancellation dept. and I told them the same thing...and they instantly switched me to the $14.99/mth for life price, I didn't even have to wait for the contract to end. As above, now I just have to make sure it is that price and no early term fee (which they said there wouldn't be).

dsl isn't going to last???

I had dialup since they had 14k modems, and they still charge $10 to $20 a month for it and it's still only 56k. Maybe 10 years it'll fade, and if it does, 14.99 dsl will still be a good deal. (it's not the fastest, but it's still a good deal).
