Verizon's New Super DVR Hits CA, RI, and MA
Verizon recently unveiled their new "Quantum TV" ultra-DVR in select markets, including North Texas, Harrisburg, portions of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The new IPTV DVR hub offers 6-tuners and 1 terabyte or storage for $22/month over the price of your HD service. Users can utilize two VMS boxes to obtain 12 tuners and 2TB of internal storage for $32/month on top of existing HD service. After launching the new DVR in Maryland, Virginia and DC last week, Verizon today noted they're launching Quantum TV in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and portions of California.

Might leave tivo for this !

Guess my lifetime boxes are going to ebay or for sale forum at this point.

To bad they don't have 3 TB drives in them.

If you sold them on ebay or a sales forum you would be screwing over who ever bought them. They would call verizon and have to activate them and pay a monthly fee for them. The free life time for the box does not follow the box.

He's talking about selling his Tivo, not a Verizon STB.

If you paid for lifetime subscription on a piece of Tivo hardware, it certainly DOES follow the box.

Why would you leave Tivo for this? Its $22/month over the price of your HD service... way more expensive than Tivo.

There is a thread showing it takes around 28-30 months to break even comparing a roamio with 3 mini's (including lifetime subscriptions and monthly cablecard fee) to a VMS and 3 IP boxes.

Re: Might leave tivo for this !

If you read carefully the break even point is cash flow only, not imputed value.

So some people who have no idea look at cash flow only, totally mistaking the residual value of the equipment. In the case of VMS, there is zero residual value and the price WILL go up. If you take the Tivo, after 28 months of break even cash flow, that becomes zero in addition to a residual value of at least 50% so in actuality your break even points is closer to 12-14 months. In the VMS model you just keep paying, and believe me in 3 years the monthly fee is going to go up every year, so it's even more expensive.

In Canada you can buy or "lease" from most of the operators. Guess what, practically nobody leases because they know they are getting rooked, and can resell their hardware if they want newer or to switch vendors.

Most people have no idea buy Tivo w/ monthly and then go to sell and the equipment is worthless. The real value is lifetime subscription. Back in the day I would sell my old Tivo and buy the latest version spending less than $150 after 3 years.. For me I use WMC, which is even cheaper than Tivo. For my 6 TV's I average $5 a month and that was for the first 3 years. Now it's zero and I can resell all of my Xboxes for about 70% of what I paid for them (I bought refurbs).

The sad thing is these IP (DTCP-IP) boxes cost Verizon much less than the outgoing boxes and they are charging MORE. No cablecards, much simpler electronics. If they pay $50 for a client I would be surprised. They are laughing all the way to the bank...

I sure do and would never spend that money on a TIVO or VMS. I would go with a $500 Win Media Center PC and the HD Homerun Prime.

Well 2 reasons 3 x tivos cable cards are $6 each a month. And with this guy I replace the 3 tivos. And get on demand for $4 more a month.... not a bad trade off.

Who uses 3 Tivos anymore? That is what the Tivo mini is for... no cablecards for them. They piggyback off the 6 tuners in the Roamio (plus or pro, 4 tuners in basic).

Edit: I got nothing for you for the On Demand... only Comcast has that working with Tivo. Consolation prize.. Roamio has built-in Netflix app?

I still use my old tivos. All 3 of them they have been solid and only 1 had a failing drive that was easily replaced. I don't want to go buy a bunch of little tivos Im good with my current ones. Or I replace it with a cable co box at this point.

Cool. I had the same experience. My DirecTv Tivos from 10+ years ago were still going strong, but then I moved to cable (shudder) just as the new Roamio was coming out. When I found out about the Mini, I jumped in with both feet.
Don't regret it for a second. Only downside is I can't ever go to Uverse in the future.

IPTV?

This are still standard cable boxes yes? My question being that this isn't part of some IPTV transition? I hope not. I love that fact that verizon has separate light for voice, data and TV.

No, the IP boxes are IP only and not QAM256.

The VMS boxes still receive their signals over QAM like standard cable boxes. The "IP" is for the extenders placed in the other rooms, which are strictly IP streaming boxes (no tuners). By default they stream from the VMS, not from Verizon's data pipe.

BUT, in the event that the VMS isn't working for some reason, the extenders will go into OTT mode as a backup and download channel streams just like the Fios app does.

New Quantum DVR service

Here are the dirty details of the new service..if you already have FIOS DVR service its an extra 10 or 20 dollars a month depending on which level of new DVR service you choose.

Also there is a one time equipment exchange fee of 24.95.

They get you coming and going.

Costs 22 OVER your HD DVR subscription which is already 20

Total cost is $42/mo. Discounts offered sometimes lower the pain without you realizing it, but the Total cost is getting the Multi room DVR subscription for 20, then the "Quantum" (which truly makes it sound like the royal shafting it is) for another 22 on top of that.
I told them "pass". Give it to me for $5 and maybe I'll be back.

Re: Costs 22 OVER your HD DVR subscription which is already 20

I have a split system with TIVO's and FIOS DVR. On the FIOS side I have a DVR and another TV with a free digital converter. The net increase to go with Quantum is $25 more monthly.

The decision to say no was an easy one. I will keep the split system as is.

It's not that bad. My package is $35 equipment rental for 4 HD devices (one is the DVR) plus the $22 "Enhanced Quantum TV Service" for a total of $57. Before I had the Multiroom DVR ($19) and 3 HD STBs at $9 each for a total of $46 give or take a dollar, so it's about $10-$11 more per month. I like that the new DVR is much smaller and quieter and the IP devices are much, much smaller and easier to fit into the decor.
