Verizon's Phone Trade in Service Hits 11 States
Up to $300 in Store Credit for Old Devices
by Karl Bode Friday 13-Jan-2012 tags: prices · business · wireless · hardware · wireless
Late last year Verizon started implementing a new phone trade in program that allowed users to trade in their old phones (from any carrier) for store gift cards. While an easy way to quickly get store credit, Verizon's estimates for device value were below what users could get through other online websites. While anybody could use this Verizon website to trade in your device, users couldn't get old phone store credit -- until now. In what appears to be a trial program to gauge profitability, Verizon's now offering credit up to $300 for phones in certain markets. The program is expected to last through the end of the year, and extends to residents of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

People in red states would trade in their grandmother if it made them a buck!

Typical bashing by a Blue! Don't actually know how to even think of something constructive to say.

It's a marketing campaign in VZ's late entry states where they lag the competition.

Device Value

It looks like there is no difference between selling a used device to Verizon and selling a used car to a dealer. Neither one will give you what you could make selling it on your own. Of course it will be the convenience of letting Verizon handle all the details that will make it compelling. I seriously doubt anyone in their right mind would sell Verizon a used iPhone unless they want to take a bath.

Re: Device Value

Verizon says my Droid X is worth less than half the "deductible" I would have to pay to have it replaced under their own insurance plan.

Re: Device Value

My Droid Charge is only worth $56 to them. I wonder what I can get for it anywhere else.

Heck, even Gazelle only gives $72 for it.

If you like pawn shop rates

you'd do better selling your unwanted handset on ebay.

Doesn't ebay take away something between 5-10% of your sale? That's a huge amount. It seems better to sell it on craigslist.

Don't trust the website's quote as what you'll get.

I tried trading in my old 3gs a few days before Christmas, as the site stated it was worth $110. in reality it was worth $45 and yes it's in excellent condition, I still even have the original box. I wouldn't go into the store expecting to get what the site quotes.

Re: great deal !!!

I found it hard to complain getting two new Droid Razors for .1cent on Black Friday and traded in two Samsung Eternity's -Non smart phones that covered two additional car charges, protective bang proof cover and a blue tooth ear plug. *Shrug*
