Verizon's VoLTE Arrives...For Only Two Phone Models

Back in May Verizon proclaimed that when they did finally launch voice over LTE (VoLTE), the higher-quality voice service would arrive on a "robust" assortment of handsets. This week Verizon announced that VoLTE, or what they're calling Advanced Calling 1.0 has launched, though for now it's only available on two phones. Additional phone support is coming via over the air updates, but Verizon has yet to offer a specific list of what devices those will be. The Advanced Calling 1.0 FAQ can be found here, and notes the feature will initially be postpaid customers only.

Re: mission accomplished

You can already do VoIP over LTE on any carrier on most any Android phone using free voice calls on Google Hangouts. Sounds very good, but I haven't tried while moving - handoffs between sites.

I can confirm that Skype Out works great on Verizon LTE while moving. While VoLTE is more than that, normal VoIP programs work well, so I think their network is ready for VoLTE.

Re: mission accomplished

I've been using Skype for a few years on HPSA and LTE without issues - handoffs work well.

It becomes my nice way of calling international where wireless carriers want to gouge.

existenz, I tried Google Voice/Hangouts today on my Nexus 5 and the call setup time was consistently pretty bad when receiving a call. And sometimes it didn't have two way audio, on Wifi and T-mobile LTE. Make a call was better. Have you seen these issues?

I've seen you post multiple times about this but I don't feel its ready for prime time. I get better results with VOIP.ms and the stock Android dialer.

Re: mission accomplished

I've been doing it on Sprint LTE/Galaxy S5 and it consistently works well and also on WiFi. It also works well on Nexus 7 2013 tablet but is choppy on a Nexus 7 2012 tablet. I've called on work phone conferences with it and no one knew. A older friend hard of hearing is now doing it on a cheap but modern $100 tablet and it works well for him, speakerphone is louder on tablet than his GS3 phone and home phone so he uses tablet when he can.

I've only been doing it from home (Google Fiber WiFi and Sprint LTE), not while in other areas so mileage may vary.

You be suprised on how well the handoffs have improved in the past year with Verizon's LTE. I can go for miles now with Iheart radio without getting buffered anymore. I say the network is ready for VoLTE.

Just going by T-Mobile's own website. I'm sure the new iPhone 6es do it too. Not up to me to add stuff that the official websites doesn't say.

I have no skin in this disagreement but reading your original post, I don't interpret any indication that this information is from the T-Mobile site. It reads like hearsay.

Also you realize this is just starting? Do you have to be Debbie Downer? Nearly EVERY phone released in the last 12 months will get this update to enable VoLTE. And every phone that comes out form now on will have it.

I'm not going to fault them just yet

I don't have a problem with them only launching on a handful of devices. It'd be foolish to launch something like this on tons of devices at once. Start slow so you can see how things scale up.

And, admittedly, the devices it's initially launching on are some of the most popular models they sell. The G3 isn't there yet, but there may be a delay in working with LG on their devices. Since the G2 has it, it's a no-brainer that the G3 is going to get it.

The G2 has it because they've been testing it on VOLTE since it came out last fall. The G3 hasn't been out that long.

What is VoLTE?

Is this basically a form of VoIP?

Re: What is VoLTE?

This is voice over their LTE network. Eventually they will be able to shut down their CDMA and 1X network and refarm that spectrum for LTE.

Amen to that. And maybe when all the phones sound great, people will realise how terrible craptooth sounds and we can replace it with something better.

Bluetooth can sound decent if the headsets would use a better codec/birate. Considering it can already carry decent sounding Stereo audio and voice at the same time...

Has anyone tried it....

with the iPhone 6? I tried it last night after setting everything up and the volume was very low. To the point it was almost unusable. I have switched back for now.

Disabling VoLTE on iPhone 6 due to Network Extender compatibility issues

As you know, Verizon's Network Extender does not support VoLTE. Verizon Wireless also doesn't support WiFi calling or offer an LTE-based Network Extender.

So when the LTE voice option is enabled on an iPhone 6, the phone will actually prefer connecting to a weak and essentially unusable LTE Voice signal instead of the strong CDMA Network Extender signal. This can be "solved" by disabling LTE voice so it will connect to the extender, but in so doing, this prevents you from having HD Audio and Voice/Data at the same time in every other location unless you change this option every time you arrive/leave from the vicinity of the network extender.

You'd think somebody would test this ahead of time, but oh no, it's Verizon, so...
»www.fiercewireless.com/s ··· 14-09-17

Fran Shammo says: "However, he said Wi-Fi calling was "never a top priority" for Verizon. "We built our voice platform so extensively [that] there was never a need for us to tell our customers, 'Oh, our network is not good enough so you need to go on Wi-Fi to complete your call.'"

Sure you did....
