| - verizon anti-spam I ditched their email after they started blocking legitimate emails, yet I was still getting loads of spam. The blocked emails were not sent back to the original sender, but simply vanished into the ether (not in my spam folder either).
They provide a decent internet connection, but for email - forget it. -- aye aye captain!

| Re: Don't even try! I agree. I am trying to implement GMail for a small office and it is meeting with serious friction.
One guy wants to pop it to his computer and can't get remote access. They don't offer IMAP or caching in Outlook. (I was told that people want to use outlook).
Whaaaaaaa.
I personally use Gmail and love it. This is just my personal 2 cents. They block a lot of spam. I would dare to say 99%.
I have used Gmail for business. Less than 50 accounts. for free. It is slick.

| Re: Don't even try! It does work but you cannot pop it with exchange server 2000.
If each person does it stand alone and pops and then leaves a copy on the server, the remote access wont work and deleted emails wont delete from the server.
Its a mess.
But dang Gmail zaps the spam.

| Re: fix email said by morbo :let's fix the spam and email problem. i'm having to abandon email more and more due to all the problems. i don't have the solution, but i'm sure someone does. Odd... I've had the same email address since September of 1995. I've used my email address in a number of easily harvest-able locations. About the only spam I get is when someone with me in their address book gets a worm or as the result of dictionary spamming. I just don't get that much spam in a day (though, the spam filters indicate a few thousand bogus messages get tossed per day).
Point being, there are workable mail solutions.

| Re: Why do people even bother with Verizon email... Totally agree.
It seems that most ISPs just don't care enough about email to satisfy the "serious" user.
I love my BellSouth FastAccess connection, but I finally dropped their email and went to a 3rd party supplier. Haven't had a single problem since.
No port blocking, no lost emails, works from everywhere (hotels, airports, etc). Why anyone who depends on email would stick to their ISP- Verizon or BellSouth, as mentioned here, is beyond me. Especially when reliable email service is either free or very inexpensive- about $11.00 with my own domain that I can take with me, if necessary. -- No good deed goes unpunished.

| Why Verizon email is a PIA to use If Verizon email took some pointers from gmail, it wouldn't be so bad. First of all, they DO, albiet on rare occasions, send legitimate email to the spam folder. That is why one has to choose the option to send spam to the spam folder rather than deleting it automatically. It has to be checked occasionally before it is deleted. Secondly, more spam leaks into the inbox. In order to inform Verizon that spam got through, one has to manually forward it as an attachment to spamdetector.notcaught@verizon.net. Then one must manually delete it from the inbox and delete the forwarded message from the sent mail folder. With gmail, one just clicks on the box next to the errant spam and hits the "Report Spam" button. It's reported and it goes to the spam folder. In gmail, a one button click and a confirmation click is all that is required to delete all the spam from the spam folder. If legitimate email winds up in the spam folder in gmail (it happened to me once in a year), one click sends it to the inbox and the problem is fixed at gmail's end. If legitimate email goes to the spam filter in Verizon (happened to me several times in a year), one has to send a copy as an attachment to spamdetector.update@verizon.net. There is a lot of wisdom in the advice not to use your ISP as your email domain, so that when you change ISPs, you don't have to change your email address. If you have Verizon, that advice is even more important. | |

| Re: I think we're all agreed said by st7860 :Gmail still hasn't implemented a folders feature yet. And they NEVER will. The point of Gmail is, you do not have to sort your messages to keep track of them, you simply search for the one(s) you want.
Also, you can apply labels to your messages, which is basically the same thing: it sorts your messages into categories. But, labels are even better: you can apply multiple labels to a message. Then, click on that label to see all messages with that label, just like clicking on a folder to see all messages inside that folder.

| backpedalling The above thread got me thinking why I'm messing around with two email accounts, and I ought to shift to gmail exclusively. So I made gmail my default. In the first day, two emails bounced, one sent to Comcast and one to Worldnet.att.net. When I found the delivery failure notices, that gmail had sent to the spam folder, they indicated code 550 for abuse/spam. A day later, another email bounced, this time to AOL, I recovered the failure notice from spam folder, same reason (abuse/spam).
Now to choose. Do I go back to Verizon where I am unaware of any one ever sending me an email that didn't arrive, and never having my email bounce and getting occasional spam in my inbox, or do I stick with gmail where I rarely get spam in the inbox, but a significant number of my emails bounce and the failure notice goes to the spam filter? For me, mail delivery failure is unacceptable. Gmail is out, Verizon is in, until I find something better.
