Videotron Offers 120 Mbps Service With 170 GB downstream and 30 GB upstream cap Videotron was the first North American cable operator to deploy speedier DOCSIS 3.0 upgrades in the field, and this week the company announced the launch of a 120 Mbps downstream, 20 Mbps upstream service. According to a Videotron statement, they're calling the new tier "Ultimate Speed Internet 120," and delivering it to about 80% of the greater Québec City area. The tier starts at $150, and comes with a download cap of 170 GB and an upload limit of 30 GB, which the company insists is "well in excess of the current needs of heavy bandwidth users."

We people who know how to use that bandwidth, usually use, at a bare minimum, 200 GB on download ONLY. ( Key word --> a MINIMUM! )
EDIT --> Using all the Download AND upload cap can be done within 3 hours and a half...
Also, Bare with me when I say that the Overage is about 52$/hour if you download at full speed. | |

| Let's use the 170GB download and 30GB upload cap for Videotron.
An HD video episode is ~2GB. Let's go with two of those per day. That's 4GB, 120GB per month.
Add in two hours of Pandora, with Pandora One for 192kbps quality. 173MB per day, ~5GB per month.
Add 30 minutes of decent-quality youTube per day. 1 Mbps, multiplied by 30 minutes, equals 225 MB per day, so ~7GB per month.
Add in updates for four computers at 2GB per computer per month. That number will very, but the cap won't. 8GB.
Add 10GB for heavy web surfing throughout the month.
You're at 150GB. Mix in some Netflix movies or Steam game downloads and you're over your cap.
On uploads, using an online backup service would blow through that cap relatively quickly. Also, since you're buying a high-end tier, you're probably using it for HD video uploads or something like that. 1GB of uploading per day isn't that difficult to hit.
Of course all of the above assumes that you're using your internet as a replacement for TV. No cable company wants that... | |

There seems to be an odd situation that has been building over the last few years whereby the first assumption is that all people who may want to use their connection are breaking copyright 'laws'.
It bothers me, as it shows that perhaps people have lost their imagination; how communications can only fit into a narrowly defined set of rules. Even DSLR forum mods used to actively dissuade these people from making these types of comments, not so much anymore.
Anyway, I hope I'm wrong about how people's thinking about bandwidth/caps are becoming more narrowly defined, but I don't think so.

And with the 1st line, you admit that you are using your connection for "company use" .... ie.... Hosting
Thus a home account is not right for you. Thus the 170 or 200GB would not apply to you on a business account

kudos:20 | Re: Comcast = 200GB Cap Videotron's business services have no caps on their 2.5, 7.5, or 10Mbps tiers, but their 30Mbps and 50Mbps tiers do have caps (250 and 300 GB per month respectively).
However, it should be noted that their most popular residential package, their 7.5Mbps cable internet for $42.95/mth, comes with a 30GB combined cap. Total.
I'm sure Netflix HD streaming is great fun on a 30GB per month cap. If you watch one HD movie a day, you'll hit that cap in 1-2 weeks.

| Just a play This is merely a political play to be able to advertise as "the fastest ISP in Quebec/Canada". Obviously such ridiculous caps are nowhere near the needs of someone who would pay 150$ for that kind of speed, but they don't mind saying things like "well in excess of the current needs of heavy bandwidth users" because 90% of the population, even the journalists themselves, have no idea what gigabytes are in the first place.
Considering most recent games released on Steam/D2D can be over 20GB, one HD episode is 1.3GB to stream each, 170GB is very little. 500GB would make a lot more sense, especially for that kind of money. | |
