And why shouldn't Videotron/Quebecor be against those who steal its products? Only populists who think companies should all be charitable organizations giving away its products at cost think otherwise. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

| | | Re: Videotron is against crooks - oh my!! Because they shouldn't be allowed to use their market power (in a relatively non-competitive market) as an internet provider to pursue the goals of other arms of the company. IMO they should be forced to divest.
And yet again, copyright infringement is copyright infringement, not stealing. You can feel it's as bad, you can feel it's worse, you can feel it's a lot like stealing, but you don't get to reinvent the language to suit your rhetorical ends.

Secondly, in Canada it's legal to download. So even if it was "stealing" it's only the people handing the items out who are breaking the law, the people receiving the items are not breaking the law. Thirdly, there are already many paths the copyright owners can take to charge those who violate their copyright. The only thing these proposed Three Strikes Laws will do is give them the power to ban people from the internet without any legal oversight. Here's a hint TK, if someone didnt like your posts, they would be able to file fake DMCA/other copyright complaints, and after three or four you would have your internet taken away. No judge, no jury, no nothing.

I guess pro-capitalist perspectives don't bode too well when it can also be applied to said capitalists - LOL

| | | I hope it happens to you to get wrongfully accused 3 times in a row and then loose your internet connection. It's the only way to make you understand why such a system not only is deeply flawed but also illegal.

If Time Warner (who is on a tear recently concerning its music products) started monitoring customers lines looking for people accessing its own music, and started applying a 3-strikes policy against it, then customers would feel obligated to get permission for fair uses just to keep their Internet access. That's not right.
I'm against "stealing," too, but a lot of harm to freedom can be done in the name of "crime prevention." -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon -- KJ7RL ... Do something! ...

said by Robrr:in »Videotron Raises Caps :Just reading this on the CBC website: The two Vidéotron plans, Ultimate Speed Internet 30 and Ultimate Speed Internet 50, did have the drawback of relatively low monthly download limits of 30 gigabytes and 50 gigabytes, respectively.
However, the company said Wednesday it was upgrading those limits to 70 GB for Ultimate Speed Internet 30 and 100 GB for Ultimate Speed Internet 50. » www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2009···oad.html -- Robb Topolski -= funchords.com =- Hillsboro, Oregon -- KJ7RL ... Do something! ...

Actually, it's worse than that. It's $8/GB ($7.95)!

The fact of the matter is, fighting piracy has never been the concern, controlling the method of media distribution has been.
And currently media distribution organizations make tons of money from the current system, to remove the need for them is what P2P really does and lowers the cost of distribution to basically $1.
And the punishment? Back to there system of media distribution or no media for you at all.

| Some thoughs on community run distributed internet Perhaps we should take a hard look at each individual home running it's only small part of the internet, on a distributed system.
what if everyone in my city had open wifi connections for a distributed internet connection? each home storing a few hundred gigs of content, shared to everyone, other homes with redundant content. each wireless router has dynamic routing protocols to the other, antennas on the roof and running at just under 1 watt. bit torrent type distribution is used so if i want to download an mp3 or video, all of my neighbors in the city send it to me at once.
no ISP to contend with. no rules against what I can or cannot say or do on this network. no greedy capitalist facist rule on it. community run and maintained media, free for everyone.
cities could be peered by companies who would prefer to empower their customers rather than control them.
seems impossible? i think if people keep getting pushed by big companies like this, they'll start to push back.
