Two major players both seeing serious demand
(old news - 09:11AM Tuesday Apr 24 2007)
tags: Fiber · business · alternatives · municipal
Bristol Tennessee Essential Services says their deployment of municipal fiber in Bristol, Virginia, is well ahead of schedule with more users signing up than projected. The city’s electric utility began offering fiber broadband and TV service in November 2005 and VoIP service last year. They entered the local market after they saw the success of Bristol Virginia Utilities (BUV), who we first mentioned back in 2002 and who has had to struggle to meet demand. The city of Bristol won a lawsuit against a state-level ban on municipal broadband. Also see this report on the local competitive landscape, which notes how the project has been cited as both a success and failure by political groups trying to defend their positions on muni-broadband.

MuniX? FAILURE

It's a failure because it can't meet demand! If this were a larger carrier like TWC they'd have no problem! {wait..}

Later they'll be a failure because they're not growing at breakneck speeds anymore.

Finally they'll be a failure just because AT&T says so..

I'll also add an obligatory, "I can't BELIEVE they're spending the poor taxpayers money on this project!?!?! OMFG!"

On a serious note, congrats to them.

this is outrageous!

how dare they publicize a muni fiber success! don't people know that ALL muni broadband projects are evil and bound to fail? The Heartland Institute and the other astroturfers assure us this is so.

It will work

I am depending on this for a new form of broadband. We have all kinds of support from the local and state government. Also, they are already laying the fiber in some parts of my county now.

This is Progress?

$50 for 5/256 internet and combine that with a weak TV lineup.

Wow.

Re: This is Progress?

Wow, that is weak. They're better off with DSL and the cheaper rates.

Wow.
Don't forget that electric customers are also subsidizing these rates. I'd hate to see what the "real" prices would be without that.

Re: This is Progress?

They operate under a very similar scenario as telcos. There is a heavily government regulated side and a for-profit side. The power they provide to customers is regulated. Fiber internet/telephone/tv is "for profit" and stands on it's own.

Of course BVU a few months back had a hard time getting customers to swallow that after a contract renewal raised their power rates and they passed them along to the customers.

...............

You have to keep in mind that this is a rural area and things will start slowly until they get broke in. This is a milestone for this area. Just this evening on my way home I got stuck in construction and it ended up being the contractors laying more of the fiber.

TN not VA

Heh.. Any proofreading happening? It's Bristol TENNESSEE Essential Services and they don't have a deployment in Bristol VIRGINIA. BVU just across the state line does though... But anyway, I'm just 20 miles away in a larger city, no fiber for me...

Re: TN not VA

BVU is in partnership with the Cumberland Plateau Planning Committee and is responsible for the deployment and lighting of the fiber optic backbones in southwest Virginia...look it up!!

Re: TN not VA

Um, my point was that the article stated that BTES had a deployment in Southwest VA. That would be incorrect, BVU is in that state and BTES is in Northeast TN. Neither entity can cross the state line to offer services in the neighboring state. It was basically a typo... I'm quite familiar with BVU's system, we pay them a bunch of money per month for co-location and bandwidth.
