Within the last two days there has been a new attack on Twitter users from Koobface, a virus that is familiar to Facebook and MySpace users.
This virus infects the PCs of users with a variant of the Koobface malware. This malware sends bogus tweets when the user logs into Twitter. Twitter announced that they were currently suspending all accounts that they detect sending such bogus tweets. If they suspend your account, they will send you an email notifying you of the suspension. This email also includes tips for removing the malware from your PC. Trend Micro has a fix for Twitter users.
According to Wikipedia, the Koobface computer worm is an anagram of Facebook ("face" and "book" change order and "koob" is "book" in reverse), and targets the users of the social networking websites Facebook, MySpace, hi5, Bebo, Friendster and now, Twitter. In Facebook Koobface spreads by delivering messages to people that are 'friends' of someone on Facebook whose computer has already been infected. The messages contains subject headers such as "Paris Hilton Tosses Dwarf On The Street", "LOL", and "My friend catched [sic] you on hidden cam". Upon receipt, the message directs the recipients to a third-party website unaffiliated with Facebook where they are prompted to download what is purported to be an update of the Adobe Flash player. If they download and execute the file, they will infect their computer with Koobface. Koobface then commandeers their surfing activities and directs users to contaminated websites when they attempt to access search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing.
