Vivendi Agrees, Comcast/NBC Deal Soon
$5.8 billion for Vivendi's stake in NBC Universal
by Karl Bode Tuesday 01-Dec-2009 tags: business · Comcast
Tipped by SLD See Profile
According to the New York Times, Vivendi executives have agreed with General Electric in principle on a price to offload their 20% stake in NBC Universal, eliminating the final obstacle in Comcast's planned acquisition of the media giant. Recent leaks from inside the very leaky "secret" negotiations indicated that Vivendi wanted about $500-$900 million more than GE was willing to pay. The word now is that Vivendi is willing to part with their share for a cool $5.8 billion. As it stands, there's a few loose ends to clear up, but the final deal should be officially announced by Thursday, according to chatty insiders.

Yea, they are big. Right now though, ATT is Larger than Comcast. Comcast is just larger in the cable industry for subscribers, but now, they truly will be HUGE

No shit.

All you need to do is change the name of the company and it's awfully similar...

Agreed. What baffles me is that the telcos got so large they made them split per being regulated. (BELL) WHy are the Cable Companies not regulated? Why are they not reauired to resale their service like phones compnaies do such as CLEC? some one please educate me!

Because the Bells, original AT&T, were built with a lot of government money.

The cable companies have spent private money to build their networks. Yes, they probably unfairly got some franchises that helped them become what they are, but they used their money to build, unlike how AT&T started out.

It's the same reason Verizon (made up of former Bells) doesn't have to resell FIOS to every company that wants to sell into people's homes. Because they are building it with private funds. Their copper plant was subsidized by the government so they must still resell it.

Content owners vs Content delivery

Content delivery, should to be decoupled from content ownership. As a customer/patron it should not matter how I access content. First-mile providers should not be in a position to dictate how/when/and what it costs to access information. First-mile providers should deliver connectivity, content owner deliver content and never the twain should meet, to coin a phase.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. I assume NBC gets ghettoized. Primary availability to Comcast customers. I assume other Cable vendors will be loath to paying Comcast for content. Makes me glad to be an Over the Air (OTA) TV viewer.

Granted the FCC? won't allow it but when this deal goes through, What does that mean for people that don't have Cable? Will there come a time that OTA TV won't exist?

They already do that now. Comcast already owns E!, Versus, Golf Channel, Style and G4

Makes me glad to be an Over the Air (OTA) TV viewer.

Until Comcast turns NBC into a cable only network then Disney sees what a great idea that is and does that with ABC. Then Fox sees how great that works out and does that too. After CW, MyNetwork and ION go belly up then all you'll be left with in about 10 years is CBS and Jesus channels.

I doubt that will happen for a long time, if ever.
What drives these high values is advertising revenue, which increases with the more eyeballs exposed.
Cutting off broadcast would kill a large part of that revenue.
The more likely scenerio is MORE exposure ad coordination across ALL sources, so if you watch OTA, cable, online, or TV everywhere, you would see a similar ad at any given time (exact content and style modified to fit the limitations of each medium and adjusted to fit the demographic of the typical user of each venue)
It won't be about less, it will be about more of the same

MYNetwork is part of fox and does have some local sports at least in Chicago.
CW / WGN Chicago has the best weather man in the city as well local sports.
NBC likely is forced to have Sundry Nigh football on OTA maybe it will be likely MNF only Free and on OTA for the local team.

Fox can just be SKY 1 and be not on OTA but they should pick up SGU from sci-fi as well.

As long as that doesn't happen to PBS we are OK. But if commercial stations go away Congress and the FCC will probably be very aggressive in selling off the bandwidth to the highest bidder putting an end to over the air (OTA) TV.

I was in the hospital several years ago. At the time I was debating about upgrading our antenna or going with Cable or Sat. Watching cable was an enlightening experience. While there were interesting shows that were unavailable (OTA) ratio of commercial to program was so bad I pretty much lost interest.

Will we lose the wide range of TV shows, old and new, if Comcast pulls the plug on Hulu?

Less tv

I suppose I'll be watching even less of certain shows in the near future. Comcrap can't handle what they have now as it is...Pay more for less and 'Increased value of service' price hikes are coming soon..again.

The Olympics

Just another thing you won't be seeing, DirecTV subscribers, as the NBC/Universal conglomerate pushes some of the extended coverage to Versus.

Thus forcing more people to view commercial free pirated streams of the Olympics.

When are those execs going to figure out that they're hurting themselves almost as much as they're hurting their competitors.

When Ted Turner tried to do this with NBC and was turned down on many fronts. I read his book.
I would love to know what he thinks about this deal.
