Vivendi execs want more cash for their 20% stake

Comcast's dream of acquiring NBC Universal can't come to fruition until Vivendi executives sell their 20% stake in the company, according to the Los Angeles Times. Obviously the value of that 20% differs greatly depending on how much the company is deemed to be worth -- and according to the Times, Vivendi wants that number to be at least $500-$900 million greater than what's currently on the table. GE has placed a value on NBC Universal of $27 billion to $30 billion. While Vivendi and GE hash out the numbers, consumer advocates continue to lambast the deal as only really being good for industry executives, giving the companies yet more market power, and the authority to restrict competition from Hulu (which Comcast would gain control over after the deal).

I think

Comcast should wait as NBC sinks more to lower the value of their stocks. The longer they wait the ship will sink.

With the constant Green theology, it will happen sooner or later. Never mind real environmental problems, for example the plastic grye.

Cable channels eventually with kill off NBC, ABC and CBS since they are creating content not reality shows. Even the cable reality shows are better than the crap on the networks.

Why do people watch their nightly news? Same crap on cable you can watch all day.

I don't have cable. Just Cable HSI and Digital Voice (use Google Voice for LD---FREE!).

Interesting

But couldn't Comcast just buy the GE stake and any other company stakes and leave vivendi holding a bag ?

Maybe I got this wrong.

Re: Interesting

Comcast could in theory buy GE's 80%, but that isn't what GE wants. GE wants to maintain a 49% minority ownership in the new company, with Comcast controlling 51%. With Vivendi holding 20% GE could sell 41% of the company to Comcast, but I don't think that is what they want.

And this is not a monopoly?

So? uh.. where's the FTC and FCC in this situation because if this isn't a monopoly in progress, I don't know what is.

This is sort of a "If there is no one in the forest to hear a tree fall is there a sound?" In the case of NBC, if nobody is watching can there be a monopoly? I for one have not watched anything on NBC for over 20 years, and I don't plan on watching NBC/CNBC/MSNBC anytime soon.

they own NBC, Universal Studios, NBC Universal Television Group, NBC News, USA, Syfy, CNBC, MSNBC cable TV, NBC.com, MSNBC.com, iVillage, Bravo, qubo, SendMeRSS, Telemundo Television Studios, The Weather Channel, Hulu and more.
USA, Bravo and SYFY are big and will be a big mess if they where forced off of dish and direct tv by comcarp.

Re: And this is not a monopoly?

Hmm except for SyFy channel I don't watch any of the others. I don't watch SyFy much anymore either except for Stargate Universe (SGU). I am trying to get into the SGU and I am having a hard time, I am trying to convince myself this new series does not suck.

Not good.

Comcast should not be allowed to control NBC, one of the most prolific networks in the world. Nothing good will come of this.

I'd much rather have it owned by an entertainment company than by a defense contractor.

How could you mistake Comcast for an entertainment company?

GE, a major employer here, makes large and small motors, light bulbs, aircraft engines and controls, power transmission equipment, medical equipment for hospitals (X Ray, MRI, CAT scan, etc), deisel locomotives, and much more. Their role as a defense contractor is small compared to everything else they do.

While Comcast may be a huge company too, they are focused on providing entertainment and connectivity directly to end users, just like Time-Warner. Just like Liberty/Direct TV. etc.

There is nothing wrong with any of this that cannot be addressed by adding specific conditions to approval of the sale.

One condition

As long as Comcast is forced to divest Hulu as a condition, I could care less what they do with the rest of NBCU.

Re: One condition

But, it seems as though Comcast would rather their subscribers didn't watch classic TV shows and movies that aren't on any channel that they carry. They'd prefer that their customers spend more time watching cable, even if what they want to watch is on the internet.

So, if they gain control of NBC, they'll want to strip Hulu of all NBC/Universal content, hoping to make it far less of an online destination for fans of classic TV and newer shows they may have missed.

So, why isn't there a cable channel that has the all-time classic TV of Hulu? There once were such channels, but now most of those shows are online. Too bad. I'd rather not watch such shows on my small PC monitor when I could watch them on by big flat screen TV from the comfort of my living room.

So, if they are worried about online TV viewing, then, bring back classic TV to cable (and/or add Retro TV to their national lineup) and then they can forget about Hulu as a threat to their business.
