Touchmods team offers up new application...
09:21AM Thursday Jan 03 2008 by Karl
tags: hardware · VoIP
The Touchmods team have released a SIP-VoIP application that allows you to use VoIP over the iPod Touch via Wi-Fi. Though the Touch lacks a microphone, the group have released instructions for building one (or you can buy one from them). Obviously the software is probably still buggy and installing the system will void your warranty. You can see a video of the new application in action here on YouTube. The product FAQ is here.

I have a brilliant idea for a touch hack.

Go buy an iphone.

just imagine what these people could achieve if they did something useful.

Imagine what could be done if you posted something useful.

VoIP on the EDGE network I would imagine would be pretty pad due to the speed, etc.
To be able to be on my wireless network and make a call negates the need for me to buy an iPhone. When not on a wireless network I have my Blackberry.

So acually they did something very useful.

Most modern cell phones can play MP3 files... why not just use one of these?

"Any phone", not quite. The big issue the iPhone solves is the ability to pan and zoom on a full size site quickly and efficiently. It does this with hardware accelerated video and the two-finger touch-screen approach. Only phones that can do something comparable to address those issues can even hope to compare to the iPhones in terms of internet browsing.

The $80/mo - $960/yr service plan comes to mind...

No iPod dock connector?

My iPhone is the only smartphone that I can put in my car and get full integration with my factory radio.

How is this NOT useful? You lost me here...

So instead of giving props to the coding community, you just wanna turn them into retail zombies and purchase crappy coded crap from Bestbuy...lol

Not really a useful piece of advise for us Verizon customers. Everyhting Apple puts out always has to have some major restrictions. Is Steve Jobs ever going to learn or does he have to die before people can get decent products?

New term for this

Hacking The Brick describes a hack that will inevitably ruin the product you are hacking.
Can also be called Brick Making, Brick Hacking, or throwing money down the toilet.

Re: New term for this

And this comes from someone who hasn't hacked an Iphone or has one..lol..kinda funny if you ask me.

I have hacked my iphone and love it. No problems, no bricks, etc.

Only those who know how to follow instructions, ie, you know, like count, 1, 2 , 3. should hack your phone. If you bricked yours, then, well, guess you didn't follow the instructions. I did mine in 5 minutes.

Re: New term for this

Ohhh such the BS...
Wait for the new patch, hack and make a brick my fine young lady, hack and make a brick.

Newest upgrade will brick your iPhone in a matter of minutes.
All you have done is traded some functionality today for no functionality tomorrow.

It actually has nothing to do with your skills at hacking the phone, it has everything to do with Apple and how they apply firmware and software upgrades to undo what you have done.

I firmly believe that if you own a product, you should be able to do with it what you want, and configure it in any way. Unfortunately Apple does not, maybe it is a throwback to the days when they were Motorola inside and didn't license their hardware...who knows.

cool app

i think this is great. i modded my ipod touch the day i got it, and its a thousand times better thanks to all the coders out there. this mod dosnt even involve the iphone, so cheer up lads. this is just another way of sticking it to the mobile phone providers we all know and pay. i have a blackberry as well, and it does play mp3's. but it does not hold 16 gigs, and the library interface isnt nearly as friendly as the ipod touch's, so thats my 2 cents.
