VoIP with Google
Calling Grand Central
by KathrynV Sunday 08-Jul-2007 tags: VoIP
Earlier this week, Google announced its acquisition of GrandCentral Communications which marks the beginning of being able to get your VoIP services through the ever-growing Google. Users report that the system looks a lot like Gmail in its organization, “allowing you to organize your incoming calls and voicemail, and even block "spam" calls.” The benefits to Google, of course, include more users on the site more often, new ad options and the push to unsettle traditional phone companies. You can reserve a number here but the project is still in Beta and requires an invitation from Google so you might not get your VoIP right away.

I've been using

I've used GC for a while and I hope Google doesn't ruin it. It's a really cool product that still needs some refinement but it was working very well for me. Google, you better not screw it up!

Re: I've been using

I've had it ~1Yr and it works pretty well. Fingers crossed that it survives Google's take over.

If only the Verizon CSRs worked this well.

I've also been using it for a few months and so far it's been a good experience. For a hot second after finding out they were going to be acquired I worried if the service would suffer but so far so good. Blocking telemarketers and transferring calls to different phones in mid conversation are two of my fav features.

Re: GTALK

Best part of GCentral is that it was founded by the Dialpad founders.

Not really VoIP

It's more of a service for managing your existing phones:

said by Google :

We're pleased to announce that we have acquired GrandCentral Communications, a company that provides services for managing your voice communications. GrandCentral is an innovative service that lets users integrate all of their existing phone numbers and voice mailboxes into one account, which can be accessed from the web. We think GrandCentral's technology fits well into Google's efforts to provide services that enhance the collaborative exchange of information between our users.

According to the reservation page, they will have Canadian numbers. The dropdown does show that. I myself got an invite but only an American number for now until they start offering those numbers.

May I have an invite?

If someone would be kind enough to give this old timer of BR an invite, I'd appreciate it very much.
