Vodafone, Verizon Both Eyeing 100Mbps LTE
Two carriers will see broadband network integration....
(old news - 06:46PM Thursday Sep 20 2007)
tags: business · wireless · bandwidth · world · networking
Europe's Vodafone owns a 45 percent stake in Verizon Wireless, and despite rumors a few months back that the two companies would be buying eachother out, that's not happening. In fact, despite Vodafone being GSM/HSPA and Verizon Wireless being CDMA/EVDO, the two companies are planning to migrate to the same fourth generation wireless broadband solution. LTE is their flavor of choice:
"Adopting the same network technology would allow the two operators to work more closely together, potentially cut costs, and enable their subscribers to roam onto each other's networks. Verizon Wireless currently has more than 62 million subscribers, while Vodafone has more than 200 million customers around the world."

3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution) technology is theoretically capable of speeds up to 100Mbps, with latency as low as 20ms. It's also going to be AT&T's preferred flavor moving forward, though implementation is obviously a long way off. Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin tells Reuters that LTE won't even begin seeing use until at least 2010, and complete integration of Vodafone and Verizon Wireless platforms probably won't happen until 2015.

The big question

is do we even need 100mbps on a cellphone?

Re: The big question

even bigger question for you. Have you ever tethered the cell phone to a laptop in need of net on the go ?

How about using an Air Card to get 3G service ? If so there is your answer.

So are they also going to upgrade the pipe to the towers?

LTE running off of a few T3's to a tower isn't goin to help much....

dont forget a TOS that bans the use of the only apps that have a reason for a high speed low latency line(gaming, internet radio, ftp, etc)

That's NICE!

.....Meanwhile,I'm buzzing right along on my VeriZon 0kb/0kb lickity split DSL connection!

Heh,Verizon can't deploy chicken shit dsl in major metropolitan areas so what makes you think they'll deliver 100MPS LTE?

I think BBR is taking bribes to promote Verizon propaganda!

The guys at Verizon droplift fine automobiles and fine cheeses by helicopter on the first of each month. I don't ask questions, I just keep writing pieces that compliment their ethics -- their lobbying particularly.

Ill stick to EVDO

It might not be the fastest, but it sure has good coverage and is reliable. 1mbit / 128 is fine by me via my cell phone. I won't believe the hype these other companies make, until I see it working in action. Until then, 1mbit / 128 does me fine. After all, when I do go somewhere, being able to check email, look up directions, and simple things are all I need. This is not to say I wouldn't take 100mbit. Merely, I am saying I don't believe the hype, when we can't ever get 100mbit in our houses here.

Sounds like my Verizon cellphone good for next 4 yrs

So I am not going to worry about this at all. Not when my next contract comes due in 2 yrs, but 2 yrs after that LTE may come in to play.

Why worry?

Verizon will meter it out at 64KB anyway........

Leaky wireless?

Won't wide-open 802.11n be leaking like limits on a war spending bill anyways?
And you want to throw money away at Verizon.. for what?

Getting 12MPS from Sprint Mobile Broadband EVDO RevA.

Well, that's my D/L speed at night time anyway and I am way in the boonies but close to an Interstate. Using a Sierra Wireless 595U.
The WISP service in my area offers a 1.5Mps Symmetrical connection if I use a Yagi.
I get 1.5Mps d/L & 500kps U/L during most of the day & I am happy. I left WB satellite (didn't everybody leave them!) Before that I had Starband. Before that I had Dialup.

Looking forward to 4G 100MPS service; but even half that speed would make me happy as long as the latency is under a 100ms.
Folks in the cities don't realize how good it is to have options. Setting up a 4G network wil force competion from Verizon & ATT and even the Satellite companies to step up their technology or get out of the way.Believe the telecoms would then bend over backwards to get Fiber to the Home implemented. Everyone except Verizon has been dragging their feet on putting in major broadband changes.

same technology

I like the idea some day all carriers around the world will use the same wireless technology, but I'm sure one of them will figure out a way muck it all up.

Nice to see formal plans for 4G announced by the Boyz in Red

I'm glad to see forward traction towards a common standard between the two giants. Although complete integration may take 5+ years, we may see the initial benefits much sooner.

Something tells me that Voda may have a lot under their sleeves. With a compatible network, there is no reason why they wouldn't want to gain 100% full control of the venture they have with Verizon when the time is right.

The completion of the converged LTE platform comes around a time when market saturation should really kick into gear and our beloved US monster carriers will have to fight tooth and nail to steal eachother's customers away. Gone will be the days where we see 1+ million new subs per quarter.

Verizon was smart to announce this now. This will persuade developers to build the platform at more competitive rates now that such a large mobile population is committing to it. They were previously wary about joining LTE due to cost constraints involved between the CDMA > LTE transition.

Converting to GSM?

I don't suppose that this means Verizon will commit to GSM, does it?

That sounds too good to be true.

Re: Converting to GSM?

Verizon will not be commiting to GSM at all. LTE is the next generation (4G) in the evolutionary path of GSM (2G->3G->GPRS->EDGE->HSDPA->HSUPA->LTE). Verizon's current network is based on Qualcomm's CDMA air interface and is different than GSM. Going forward pretty much all of the 4G networks will be using OFDMA as the air interface modulation/access type. Qualcomm being qualcomm decided that the next generation of it's 1xEV-DO revA/B network will also be OFDMA but did not want to be part of the LTE group and created their own standard UMB. Verizon choosing LTE is a HUGE deal since Sprint (the other major Qualcomm CDMA network) has already jumped ship and chose WiMAX as their 4G offering leaving Qualcomm's UMB standard on shakey ground. Vodafone owns 45% of Verizon and has something like 600 million subsribers world wide vs verizon's 60 million. I'm pretty sure that this move was more of Vodafone wanting to have a reliable upgrade path for their customer base that will at the same time allow the verizon users access to their international markets and services.

Re: Converting to GSM?

Heh heh...I just realized that I wrote my last post quite hastily. I intended to say "convert" instead of "commit." Although, in a sense it is a commitment.

I already knew that Verizon uses CDMA; that's one of the reasons why I don't like them. It's not the actual CDMA, but the implementation, since Verizon chose not to use RUIM cards.

When I asked about Verizon converting to GSM, I meant any variant of GSM, whether it be GPRS or HSOPA. And I get the impression that LTE is a newer version of GSM. Is that correct?

But if this means that Verizon is going to start using the technology that nearly everyone else uses, then great. I don't always say "follow the leader," but I really do think that all mobile phone networks should use the same technology, especially since it's so easy to carry a phone from one country to another.

Spectrum issues

I wonder what spectrum Verizon will use? They probably don't have enough spectrum in 800/1900mhz to do 4G and will have to maintain CDMA for many years during deployment. And the 700mhz spectrum is being chopped up so much there won't be much room for 4G, maybe only 10mhz per market. They may go to LTE but don't expect it to be high performing.

Sprint/Clearwire have around 100mhz avg in 2.5Ghz per market for WiMAX. Plenty of room to do very high speeds, even 1Gbps with 801.16m WiMAX (google for it). Getting backhaul to the towers will be the challenge.

WiMAX has a much better opportunity to get into consumer electronic devices like gameboys/PSP, cameras, GPS devices, etc. LTE will likely be limited to phones and laptop cards - and then there is the spectrum issue for the States. ATT also probably doesn't have enough spectrum to do high performing LTE either.

I'm surprised Qualcomm stock hasn't sunk. They are screwed.

Re: Spectrum issues

I would think that Verizon might try to play in the AWS band. They recently bought up about $2.5 Billion worth of spectrum in the recent auction.

Found this..

Looks like the most is in 20mhz chunks, which is probably not enough to get 100Mbps, but still good performance. Did Verizon buy enough to do this nationwide?

Re: Spectrum issues

Definately not enough for nation wide but they bought pretty large chunks of the midwest and east coast along with Hawaii. They got 20mHz REAs for the Northeast, Southeast, Great Lakes, and Mississippi Valley. 7 20 MHz CMAs in Louisiana and 1 20 MHz BEA in Lake Charles, LA and 1 20 MHz BEA in Honolulu, HI. They got a total of 13 (fairly large) markets/population for their money. The biggest spender in this auction was T-Mobile spending $4 Billion on 120 Markets. Definately shows that they are looking to build their own nationwide network.
