Volume Lowered on Wimax Hype
Wimax: 3% of broadband users by '09
Responding to the same InStat study, the Enquirer leads with "Wimax Likely to Have Limited Success", while Mobile Pipeline runs the headline "WiMAX Could Alter Telecom Industry." Both are responding to new predictions that the oft-hyped wireless broadband technology will likely only grab three percent of total broadband customers world-wide by 2009 - if all goes well. That's a far cry from the Wimax hype of 2004; many proclaimed it would quickly become a competitor for DSL and cable.

If...

...what they were saying about the speeds and/or price is true, and it were to hit my area, I would give it a shot.

What does this say of Intel's planing?

They withdrew from supporting forms of ADSL and placed ALL their broadband chip bets on WiMax.

ummm..a little off?

It will be a bit higher than that. I don't know the logistics they use to figure it out, but I don't think that it will be only 3%. If they get it going soon it could be a real hit because there are alot of people wanting broadband access for cheap.

I personaly want it because I live out in the sticks, and any other type will take awhile to get out there.

Ya think?!

"It" is not really anything new. Just a standardization of various things that are already being done. I think that is the basic point in a nutshell. It was definitely WAY overblown hype!

Price must be right

If the price is right for wimax equipment then we may just get independent ISP competition again, which is good for the consumer. If not we continue consolidation to the bells.

Re: Price must be right

I think the community based either nonprofits or co-ops such as »wirefreevan.com/phpBB2/index.php have the most to gain from WiMax taking off, right now, either WiMax or 802.11x are strong options for a community network, it is simply a matter of will the equipment be out, and affordable enough for deployment. That is the question.
