But they aren't losing so many customers either
(old news - 06:55PM Thursday Aug 07 2008)
tags: business · VoIP
Tipped by LiamJunket See Profile
Vonage has reported second quarter earnings which show that there was only a minimal growth of 2,000 subscribers during the period. These stats are in keeping with reports that subscriber growth for independent VoIP companies is struggling in the face of competition from cable VoIP providers. On the plus side, Vonage’s customer retention improved. The VoIP company believes that lack of growth this quarter was due to a reduction in TV advertising which they hadn’t expected to play such a big role in new subscriptions. They are happy with the numbers for the second quarter and hope to further improve customer service and reduce churn in the months to come.

The Silence says it all....

Lack of TV advertising had nothing to do with it.

What the ... ?
Their advertising is more that ever here. It's become more than annoying. I so wish they would just die.

Where do you live?

I live in the STL area and I don't seem to see any Vonage ads anymore. The only time I might see a Vonage ad is in a website.

Of course, I will personally not sign up because I've heard they're hard to cancel.

I think Callcentric is better, even though equivalent service through them is more expensive than Vonage. Why? It's more flexible.

I don't get it.. if you don't like Vonage, one simply doesn't have to subscribe to it.. why go the length to want others not to have it either?

Vonage has never given me issues in the past with service.. I'd take Vonage over Comcast CDV anyday.

Vonage has been nothing but great. No problems, no issues. Just like the old land line of old. I hope it lasts.

Vonage

Had vonage going on 2 days now, seems pretty decent. Sound is a bit jumbled, but I think after some traffic shaping in my router, all should be well. The V portal is pretty cool. I like how it has it's own bandwidth test right in it.

vonage has been great

I've been a vonage user for the last 3 years and have had no problems.

The only complaint I have is when will they implement call blocking.

I keep on getting calls from collection agencies for some person who use to have my number and I can't get a hold of anybody to tell them to stop calling. Call blocking would be great for this.

This sounds like a potential problem with any number, whether it's POTS, VOIP, or mobile.

Is it an option to just change your number? If I weren't planning on moving soon I'd consider changing my POTS number since I have the same problem as you do with it.

Talk to the agency, tell them to hold on while you get your checkbook, and put the phone down. If you have unlimited you should be fine!

As far as Vonage, I have had them for about 5 - 6 years. Quality is great and anytime I had trouble it was due to the ISP, my router, or something on my end. In the beginning there where a few outages, maybe 2 a year the first 3 years, but nothing other than that.

I think lack of advertising is a great thing. They need to concentrate on there customer service. The thing about Vonage that I always tell people is, Vonage is great unless you have to call them, then you may as well switch.

All incoming calls are free anyway..

what he SHOULD do it get an FDCPA lawyer and sue them for their violations of the federal law and profit from it.

B I N G O !

This is exactly what subscribers have been asking for in the last two years I've been with Vonage, (and a few years before that I understand), with absolute silence from Vonage on when or if there will be implementation.

If they cannot satisfy their existing customer base on simple desired service features, they NEED to go extinct.

Re: vonage has been great

Does Verizon offer this option? My point being if they do I do not know about it.

Calling Verizon is not too different. They charge more and they are not going to offer any new features any time soon.

With that little point, please explain further. Is there a better service than Vonage? Consider everything, costs, features, quality, and let me know because I will switch quickly.

Not too shaby

It's been 11 months here and no issues. It's good to hear that they are still hanging in there.

A Great Service

i've been using vonage for 6 years here in ga,. works perfectly for me. no issues. i'm paying 40% of what bell south charged and getting so, so much more for it(coast to coast local calls etc). unfortunate that others have had probs, but for me vonage is the best thing that ever happened to the phone.

Good service but...

I have Vonage for a couple of years. I'm 100% happy with their service but the only problem is the $24.99 + 2.50 for tax is up to $33.50 a month. If they keep increasing their fees I'm going to have to switch over to the cable triple-play plan.

Re: Two words...

I've had one for quite some time and I've never found it to be unreliable. I've had more trouble with my cell service than anything else- you know, service not available, call dropped, etc...

But I've never had any trouble with my broadband connections, where ever they've been. So consequently I've never had trouble with my MagicJack.

Do you speak from experience? Do have you had a MJ?

Re: Two words...

I speak from experience. I tried to run it on a server that I have at home and is running all the time. The new version of the software doesn't work on Windows Server 2003, so I'm using the older version. Sometimes it quits running for no apparent reason.

I have problems with sound quality. I sometimes hear loud screeches when the other party is talking. Sometimes I hear echoes or a hollow sound. Tech support's responses both times I contacted them was to adjust the microphone and speaker volume in the software. One response contradicted the other.

I have had Vonage for 4 or 5 years. In the past year, I may have had to reboot the Vonage device once. Sound is the same as POTS. It just works. I have a FIOS broadband connection.

My comments about not reliable are compared to Vonage, not POTS. I haven't had a POTS line in 7 years or more.

My reading has shown that some people have good luck while others don't.

I love Vonage

have been with them for two years with no problems. Digital voice from cable company costs a lot more and if you make international calls it will be as expensive as the phone company.

The price is good. I would switch to magic jack or ooma, but I don't think their (MJ or ooma) business model make sense for the long term.

Or perhaps....

They're running out of people with reliable ISPs or who are willing to trade a reliable phone service for a lower price.

My main reasons for not using voip:
1. My local Telco (AT&T) has had 100% uptime (at least AFAIK, if it has been down, it came back up before I noticed) on my POTS landline.
2. My cableco ISP (Currently TWC/RR) does not have 100% uptime on my internet connection. (Though Comcast came close--after they fixed the line to my house!)

Vonage can be great all it wants -- my ISP isn't. I don't use my phone (cell or land) enough to justify an extra line of any sort, either.
