WOW: Comcast/NBC Merger Would Slow Network Upgrades
Super TV giant would abuse position, insists competitor's CEO
by Karl Bode 08:55AM Thursday Jul 15 2010
Cable operator Wide Open West took their shot at the Comcast hearings this week by claiming that the merger would restrict their ability to upgrade their own network. How exactly is that even possible? According to WOW CEO Colleen Abdullah, Comcast is already using its market power to prohibit deals with broadcasters that would allow them to offer TV Anywhere Internet video services (though it's not clear TV Anywhere really matters in the face of Internet video, given its brute force approach to forcing the traditional model online). Though Abdullah also notes a freshly merged NBC/Comcast would likely force rivals to pay exorbitant retransmission consent fees.

PBBBBTTTT Wow should talk

WOW is a cable overbuilder in my area that does a ton of advertising, so I am pretty familiar with them.

Considering Comcast's launch of D3 and the all digital transition (100 HD channles on most areas now), WOW shouldnt really be complaining. In my area, they are inexpensive, but really dont have the offerings Comcast and UVerse have. Concerning internet, they do thave a 15/2 connection, compared to Comcasts 22/5 and 50/10, and ATTs 24/3, but it has no powerboost, and their HD and OnDemand offerings are pitiful.

Re: PBBBBTTTT Wow should talk

How much is 15/2 in your area? Last I heard, WOW was kind of pricing themselves out of the market for internet-only service, particularly on higher tiers.

For my address.....

WOW 15/2 $72.99 standalone

Comcast 16/2 $67.95 Standalone

UVerse 24/3 (Starts at) $65. I couldnt find any more specifc details, but I believe its about $75

Re: PBBBBTTTT Wow should talk

Hmm, so when you look at it WOW is right in line with Comcast, albeit more expensive and without PowerBoost. Is there modem rental on top of that?

Also, nice to see that u-Verse pulls ahead here...assuming you can get net-only service.

Re: PBBBBTTTT Wow should talk

Yes, there is $5 modem rental fee on top of the monthly for WOW, so $72.99 becomes $77.99.

Prohibiting deals with others

Exclusivity and making deals dependent on shutting out other businesses is anti-competitive. Sounds like actual interstate commerce that Congress could be regulating. I'd write my Congressman if I had one.

Boo-Hoo-Hoo this is unfair they get to abuse their position and we don't have the money to buy out another network and do it ourselves

WOW is crying wolf looking for leverage in future deals. Comcast has already agreed to conditions with the Justice Dept that prohibits what WOW is complaining about and she knows it.

Expanding in CLE

As long as they keep up the expanding in my area to service my house this summer that's all that matters to me! I'll be happy to leave TWC for them. Especially since their prices are less and they offer more.

Considering these two are merging, that really is not that much of an exaggeration for customers

Laugh and mock all you want but our TV prices keep sky-rocketing for a reason
