WSJ Downplays AT&T, Echostar Deal
Don't expect deal 'any time soon'
by Karl Bode Wednesday 17-Oct-2007 tags: satellite · Video · competition · business · telco · AT&T DSL Service · Dish Network
As we mentioned yesterday, rumors have been flying that AT&T is preparing to acquire Echostar, who the

company already partners with in order to offer satellite TV and a hybrid DBS/DSL service dubbed Homezone. The Wall Street Journal today pours a little cold water on the potential deal, claiming they don't believe it will be taking off any time soon:

Turns out a number of bankers have been pitching the Dish business to AT&T, but they haven't been solicited by the telecom giant in a formal "bake-off" to see who gets the gig. Also, should EchoStar go ahead with the breakup, it could have to go into a moratorium for an estimated six months to two years to keep the deal's tax-free status.

Citi Investment Research analyst Jason Bazinet yesterday guesstimated that there was a "65 percent chance AT&T buys DISH within 12 months."

AT&T's Size

I dunno about you guys but I am glad that this is a rummor, AT&T seems to be getting a little too big for my comfort.

I was thinking the same thing...I would rather have 10 average size companies then 1 large company that stiffens competition.

Stiffens?

Utterly squashes, crushes, vaporizes, pulverizes and destroys (your home planet of Alderran) the competition!

there are many players out there, at&t is not the only game

I think a merger would do well. I see much of the positive from the at&t merger with bellsouth. The company has become much more efficient. I believe these efficiencies will enable them to lower prices and make it better for consumers. It's already happening.

Really, you think so?

This author says the lack of a "bake-off" proves AT&T is not buying anyone.

Meanwhile, in another column the exact same author is claiming AT&T could buy DTV.

His statements are totally inconsistent. Why should I believe this guy? Especially considing his parent company owns DTV.

Several reports have it that when Alcatel merged with Lucent they fired all of the good U.S. engineers. Now Alcatel can't build the U-Verse systems to meet spec. The end result is that AT&T is shopping for a replacement for video transport via U-Verse.
