Will be 'showcase' market for new DOCSIS 3.0 service
08:54AM Friday Nov 27 2009 by Karl Bode
Tipped by drslash See Profile
Earlier this month Mediacom hinted that their implementation of faster DOCSIS 3.0 technology would involve both 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps tiers, and would be arriving sometime in December. According to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, Waterloo will be a "showcase" for their faster speeds, which will launch before the end of December. While the speeds are set at 50/5 Mbps and 105/10 Mbps, the company says they're still trying to determine what they'll charge for the "high end" product. Mediacom hopes to have about 25% of their network upgraded to the faster speeds by the end of the year, and has an additional 25% of their network DOCSIS 3.0 headend-capable for expanded launches in 2010.

oooo lala

I thought DOCSIS 3 was supposed to even out the DL/UL ratio. Why do they still insist on making upload 1/10th the download speed?

Re: oooo lala

Still don't believe they've mastered upstream channel bonding, though that should be coming shortly...Even then, I don't think it will fully even out UL/DL ratio....

Actually, D3 makes the DL/UL ratio worse, at least until channel bonding starts working.

I'm glad to see Mediacom is catching up with the big players

I can't wait for Mediacom to bring those speeds to my town. It usually takes a good year or two though for upgrades to make it this far into the sticks.

I'd take it for $80 per month, though I'd rather have 20/5 for $70...and I'm in college!

Hmmmm....

Waterloo, Iowa? Any reason why they get to be the showcase for their DOCSIS 3.0 tech? There are other, bigger markets they could have chosen. Like, uh, mine.

Yes, Cedar Falls, right next to Waterloo, has a municipal utility that provides cable TV and cable-based Internet service.

Re: Hmmmm....

And there have been several abortive attempts to copy Cedar Falls in Waterloo. This is a preemptive strike.

It is ALL about competition. Just like Cox launched its first 50/5 "ultimate" tier in Lafayette, La where muni fiber LUS is serving up 50/50...and Cox offered it outside of the city as well where there are mutterings about inviting LUS in...

No coincidences here.

Waterloo IA?

Not exactly a big metropolis is it? How about testing in a decent sized city for a change?

Because there is generally a diverse selection of providers that you can take your pick from, being in LA

Fewer people affected when the whole system blows up during testing.

If everything seems to be going well, you've obviously overlooked something.
