Last week Google announced they'll pony up $4.6 billion at the upcoming 700Mhz spectrum auction if the FCC enacts broad open access guidelines for the spectrum, including open access to competitors. Press coverage calls this "bold" and "risky," while the digerati insist Google is putting their chips on the table, their money where their mouth is, or some poker metaphor variation thereof.

But wait: is promising to invest billions contingent on the FCC enacting policies everyone knows they'll never enact really that bold? It's kind of like promising to quit smoking once Paris Hilton writes her first Grammy-winning rock album. Anyone who thinks Kevin Martin is going to implement Google's suggestions to the letter and truly open up any broadband network on this planet -- hasn't been watching Kevin Martin.

Martin's plan may contain some Carterfone principles, but true open-access won't be included. You can also be sure AT&T & Verizon lobbyists have succeeded in forging ample legal loopholes to any new requirements that won't be apparent (or covered by the press) until the time comes to enforce them. That said, what would really be impressive is if the FCC rejects Google and they invest billions in broadband competition anyway.

For those confused about how this industry works, it's really quite complicated: if the incumbent phone operators want the spectrum they will get it. Once they have it, they will do whatever they want with it. During this process the FCC will smile frequently and occasionally nod.

What service? Maybe you missed the thrust of the news item - the service doesn't exist and is very likely to never exist(at least with Google involvement). So it would be pretty hard to provide details, wouldn't it?

Re: How Fast Would This Be? Anyone Know?

Exactly. This isn't about a service at all, but about the ability to use the frequency. Maybe the auction winner will use it to create a whole new wireless network technology (802.11z!), or maybe they will start their own cell company, with a signal that will much better penetrate walls and trees and stuff.

Google is after trying to create a free wimax network. Google is also going to put out a stripped down OS to go with it. The idea being a free high speed network that locks you into using Google and Google tools. $$$$$$$$$ for Google if they pull it off. Google has been buying up a lot of dark fiber claiming it's for internal use, I don't think it's for internal use it's just Google trying to keep the phone companies at bay.

Free and corporation dont go well together.
If it was a private company, then maybe that would be possible.
It's more likely that google is setting the price high for the spectrum for the actual bidders, so the government can get more money.
Google has a lot of x-govt workers in management and a bit of good graces with lawmakers would help them.

I am sure you can google around (no pun intended) and find out about some of the devices being tested on the new 700mzh freqs.

If we are talking about a 1 channel device, I think the speed would be pretty limited, just look back at the old 900mzh wireless gear we had before the newer 2.4 stuff started to come out.

I don't know how much room they will be giving to devices, but one could in-vision something like the new MIMO or -N- gear being used in the 700mzh range, to have more "bandwidth" and thus speed available.

Just my two cents

hrmm...

the speed isn't what's cool about the frequency ... its that it goes throw walls and stuff as if your using a rabbit

Honestly

It would be cool if Google made an offer for all terrestrial based phone lines in the country and leased it out to any competitor.

That would be the ultimate extension of the free market and would be our best chance of finally seeing an explosion of broadband providers nationwide.

Dialup penetration was huge and even for rural folks. Who's to say that isp's would not if given the chance jump to help install equipment and serve the under-served across this nation.

Re: Honestly

Well Verizon and AT&T both have around $200B each in fixed assets, and Quest has another $50B. So that's $450B in fixed assets mostly made up of their networks. That's only just under 3 times the market cap of google, so if you can bid their stock up to $1,500 a share I'm sure the telco's would pounce on those %50 growth rates!

Maybe KKR could organize an LBO? Oh.. too late.

@verizon.net

Maybe...

this means Google will become a Wimax ISP, with a Wimax iphone with Google/Apple as the ISP...

Re: Proposal....

Agreed.

Not enough submissions on aardvarks I guess. AOL just isn't doing enough to get mocked I reckon.

I gave up submitting news material years ago. DSLR wants to be like the Inquirer, 25% news, 75% speculation, opinion or other ponderings.

Occasionally they get one on the nickel and it goes national.
