First, I don't like the managers that think waving "You should be glad you have a job" is an excuse to get more work out of you.
And then there are those that are out of work, collecting severance, welfare, unemployment, etc, and working under the table...that could be looking for work. (I trust they are).
Finally, there are those that have jobs and SHOULD have been let go along time ago. The word is: apathetic (useless).
There. I vented. Happy Friday! have a good weekend and see you next week...

The company I work for loves to play both ends of the field.
When the economy is booming, and profits are up, they complain that it's to find to find qualified candidates and workers and so they have to pay more to attract new hires and as a result the cost of labor is higher THEREFORE they just cannot justify giving out any raises due to the need to control costs. Inflation be damned, forget cost of living... Sound familiar anyone?
Then when the economy tanks, and because of our business, profits are still up, they flip the script.
They start in with the "You're so lucky to work for us." They mention other companies laying off, closing down, etc etc and talk about how hard it is to get a job right now and isn't it great you have one with such a good company.... and then they go on to explain again why they're be no raises and how the new compensation plan (that cuts bonuses or pay overall) is really so great or awesome because it's more "fair" or because it could create more "potential" income (if goals are met that can't be met due to the continuous cutbacks in workers and assistance.)
These guys really don't understand morale. They talk about it a lot, but they really don't believe that many of their employees would leave if they didn't have them over a barrel. They always are tooting their horns pointing to their latest position of Forbes list or crowing about increasing profits despite the economy, but then a week later they talk about cut this, cut that, no raises, bonus adjustments and the like. Don't they realize this just kills morale? I think they believe we're stupid and that we don't understand what they are doing to us.

This week I did nothing job wise. I have been on unemployment since June, and it just renewed (in PA I just file another claim and it continues for another 26 weeks). Unemployment (full benefits) are ok, they pay the bills, but I hate not working. It drives me nuts! I have been searching every week since I was let go and have only had a few interviews. I have a good 10+ years in network engineering, a well laid out resume (even paid for the critique and re-writing, which is pointless in my opinion so nobody else go for that one), and just either see jobs that pay crap or never get interviews.
I have a family, I am not in foreclosure or late on anything, pay my car payments, etc. The good part is I get valuable time with my family, minus the stuff that costs money like vacations and going "out" with the family. I have cut back just a little on cell phone extras and DirecTV package, but nothing serious.
So I am wondering, how many people in IT are really in this position? I mean systems administration, network engineering, those type of jobs? What keeps you from going nuts? Do you feel the economy will pick up this year?
I am not going to get any "bailouts" because I am not losing my home. I am not going to switch careers, what is the point if there are millions that have more training in those other fields. My wife understands, but I think she is even starting to wonder if it is the economy or me. I have a tough time thinking that the economy really is to blame for me not getting a job, after this long it is really not believable!
Pain in the ass every week searching and fighting for jobs I never get. You just want to say #$ck it and give up. Sit on my ass and do nothing. Sit on my porch and drink beer all day and wait for the economy to be "fixed".... no.
I know others are in the same boat, but really, is it this bad? It is just getting to the point where it is shocking to me. You begin to second and third guess your tactics and skills.

Forthcoming legislation would wrest cybersecurity responsibilities from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and transfer them to the White House...
...proposal from senators Jay Rockefeller (D-W.V.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) that would create an Office of the National Cybersecurity Advisor, part of the Executive Office of the President. That office would receive the power to disconnect, if it believes they're at risk of a cyber-attack, "critical" computer networks from the Internet.
White House National Cybersecurity Advisor in charge of coordinating cyber efforts within the intelligence community and within civilian agencies, as well as coordinating the public sector's cooperation with the private sector. The advisor would have the authority to disconnect from the Internet any federal infrastructure networks-- or other networks deemed to be "critical"--if found to be at risk of a cyberattack.
The bill may also subject both government and private sector networks to cybersecurity standards established by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. It may also provide for a professional licensing and certification program for cybersecurity professionals. 2 things:
1. This gets the gov't in to managing and regulating the internet big time.
2. The White House would have the authority to disconnect the American people from the internet at large IF they deem it necessary. Question is open to how this could be abused for political purposes.

I'll be paying far more attention whole biking from now on, especially a 4 am!
So anyways, i'm still 110% satisfied with my FIOS. I'm going to see if i can switch my TV to VZ as well, as they have an offer for 6 months free of HD DVR box and 1 year free premium channels.
