Re: Friday

What is it that makes grilled food so good? I mean you can cook a burger inside on a stove and it is good, but when you take one off a gas grill it is much better, why? And don't even get me started on if it is a charcoal grill the smoke just gives it such a great taste. But I think smoked pork butt or brisket is my favorite. That smoker was the best $15 we ver spent.

I'm with you. I grew up on charcoal all of my life. We didn't really grill at home too much, but more when we went on vacation. So, that's what I mean about charcoal "all my life". In the last 5 years, I've been using propane, and my intent now is to grill year-round. Propane makes that so easy and convenient. However, nothing can replace the taste of food from a charcoal grill--I plan on picking one up one of these days as well.

Hope so---as soon as this god awful May weather improves. Got a buddy from work coming over on Sunday to clean my gutters---saw water falling directly downward from them this AM. Going to cook him some steak and feed him a 6 pack or two---after the roof stuff is done.

Yeah water falling form them directly just means they need a bad cleaning. I do mine every year and once they open up it is much better for the property.
No beer before he goes up on the roof.

Yeah, when I saw it this AM, I was like "shit". I hate going on the roof. I'd go on my lower roof above the garage, but I'm not going all the way up top. So, I'll flip him some $, and make him lunch and call it a day.

Yeah I told him already, no beer or steak until he's done. He's a younger guy (26). Love's a party, as do I, but this is serious shit, and I take it seriously. I don't need him falling off my roof, and I doubt he'd like it too much either.

Somebody acquired 2 of my kids identities.

My auto insurance company notified me that my 2 oldest kids now have state drivers licenses. I have the Lic#'s but not the rest of the record yet. It's played sudden heck with my auto policy.

Neither son has ever applied for a license or permit.

The state License Fraud unit is looking into it. I'm getting ready to pull credit reports on them.

A friend of mine works with Identity Theft Shield. He's having them look into it as well.

As if that weren't enough, the water company shortened my billing cycle without informing me which resulted in my water being turned off until the afternoon.

Those weren't my only challenges since waking up.

I've been having a day.

These two are 16 and 18. I'll probably remain the 18 year old's legal guardian for another year or two, so it's still my jurisdiction.

Our family's pretty tight; it'd be very unlikely they'd have licenses or permits without my knowledge.

Oh yeah, I wasn't suggesting they pulled the wool over your eyes. Identity theft is a serious issue. I hope you get it resolved.

It happened to my dad once--took about 5 years and tons of man hours of labor to straighten out bullshit. Hope it's better for you. Good luck!

I'd certainly need his permission; he'd give it willingly.
He has something that might be akin to a very mild form of Asperger Syndrome; with reading/writing well below grade level and math way above.
It's generally agreed that an additional year at at home, as a minor, would greatly benefit him.

Guess that "no smiling to prevent fraud" policy and "proof of legal presence" requirement is working great, huh?

I just got a demand from DMV to prove insurance coverage on a car we've owned and had registered for two years.

Maybe this heat is affecting them down in Richmond.

Sorry to hear about your troubles...hope everything works out OK for you.

Yep. That sounds like Virginia.
State Motto:Augeo Civitas Usura Populus

Virginia was among the first to sign onto the Non-Resident Violator Compact of 1977.
That nifty piece of legislation
was designed to insure
that any traffic mistakes you made in one state,
would continue to penalize you, wherever you went.

Manassas (Prince Cole Apts) was the last place I lived before I moved to Florida.
It taught me what John and Lorena Bobbitt's world must have been like.

Well, I'm pretty sure most companies the deal with secret government clearances have the same neutral expression policy. In the case of Virginia their protections won't work on a new driver but, assuming the software works, it'll work on someone who has had a license for a while.

I respect that. I'm more of the kind of guy that likes to take my FXDX on the back roads and enjoy the countryside. Maybe find a nice lady friend to enjoy the ride and grab a few beers.

But anyone that has the balls the throw their leg over 2 wheels and head out amongst the cage drivers and make a go of it is OK in my book. Not everyone is cut out to take a bike into traffic in this day and age.

Awesome vid. I have no plans of going that fast in the near future...

45MPH was enough for me to be slammed into a coma for 6 days.
35MPH was enough to shatter my right femur.

If I were able to ride, I would have no problem opening up *ANY* machine on a few selected California desolate roads.

But - until you have done 115+ down a puddle ridden gravel road, you haven't gone fast.

Damn man, you've been beat up like Rocky Balboa.

I've had my '99 Mustang GT up to 140 MPH, but the fastest thing I've ever been in control of myself is a Piper Cherokee Six.

I can tell you a modern police Crown Victoria with roof mounted light bar tops out at 135 MPH. From personal experience of course.

You haven't lived until you've been in a multi state high speed chase, with air support.

We did get the sucker too. He was wanted for 2 armed robberies. He won't be starting any chases for a while...

have ya'll ever seen the video about the guy who was trying to break 200 mph, and ended up crashing at about 180? he didn't die, and did even break one bone! he made a second attempt, crashed at around the same speed and didn't die, but broke like virtually everything

just not dieing from either crashes is incredible, but not breaking anything on the first one is just one in 20 billion or something.. beyond a miracle!

A new Internet scam.

The latest scam on-line stores are pulling is offering very competitive prices for merchandise, but when the total is calculated you will find that in some cases shipping and handling UPS Ground is more than 50% of the cost of the merchandise for shipping an order weighing two pounds.

Several weeks ago I tried to purchase some cables from an on-line store only to find out that it was going to cost about $45.00 to ship an $80.00 order via UPS Ground. I purchased the merchandise from another vendor where the cost for shipping and handling was only $12.00 to ship the 2 Pound order.

I just tried to purchase some additional handsets for a cordless phone system. The cost of the handsets were $18.00 each. I was going to order 6 for a total cost of $108.00. The cost the vendor quoted for shipping one handset was $7.50, the cost for shipping 6 handsets was $45.00. Another vendor charges $8.00 to ship one handset and $0.75 for each additional handset via UPS Ground. Unfortunately the dealer offering to ship the handsets I need for a reasonable cost does not yet stock the handsets I need.

Beer Tasting at Beer Distributors in NY

I've been drinking beer since I was about 19. When I was young and in college, I drank whatever got me the most for $5. Most of the time this meant a 12-pack of Natural Light/Natural Ice or Milwaukee's Best/Ice ("The Beast"). As time went on, I began to consume less of the bad beers, and a comfortable mix of the good stuff. I distinctly remember trying Samuel Smiths, New Castle, & Guinness Draught for the first time.

I spent most of my young-man days in Delaware, and they have a fine brew company down there called Dogfish. If you're in the area, or not in the area but find Dogfish around, give it a try.

At any rate, I recently moved to an area about 20 minutes away from where I had been living in NY for the past 30 years. I found this great beer distributor---in NY, beer is sold many places (7/11, supermarkets, etc.), but a much better variety of beers can be found at a local beer distributor. Beer distributors essentially sell beer, lotto, ice, and cases of water/snapple/etc.

Recently, I think something changed in NY law where these distributors could get temporary serving licenses. This then enabled local (and some not-so-local) breweries to come up and give free tastings of their offerings. It's only been a few weeks since I've seen this, but every Friday this place about 15 minutes from me has tastings from 4p-8pm. They had Sam Adams a few weeks ago, Dogfish 2 weeks ago, and tonight they had Stone Brewing Company. They are a great brewery out of San Diego, who makes fantastic stuff. I had forgotten how good their IPA and Pale Ale were, and after the tasting, I picked up a six pack of each.

Anyway, it's just such a cool thing if you like beer to have this. I'm shocked that NY allows this--NY sucks for many things (don't even get me started). When I was in college in Delaware, you couldn't even walk into a "package store" if you were under 21. If you opened a beer in there, forget it. You'd be thrown out. Now, here I am, back in NY, legally drinking beer inside a beer store. Go figure!

Any Dave Matthews Band Fans in the House?

If you are a fan and aren't aware of it already, or if you aren't a fan but a curious spectator, the Dave Matthews Band will be on Sirius Ch 17 and XM Ch 56 from 6/1 through 6/7. Each of those nights at 9PM, they will play a different pre-recorded show. (DMB encourages audience recording and trading of their shows. See sites like The Dreaming Tree for more information on that.

In addition, on 6/1/09 DMB will broadcast a live show from the Beacon Theater in NYC. Catch it on Hulu, or if you prefer TV, it'll be on The Fuse channel who will also broadcast it live.

I've been following these guys since ~1992 from Charlottsville, VA all the way to their biggest stadiums. I had nice "moment" with myself when I saw them a few years ago at MSG playing to a packed house, when in 1993 I saw them play at a 200 person bar in a small town called Newark, DE. Anyway, even if you don't know them, or think you don't like them but you have nothing to do on a Monday night, why not tune in.

Got a start on the weekend

Came home from work and cut the front and west side jungle, ditch included. It's been three weeks since the last time it was dry enough to mangle the weeds without them looking like crap piles. Now it's time for beer, guitar hero, and trying to find a GH custom torrent.
Tomorrow, it's going to be more than 80 degrees. That means get up early, like eight, cut the backyard, the other drainage ditch, go help a friend move a washer and dryer, come home, drink beer, play more guitar hero (my youngest is eight, she's getting better and I need to keep up with her), kick some spammers off the Rams board, drink more beer, cauterize an animal sacrifice on the grill, and maybe weedeat.
Sunday? Like God intended - a day of rest. And maybe fishing. And beer. Maybe a lot of beer.

Sounds like a nice weekend is coming.

Obama creates cybersecurity czar job - do you feel safer?

President Obama announced Friday he is creating the post of cyber security coordinator to oversee "a new comprehensive approach to securing America's digital infrastructure."

The czar will report to both the national security adviser and the head of the National Economic Council, sources familiar with Obama's plan said.

In addition, the White House was to release a 40-page report that sets broad goals for combating cyber intrusions, but does not spell out in detail how to do so, said the sources, who would not agree to be identified because the report had not been released.

The president said he will personally select the person who takes on that post and "will depend on this official" in all matters related to online security.

Hulu Desktop

Integrated Hulu Desktop with my Media Center PC tonight and I'm able to launch and control it all from my remote. I've been watching a few Firefly episodes while testing it. So far it's been about 2 months using Netflix, Hulu, and OTA Digital HDTV ... and it hasn't been too bad.

The cable companies have a reason to be worried, VERY worried.

New rules kick in Monday for border btw Canada & US

I wonder if this will seriously slow things down Monday at major border crossings?

Tough new border regulations come into effect Monday, requiring anyone entering the U.S. to carry a passport or equivalent identification.

Starting June 1, both Canadian citizens and U.S. citizens returning home will need proper identification to cross the border into the United States.

"For a traveller what that means is we can no longer can take an oral declaration. We can no longer take a driver's licence for identification," said Chief Thomas Schreiber with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Travellers will need either a passport, a NEXUS card or an enhanced driver's licence, also known as an EDL.
"Basically this is something that works very similar to your driver's licence [but] in addition to being a driver's licence it also confirms your Canadian citizenship."

"Neither the Canadian or American border authorities will be turning people away on June the 1st," he said. "I think what they'll be doing is handing out information at the border for anyone who doesn't have the correct new required documentation."

An estimated 70 per cent of Americans don't hold passports, according to U.S. State Department figures for 2008.

That's raised concerns that those Americans won't bother visiting Canada, or entertain doing business north of the border, if they're now required to dole out the cash and endure the bureaucratic hassle of getting one.

Video of Bush getting his watch stolen

@ 4 seconds into it, 2 hands are clasped onto his wrist. About 10 seconds later we see his wrist again, sans watch.

I saw him on the Chris Isaak show on the Biography channel a few weeks ago. It's definitely an album worth buying, IMO. I've only broken my boycott against buying RIAA music twice; this would be a third time.

Military Industrial Complex hiring cyber ninjas

The government’s urgent push into cyberwarfare has set off a rush among the biggest military companies for billions of dollars in new defense contracts.

Nearly all of the largest military companies — including Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Raytheon — have major cyber contracts with the military and intelligence agencies.

They have been buying smaller firms, financing academic research and running advertisements for “cyberninjas” at a time when other industries are shedding workers.

The young engineers represent the new face of a war that President Obama described Friday as “one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation.”

Air Force plans this year to award the first publicly announced contract for developing tools to break into enemy computers. The companies are also teaming up to build a National Cyber Range, a model of the Internet for testing advanced techniques.

Mr. Harding estimates that there are now 3,000 to 5,000 information operations specialists in the military and 50,000 to 70,000 soldiers involved in general computer operations. Adding specialists in electronic warfare, deception and other areas could bring the total number of information operations personnel to as many as 88,700, he said.
New job opportunities for hackers in the military and for defense contractors.

So... iHave my own iPhone now....

Last weekend i was testing my woman's iPhone, just to get a feel for it & learn how to use it 100% so i could help her with any questions & just make sure it all checked out properly.

I was more than satisfied with the battery life and all the different features.

That was her brand new iPhone. I got a refurb 8 gig.

So, my iPhone.... What do i think of it, how do i feel about its performance, you must be wondering. Well, aside from a dead AC adapter (which is likely caused by the previous user & why the phone has no wear on it, only the adapter does) that i'm right now on the phone getting replaced, i have 6 pages of apps on the phone, got us to a destination to a pretty unfamiliar area with location services, and helped locate a frozen dessert establishment, and allowed me to see where we were in a very old town where my family has lots of history on a random nostalgia road trip, and allowed me to see what roads i passed near or under on a train trip.

It also allowed me for the first time to look up information right when i thought of it, vs sometimes hours later if i've even remembered it.

Battery life is easily managed by clicking the sleep button, turning 3G, wifi & location & push services on/off as needed no hassle at all in that.

Aside from a few websites that require flash to do stuff, and a few that wont let iphone browse a full version of the site, internet browsing is 2 thumbs up.

Music management is easy, good sound quality, i took a 5 mile walk from in town to my house with music playing on the speaker (didnt bring phones with), listened 90% of the way till i came to a loud road that overwhelmed the speaker's output (no biggie, the road noise is audible clearly from the opposite part of the section of my house that faces the same road, so even headphones don't really help sometimes). The clicker on the 'phones works well for both answering calls and stop/pause/play control.

E-mail, SMS, and IM work flawlessly and smoothly, i've used both yahoo messenger, aim, and the default SMS software to talk to people on my phone's contact list and the respective buddy lists. Typing is easy, WAY faster than on my razr.

Visual voicemail is not available from about 2:30 to 3 am, but otherwise it works well and is very, very useful, it presents each message as a timed recording so i can skip through it or rewind as need be, it tells me how long the messages are before i listen to them, so i can tell the difference between an actually message, and a call meant to try to reach me, but maybe accidently ran long & hit the voicemail beep unintentionally.

Using the phone part, for me personally is more "woah i can call people too with this thing?!?" vs "oh it has more features than just phone stuff". It's all tightly integrated, anything that could be a phone number is presented in blue, and all one needs to do to dial is touch it & it asks if you wish to call etc etc. It has an audio quality on par with land line phones, which is more than i can say for any other mobile i've used before. Might be wondering 3G vs EDGE, more on that next. Calls are easily handled by both speaker/mic on phone & the included 'phones with the good audio quality all around. Bluetooth calls are going to be the same quality outgoing as they were before, however incoming audio from a bluetooth device will be improved due to the overall audio quality of the stuff built into the phone.

As for EDGE vs 3G on data & calls, there is a moment where the phone disconnects from the network, you must end calls before switching, however internet & location stuff isnt affected. The audio quality is about the same, but 3G gets more data in per sec & also uses about 10% more battery or more depending on signal strength.

Wifi works beautifully & saves hugely on battery. I often turn it on airplane mode & connect on yahoo/aim via wifi. When i leave the house i turn wifi off & have it on EDGE unless i want fast stuff like app store.

The unlimited data plan is totally justified, because i can't see att keeping up with demand without a high level of network availability, meaning tower repairs, new towers, newly 3G capable towers etc. Justified yes, but do i wish it was 20 & not 30? Yes.

We have family plan 550 with 2 iPhones (2 iPhone data plans), unlimited family plan text. Applecare to come soon, as well as those battery pack cases to enable us to use 3G more often & keep the screen on playing games for longer periods of time.

So far i'm satisfied.

Re: A propos of nothing...

Aye, nothing like that, eh? Bikes are bad, but that Hornet, well that is the ultimate, isn't it? Three minutes and thirty seconds from take off to landing and all of that at 600 to 1000 knots.

He went from 50' AGL to 30000 feet AGL and flew about fifty miles in that short little video, besides taking off and landing on an Aircraft carrier...

... and the bike boy thinks he is a bad ass ...
