The Pre's display has a built-in accelerometer so the screen orientation will automatically change from portrait to landscape mode when viewing photos, videos, and Web pages. The accelerometer is fast and changes pages without any lag. There's also a proximity sensor, which will automatically turn off the display when you lift the smartphone to your ear for a phone call. I know you just bought an iphone »So... iHave my own iPhone now.... . But please don't turn this in to an iPhone vs Pre religious war. The iPhone is a good smartphone. | If you haven't done so already, check out signal quality from the carriers associated with your phones.
I've had Verizon, AT&T and Sprint within the last year. Of the 3, Sprint was the only one that gave me a usable signal at the 5 or 6 locations I visit most. All of them gave me good 3G service in most locations, just not at my most visited locations.
18 months ago I was set to get a blackberry until I got a hold of a pearl and a world edition and tried to type on both of them. That was the end of BBs for me. I support them for companies but I couldn't own one.
I finally settled on an AT&T Tilt. I liked it and their service. I only switched over to a Sprint Touch Pro, just because my company changed wireless providers.
It turned out to be a good move. My Touch Pro is terrific (once I added a cooked rom) and the Sprint service is much better in what had traditionally been problem spots.
More evidence that YMMV.

NV Thanks for info. I have a Kindle, which uses Sprint's network, and I find that signal strength has been good in all the areas I frequent most often. A friend has an AT&T phone and his has been good also. But coverage is definitely a key part of the evaluation. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

| Re: Going to check out Palm Pre in person tomorrow said by tubbynet :how is the microphone for the voice calls? i've noticed a bad trend with a lot of the "fullscreen" touchscreen phones lately (storm, iphone, even some of the lg's from verizon) that they tend to sound watery or pick up a lot of background noise (and i've tried from several of my phones that have never had that issue when calling traditional "flip" style handsets). while i am no longer with sprint (workphone was moved to att), i'm curious to see if this was just an isolated incident to the few people that i call on a regular basis or if it is something larger... q. When I tried it out in the store I only called 1 person. They said it sounded OK to them. But that isn't a real test. You would have to get comments from someone who actually bought one. I am waiting until reviews are in on new iPhone and the new iPhone OS 3.0 before I make up my mind on the Pre or the iPhone. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page | |

But that isn't a real test understood. some co-workers have iphones (some edge-only, some 3g), my brother in law has a blackberry storm and my wife has the lg dare from verizon. all three of those phones sound echo-y and pick up a lot of ambient noise. i thought it could have been something with the design the phone has to fit... i as well am waiting for the iphone 3.0 launch. if its good enough, i may buy the phone outright and replace my blackjack ii with it, since we use a web-based content hosting solution for a lot of our internal documentation and said portal can be accessed using the iphone. appreciate the input... q. Also, I use a bluetooth headset with my current Verizon LG phone(not a smartphone) and plan on using that headset with either the Pre or iPhone. So the builtin microphone probably won't be a determining factor for me. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

| Take OECD broadband numbers with a grain of salt
»tech.yahoo.com/news/pcworld/2009···itmatter
Statistics that show the U.S. behind many other countries in broadband deployment don't tell the whole story and may not be as important as some critics suggest, a group of broadband experts said Friday.
OECD statistics might give a better picture if they reflected broadband adoption for households, because families often share a connection and the OECD numbers have largely ignored broadband on smartphones and other wireless devices, said panelists at a broadband forum.
David Gross, former coordinator of international communications and information policy at the U.S Department of State called the OECD statistics "deeply flawed," but also acknowledged that the organization is working to improve its broadband reports.
The U.S. leads the world in broadband to schools, he said, and it's the only country now deploying fiber-based broadband outside urban areas. Part of the problem in the U.S., however, is with demand. Of 21 OECD countries with statistics available, the U.S. ranks 11th in PC ownership, Atkinson said, and without PCs, people aren't going to get wired broadband.
One largely ignored segment of broadband providers, both by OECD and by people who complain about not enough competition, are wireless providers, said Christopher Guttman-McCabe, vice president of regulatory affairs at CTIA. The number of U.S. subscribers with broadband access on their smartphones and other devices has grown from 3 million in 2006 to 73 million in 2008, he said. "I do think broadband to the home is being rapidly overtaken by broadband to the person," he said. The above info is for those who think the OECD numbers are gospel and actually reflect where the US is concerning broadband. -- My BLOG .. .. Internet News .. .. My Web Page

| Ubuntu! Think I might sit down and learn all the features of Ubuntu 9.04. I gotta say Ubuntu is great, and especially fast. I run it off my Compaq Presario R3000, that's hard drive got fried. Popped a new 160gb drive, and was up and running ubuntu in no-time! Recognizes all my drivers, and I had my wireless card working with a couple command prompts. I just want to explore all the features that ubuntu has, I tried to already... but there's too many! Anybody else here run ubuntu? | |

| consumer vs customer. Anyone else find it insulting to be called consumer vs a customer? In the technical explanation of an economy, local regional national etc, yes i am a consumer, but a company calling me its consumer is just insulting. i'm a guest, a client, a patron, an end user, a customer.
Also, all this talk of palm pre is getting me kinda nauseated. It's just some stupid slider phone, it can't even do landscape mode.

| Finally gratification! Been going nuts trying to remember a song I used to like, but somehow lost it from my collection and couldn't remember the name, but did remember it was on a friend's project-playlist. But since Myspace was gracious enough to remove the players from their site, it made it a REAL pain in the ass to find the playlist in question. Thanks myspace, couldn't discover artists without you.
