| Is it just me or..... Does like every store when you go to check out ask if you have a reward card or a store credit card? I mean I can understand the reward card, like with bestbuy where you get money back or gamestop where you get 10% off used games, but why all the credit cards? Isn't living on credit part of what got us to where we are? | |

| Living on "credit" is actually pretty nice. See, they aren't "credit" cards. Oh, the banks may call them that, but I never got credit anywhere I used them. Only time I get credit is when I return something that has no refund policy and the store gives me store credit instead. Now they OWE ME money, that's "credit"! Let's quit playing into the hands of banks and call them what they really are: "CHARGE Cards" | |

| AT&T Wireless Broadband Rationing Bandwidth? I have an application that requires pretty much 24/7 connection to the Internet VIA cellular broadband. AT&T deployments VIA the Mercury USB radio have pretty much been falling on their face. Not a great deal of bandwidth but requires a stable connection. Our application does a warm reboot in the early morning hours, something that seems to fix our primary carrier's connection (Sprint) should it have problems (a few). My thought's are that since it is a warm reboot and the USB radio does not power off that the pipe to our radio is shut off since it appears that the IP addy does not change? Do a search at DSL Reports' of AT&T's wireless drought and that makes sense to me. I am going to do more testing this weekend on my laptop to try and figure out what the heck is going on. Any of you genius' here have an answer? | |

| Walter Cronkite changed everything-Then he changed it again. Cronkite brought a level of respectability into television journalism, that didn't exist before. His reports were the yardstick by which integrity was measured. Americans knew their world in a way they never had before. In this, he was a great man.
But somewhere in the late 60's Cronkite traded all that for an ideology. He had once been the authoritative voice of fact and information. He abandoned that to became part of the story; one more member of the loud and powerful chorus. He had converted.
Cronkite worked to convert America to his ideology. He helped condition America to accept the blurring of journalism and editorializing. America continued to believe him and accordingly lowered our standards for news.
The downward slope eventually led to our present day news delivery, that is largely divided between infotainment and partisan-centric news-crafting. Journalism has become so difficult to find in the media that I'm not sure most Americans could recognize it.
Cronkite should still be revered. His memory should be tied to the golden age of television news that he ushered in. I think his damage should be remembered, but not tied to him. We need our heroes.
As much as anyone, Cronkite reminds me of Martin Luther. Luther was a courageous man, who stood alone when he empowered common people through knowledge.
But once Luther's ideas no longer needed his momentum he degenerated into the common group-think of his generation. Luther spent all those remaining decades viciously persecuting Jews, with the focus of eradicating Judaism. It was a savage twisting of the peaceful and powerful message he once brought to the masses. We're sadly forced to separate Luther's actions, to properly revere his work.
Rest in Peace Mr. Cronkite. May your greatness inspire our wisest intentions.

| Re: breaking news from Oscar Meyer It's not the first time a Weinermobile has had navigational problems. You might remember this one.
This one had left a party event at Syracuse University and was heading south on U.S. 15 to make their next appointment at Penn State.
Shortly after noon, however, an icy patch of roadway chilled the bun and sent the giant wiener into the snowbank. Damage was slight and all that was needed was a quick tow out of the ditch and they were on their way.
The Elmira Star-Gazette has the full story. The money-quote from the article comes from the tow truck driver when he says, Ive pulled out a lot of vehicles, he said. But thats the first wiener Ive ever pulled out.
It spawned at least one ambulance-chaser: »www.elmirainjury.com/law-blog-po···%2016:06
You may have read recently that the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile was involved in an accident. Many people might wonder whether or not such a vehicle falls within the same category as the family sedan. In New York, it does. It is still a motor vehicle as defined by law. As such, any injured passengers would be entitled to no-fault benefits for medical expenses, lost wages, etc... Provided their injuries meet the threshold for a serious injury pursuant to the Insurance Law, they would also be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering. In addition, if the driver or any of the passengers were working at the time, they might also be entitled to claim Workers Compensation benefits.
You may call for a telephone consultation by dialing 1-800-TALK-LAW (1-800-825-5529) or (607) 732-4973. -- this is serious | |

1 edit | "Secret questions" and proving identity Today I had to call Washington Mutual (now Chase). They began asking multiple-choice questions (previous addresses, professional certifications, etc.) to prove my identity.
I thought this was weird because I selected some "secret questions" and answers when I opened my account.
They said their former method is insecure. Now they use a service called VerID which scans public-records databases, and tells the subscribing company the questions to ask.
They're right that "secret questions" are insecure. They're *facts*, and solicited by multiple companies. Hardly "secret." I always provide fictitious answers, and write them down so I can refer to them when needed.
But, this public records thing is problematic too. Ten years ago my credit report was cross-linked to someone in New Mexico. I realized I was screwed when the WaMu help-desk person asked "which of the following Albuquerque addresses did you live at in 1999?"
I spent 30 minutes on the phone explaining things to a senior manager. They finally helped me based on *no* authentication of my identity.
What a mess.
