Have a good One!

Something is off the tip of my toung,
ya know that song that starts out "I want my antie" or something like that, it repeats that a couple times, and then has a awesome guitar solo? I totally forgot the name of that song! It's been bugging me all day at work!

Thanks in advance, have a good weekend

Win 7 upgrade

Upgrading to Win 7 this weekend?

Download the VMware Converter Standalone Cient, and download the VMWare Player as well. Create a VM of your pre upgrade PC with the Sandalone Converter. You can run this VM you create with the Standalone Converter using the VMWare Player.

Better yet take an image of it with Acronis. It's free if you have an internal Seagate drive (You should have bought a Seagate, huh?). You can run the .TIB image with VMWare player or convert the .TIB image file with the Standalone Converter into a WMWare VM.

Now you can have your old PC and new one too. Maybe there is a better way to do this?

BBQ Season Over

Had my last BBQ meal of the season on the deck last night.
Anything after yesterday will probably be eaten indoors.

It is a bummer, but the grill keeps going regardless of outside temperature. Yes, we have to eat inside, but here is my rationale...

October is over.

We have to get through November, but by the time it's Thanksgiving, it'll be Christmas before you know it, and then New Year a week later. That takes care of November and December.

January is a bitch--have to get through that one on your own.

February is a shorter month, and MN can be sneaky and she can stick a 70 degree day in on you at the end of the month. After January, February will be over quickly.

March can go either way, but 3/21 is Spring, and before long, it'll be outside time again.

That's how I see it because I hate the cold.

True but it is so much nicer to eat outside communing with nature.
I think this is the last year for my present Grill (purchased in 2003 at H Depot). I'll keep this one going but it will need a new burner unit next season and the bar that holds the tank is corroded. While I am very handy for repairs etc. it is not worth it for what you can now buy a new Stainless Grill.

Something to look forward to for the new season.

Re: BBQ Season Over

There ya go. A new grill is always nice.

If I may ask, I bought a new Weber propane grill in March - my first propane grill. It's always covered when not in use, and I think only twice rain hit it directly. I think I paid about $650 for it.

All things remaining equal, how long can I expect it to last? I've had other Weber grills before, but they were the $125 charcoal grills which I never really took care of.

Re: BBQ Season Over

If you take care (cover it etc) the exterior will last a good 10 years (especially stainless). It is the heat that ultimately melts the burner units which are modular and easily replaceable. The more you use it, the sooner the burner needs replacement.
The cheaper the grill, the quicker the burners "melt".
My grill in 2003 was/is a Charbroil (Weber was not that big in gas grills then) and is not stainless and it looks like I'll have gotten 7 years out of it.
Weber which is a much better unit should last longer.
I paid $169 for mine but because the guy made an error in which unit he quoted me, they gave us a $300.00 unit for the $169 price.
Those same $300 units now sell for $189 or so. Prices have come down.

I know the Weber you bought and that one is a good one which should deliver you delicious hot meals at least through 2011.

Sweet!

When the weather cooperated, we grilled about 5x a week. We're down to about 2 or 3 now, but that's as low as I expect it to get. Now is the time to try some stuff I haven't tried before on the grill in preparation for 2010.

Well since you are like me and hate the cold - there will be days where you say that you WANT to BBQ but it is just too frickin cold for your body to stand there flipping stuff on the grill. Also, the outside temp drastically cools down the surface of the meat/fish etc. being cooked in cold weather.

A little scotch might help that.

As for the ambient temp--good to know. I'll have to give that a test--I've never grilled in anything below 60F before.

It definitely affects the outcome. I typically put burgers on the grill, close the top and "bake them" for 5 minutes on each side. Then I put cheese on them, close the lid for a minute and they are done. In cold weather, the minute you open the lid, the cold air whooshes in and the heat dissipates so the second "baking after flip time" takes longer in the dead of winter.

Now for Chicken, I line the grill with foil ( 3 layers to insulate) and then cover the chicken with a layer of foil completely sealed for 45 minutes and never check it at all. The chicken almost steams for 45 minutes but does not dry out.
you can baste/marinate it in whatever basting suits your collective fancies.

The last 15 minutes I remove the foil cover and then it gets nice and crispy on top. That method has been foolproof and took years of "Chicken titration" to get it just right.
That closed lid style of cooking is not as susceptible to the temp variations but your thermometer should tell you what the inside temp is when it is 15 out. When it is 15 out and the wind is really blowing - it does have an influence on the cooking time.

Who works at the marketing & PR dept at Microsoft?

Give them a slight raise. I didn't think I would say this but, As of recent Apple has been going nuts with these lame cheesy commercials attacking win7, it's starting to look like apple is desperate when there's no need to be to the point of being annoying. Microsoft needs to focus on this "I am a PC and this was my idea" pieces they don't even mention Apple. How many commercials can Apple make talking more about PC? BTW I like to see Droid start more DroidCan Commercial Campaigns

The Warning (Derivative risk ignored in '96).

PBS Frontline is running a good piece this week about the former chairperson (Brooksley Born) of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) who tried to regulate derivatives (like Credit Default Swaps) and was literally squashed by former Fed Chairman Greenspan, Treasury Secretary Rubin, and Rubin's Chief of Staff Summers.

It can be watched online here: »www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/warning/

This is really an important part of the recent financial meltdown. She warned of the opaque nature of the derivatives market a year or two before Long-Term Capital Management (LTCM) failed in 1998 due largely to its use of derivatives. At the time of that crisis, LTCM held $129 bil in assets and $1025 bil ($1.25 trillion) in derivatives.

After LTCM's crash:

• Brooksley was forced out of the CFTC.

• Rubin went on to head Citigroup (which is still receiving bailout money).

• Summers is now a policy adviser to President Obama.

• Greenspan, who held such extreme (pure libertarian) "free market" beliefs that he even argued for deregulating margin/leverage requirements just a week before the LTCM crisis, appeared before Congress and admitted that the worldview which had guided many years of his life was wrong.[1]

This helps demonstrate how there were many components to the crisis.

1. Nobody wanted to take away the punch bowl in the middle of the party.

2. Greenspan made "free money" available to bankers for too long. By 2003, Fed rates (after adjusting for inflation) were below zero.

3. Wall Street (in the early 90s, leading to a CMO crash in '94) had found how to securitize mortgages and "insure" the risk.

4. By the late '90s regulators of major banks around the world required greater capital reserves. Banks saw how Wall St. could lend with minimal capital (by selling securitized instruments to investors). With free money, and the newly-created Credit Default Swap (CDS) "insurance," banks could literally lend to everyone. Investors who bought the securitized debt were "insured" against risk. And, borrowers might even repay the loans.

5. In '99, a Republican led Congress (after the stunning LTCM failure) passed legislation to prohibit states from regulating CDSs. Bill Clinton signed it.

6. Relentless deregulation that started during the Reagan administration steadily shifted lending to the purview of non-regulated entities, until by 2006, only about 1/4 of all lending occurred in regulated sectors, down from about 80% twenty years before.

7. Decomposition of mortgage lending (from an S&L performing all services) led to profound "Agency" problems. (Brokers, bankers, investment houses, CDS underwriters, servicers and investors serving their individual needs even though it's destructive to other parties who will ultimately "own" the mortgage.).

8. Societal emphasis on the desirability of "everyone" owning a home. From President Clinton's relaxation of HUD rules in '95 to President Bush's "ownership society" mantra in the 2000s, and his own relaxation of HUD rules.

To help put Brooksley Born's timeframe in perspective, the CDS market (only one form of derivative) expanded from just $180 billion in 1996 (when Brooksley warned Congress of the broader derivatives market) to a whopping $57.9 TRILLION, in 2007.

Windows 7

I have owned Windows 7 for quite a while now. I think it runs pretty fair especially when compared to Vista. The biggest issue that killed Vista was resource load and drivers. The forgiving nature of Windows 7 when using other drivers will take this OS a lot farther than Vista. I bought a copy of Windows 7 Pro for my lappy and my desktop through the school for $29.99.

I hope this will stop the children like commercials from Mac, I cannot believe Mac trys to keep a fight for competition going with Microsoft.

Obama declares Swine Flu National Emergency - Why?

While sounding entirely reasonable, Obama has just given himself extraordinary powers and the ability to suspend the Bill of Rights, apparently without any real need to do so. WHY??

None of this means that federal agents are going to march door to door arresting people at gunpoint if they refuse the vaccine, but they could if they wanted to. Your rights as an American are no longer recognized under this national emergency declaration.

Declaring a national emergency immediately gives federal authorities dangerous new powers that can now be enforced at gunpoint, including:

• The power to force mandatory swine flu vaccinations on the entire population.

• The power to arrest, quarantine or "involuntarily transport" anyone who refuses a swine flu vaccination.

• The power to quarantine an entire city and halt all travel in or out of that city.

• The power to enter any home or office without a search warrant and order the destruction of any belongings or structures deemed to be a threat to public health.

• The effective nullification of the Bill of Rights. Your right to due process, to being safe from government search and seizure, and to remain silent to avoid self-incrimination are all null and void under a Presidential declaration of a national emergency.

According to the CDC, swine flu infections have already peaked, and the pandemic is on its way out.

Even though the H1N1 pandemic appears to have peaked out, U.S. President Barack Obama has now declared a national emergency over swine flu infections. The reasoning behind such a declaration? According to the White House, it's designed to "allow hospitals to better handle the surge in patients" by allowing them to bypass certain federal laws.

5 new WGA False Postives. Thanks Microsoft!

I visited a customer today, that I hadn't seen for some time.

I was (not completely) surprised to see 5 Dell systems all warning the customers that they were likely victims of piracy.

These were 5 Dell P4s that were all purchased at the same time. They had the XP Pro Cert of Authenticity complete with WinXP Pro Key stuck on the side of the computer (by Dell). The OS keys match the ones on the cases.

I arranged the purchase of these things from Dell, 5 or so years ago. I installed them onto the network and have seen them through a number of successful WGA validations.

It looks like the WGA KB update MS pushed through a few months ago, is the culprit. They said the systems have been crippled for a few months.

It had me thinking of those folks who endlessly defend WGA as a harmless process because they weren't inconvenienced by it. That the collateral damage (my billable hours) caused by Microsoft defending it's interests is all very appropriate and acceptable to them.

I'm sure they're quite ready to walk the talk and pay what it costs to correct MS licensing screw-ups. If not, they really should keep their pro-MS diatribes internalized.

I shill for MS when it's appropriate to do so. WGA is anything but appropriate.

Dear Micro$oft:
attempting to take the position that your upcoming borkage of "unofficial" memory units is in the interests of protecting us from those unscrupulous cheaters and their shameless attempts to boost their gamer score.
By all means, please make us pay 4 times the average retail rate per mb for storage.

complete BS and everyone (including you guys) know it. There is no reason at all for you to do this for the reason stated (im sure that the money you are hoping to rake in as a result is something to good to pass up for you).

yeah, as surprised as i am to say this, between this and the rumors of doubling the annual price tag on gold level live memberships, looks like whatever the current 360 im on now is going to be the last M$ console that graces my entertainment center.
