Well I know I got 2 As and 1 B so far... one more class that doesn't report grades throughout the semester and I am not sure on yet. So I have to wait until they post final grades in the system (probably next week).

Still at work

Rebuilding an SQL server that I just finished single-handedly corrupting with a single query script.

Fortunately for me the database is small and this is a part-time production server. I have some time. lol

Have yet to screw up a DB via my own mistakes, but, I do manage a couple, and write the software to write to them.

I work on the production server directly... then again, it's no big deal if I screw it up. Just a few minutes of downtime while I drop and recreate the DB and populate it again with a few items.

Re: Still at work

I'm an SQL newbie though

I restored the database with success. But the EMR app that uses it won't start. The logs say a certain user cannot login because it doesn't exist, but it does.

It exists on the security table of the database but not on the security list of the SQL server. Not sure why this is an issue now, never had this problem before with many database restores.

Gonna come in early Monday and try to fix it.

Torture and Guantanamo Bay

I say we leave it open. However waterboarding will no longer be necessary. People like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and Osama Bin Laden will tell interrogators all information they know and have after being forced to watch this video for hours on end.

Also, after looking at this video, am I the only one who thinks the guys look like the Crimson Guard from G.I. Joe? You know before they started with Cobra?

Dexter last episode sunday!

Woot I can't wait for sunday to watch dexter's season 4 last episode. Going to have friends and family come together to watch it.

Aside from that, it's going to be a rainy weekend here so I am definitely going to be home most of the time. Love the rain Cleans out the air and the surface. Just love the sound of rain while having a nice warm cup of tea looking out the window. Childhood memories, aaahhh....good old days in Germany.

If you're going to blame him for a growth in Afghan casualties, you have to credit him for a significant reduction in Iraq casualties.

I think most opponents of President Bush's approach to the war opposed what they felt was squandered resources in Iraq. I think most were FOR fighting in Afghanistan (from whence 9/11 originated).

I think that's where the anti-war protesters make a mistake. They capitalized on the anti-Iraq sentiment during Bush's term, and made it out to be an anti-war (pro-peace) sentiment. Today they complain that there's been no reduction in war. But, I don't believe the public really opposed war, just Iraq.

If that's true, President Obama is following public sentiment. (Although that may be changing as Afghanistan appears to be a corrupt society not worth defending.).

To "Krk's" video, I agree that Obama has amazing abilities to talk around anything. To me, he's an example of how American politics swings from one extreme to another. We had a swaggering cowboy who didn't care what anyone thought. Now we have the consummate deal maker ("can't we all just get along?").

I don't know which is best. Conservatives like to point out how Obama is a lukewarm dishrag. But, it seems to me they should be ecstatic over that. At least he's not a raving far-left liberal like Conservatives warned. He carried on Bush's war (but focused on Afghanistan). He continued Bush's financial bailout program. He retained Bush's financial leaders (Geithner, Bernanke). He's willing to have healthcare reform without a "public option" (which, to liberals, isn't reform). And, he just turned the controversial Nobel prize (which was intended to be a slight against a former President) into a defense of the former President (and more hawkish Americans).

You know he's in the middle when both the far Left is mad at him, and the far Right (who said he was going to be more radical, and he only *appeared* to be moderate).

Of course by now his statement to "take an indefinite break from professional golf" is well known. Tabloid feedings aside, though his career essentially began to end with the first affair, this is effectively the extinction of an amazing athlete. Sucks.

Mother of the Gunman who shot up Times Square is crying about how the Cop should of just "Shot her son in the leg" to "Stop him."

For F's sake--- He had a MAC10 and he's shooting at the Officer and she says "Shoot him in the leg."

Cop did absolutely the right thing in shooting him down! Too bad you can't arrest the mother for unleashing such trash on the rest of humanity. We can sure see her values!

Back in My Day, the Internet was Way More Wild.

Or so I think.

My first of two examples of early internet sub-humanism.

Alphaville:
This Sim Online city really needs it's own Wikipedia entry. In less than a year after the 2002 launching the EA online game; Alphaville city degenerated into a festering pit of organized crime, human slavery and child prostitution.

said by The BBC :

One of the first people you meet is a kindly looking granny who greets you with a slap round the face and a barrage of abuse.

Escaping to one of the "safe" homes you find a den of thieves who trick you into handing over all your cash.

The local newspapers are full of investigations into child prostitution, rampant crime, mafia-controlled neighbourhoods, shadowy self-declared governments struggling to maintain order and runaway inflation.

Welcome to Alphaville.
Peter Ludlow, a philosophy prof at the Univ. of Michigan, came to document the exploits in an in-Sim newspaper called The Alphaville Herald. Ludlow contacted EA management, who did what any responsible party would do.

They banned him from the game and canceled his account.

Ludlow took the paper offsite and continues it today.

In 2004, the Boston Globe covered how some of Alphaville's denizens found protection from the dominating criminal element.
said by The Boston Globe :

Alphaville's a tough town, the sort of place where even the street-smart are rarely safe and newcomers are often eaten alive. You can call the cops, but they usually don't arrive in time. That's why so many Alphaville residents seek justice by hiring guys like Jeremy Chase. He runs a band of thugs who'll gladly deal out ugly punishments for the right price. Chase, a 26-year-old resident of Sacramento, runs the Sim Mafia.

...Chase sends instant messages to other members of his group, and a campaign of harassment begins. The target starts receiving a flood of insulting messages. The Mafia members can add him to their "enemies list," a way of affecting the target's popularity rating inside the game. Unpopular players find it hard to make friends and buy new properties, or "lots."

There are more severe punishments, such as the dreaded "lot job," in which a Sim Mafia member gains access to someone's lot, then trashes it, destroying properties the player might have spent months acquiring. But the most severe punishment -- forcing someone to delete his Sim character -- is reserved for Sim Mafia members who've violated the rules of the organization. Chase calls it a "Moe Green Special," in honor of one of the gangsters murdered by the Corleone family in the film "The Godfather."

Chase insists that he and his Mafia are only out for a good time.
And Boing Boing offered this interview with "Evangeline", of whom I have no further comment.

More (historical) Fear and Loathing in Cyberville.

My second example of Internet Degeneration:

In 1999, Alexandre Varioukhine was crafting free utilities and distributing them from his German site; antimensch.de (long defunk and now parked).

I always thought his OpenScreens idea was clever.
AV's OpenScreens Project involved his ScreenSaver and a Some Text.

Folks would go to Alex V's Website.
They'd submit whatever stray line of thought demanded to be known.

Across the world,
the screensavers would promptly display the offering
and hilarity/boredom/offense ensued.

Most of the time it was pretty clean. Often enough, the messages were really funny, really odd or downright bizarre.
If the same line remained too long one might feel to contribute something to break the monotony. You get the idea.

After a time, one user began using OpenScreens to advertise his own site. Mostly nobody paid it much attention.

That is, until a few somebodies decided that OpenScreens was not to be used as an advertising vehicle.
They began a campaign, of sorts, against the poster.

Website Guy would post his link and the vigilanties would quickly respond with some insult or sarcasm. In response to which, Website Guy would post his link again. On and on this went until someone WhoIs'd his domain.

One Day, Site Guy posted.
The following post was a first and last name.
Site Guy's Link would quickly return.
Then that name again.

Back-and-Forth that went for a while.
(The origin domain of the current post also showed in small print. By now, a lot of these were like server.anon-addy.net.)

Later was (I assume) his wife's name. Then, her maiden name.

In a few more days we had what must have been
relatives names, addresses, phone numbers, etc;
interspersed with The Site Guy's Link and his snide comments.

The last part I remember, were a number of posts that went something like this:
"Martin Smith - Jennifer Smith - Maggie Sue Smith (age 1) 2222 runaway dr. Pike Snot, MO 66543 - 634-771-8846. Maggie's soooo cute!"

That seemed to do it for Site Guy.
Now he contributed all sorts of explitives in caps.
He also offered substantive cash bounties for the identities of his tormentors.

I uninstalled the screen saver. I don't know if he ever uncovered his nemesis-s (nemesi?).

A few months later I went back for a peek but it seemed the site author had had enough.
Alex now leads a nondescript life, quietly offering his IT Services, under a modified name; undoubtedly wiser for his experience.

I suppose I do like hanging out with a well moderated bunch.
But I don't think the minor internet happenings are as interesting as they once were.
