The state's Public Utility Commission has given an important consumer-protection job to a woman who bought her undergrad and graduate degrees from an unaccredited online "university" in the Caribbean.

Six years ago, the same institution, Almeda University, awarded an associate degree to Wally from Albany, N.Y. - a 7-year-old dog.

She will direct the Bureau of Consumer Services, which deals with informal consumer complaints and mediates conflicts between utilities and consumers. She begins Feb. 8.

Bechtel's resume includes 28 years as a project manager and department head at UGI Utilities and time as a Philadelphia start-up [b]director of Comcast's consumer relations in 2008.

The Better Business Bureau's Web site says Almeda degrees are not legal for academic or business purposes in Oregon, New Jersey, North Dakota, Washington and Idaho. Education officials in Connecticut, Texas and Florida have also warned citizens that Almeda degrees may not be valid for public employment.

Who should care about the fake degrees? It seems to me that 28 years of experience as a project manager more than qualifies her for her position. If she didn't know what she was doing she wouldn't have lasted 28 years.

A college degree is no guarantee of competence. Neither is the lack of a degree any indicator of incompetence. All that a lack of a degree means anymore is that it guarantees that someone hasn't been exposed to the political indoctrination given in our institutes of "higher" learning.
