| The Politics of Beer said by blog.nielsen.com July 30, 2009 :Is the President Seeking to Connect with Mainstream America by Choosing Bud Light? The White House announced that the President will be drinking Bud Light at tonights much-publicized Beer Summit. Consumer and media research firm Scarborough Research shows that Bud Light is also the beer choice for politically mainstream Americans. Bud Light drinkers (ages 21+) have no distinct political profile. They are just as likely as all drinking-age Americans to consider themselves Democrat, Republican, or Independent, and are average for voting in presidential, statewide and local elections. Bud Light drinkers are also average for being registered to vote. Concrete Proof.
1. President Barack O'Bama reveals his bias (beer-as?) again.
2. Beer Drinkers have no distinguishing characteristics whatsoever.
Now you know.

| Re: The Politics of Beer I didn't pay too much attention with regard to the specifics, because I believe it's a bit broad to classify Bud drinkers as less political or involved as a non-Bud drinker.
With that said, as an Obama supporter and a supporter of all things beer, I found his choice of beer poor. Not that I have anything against Bud specifically - I enjoy an ice cold Budweiser in the summer - I would have preferred Obama think about it a little. I'm sure there are many fine small American breweries in the D.C. area. Heck, not that far up the road from D.C. is America's Oldest Brewery. They offer many nice brews. Seems it would have been a little more logical to pick there, have the media do a little piece on them, bring some attention to a place in PA that can probably use the attention.
Meanwhile, Bud advertises in more mediums than I can count, so they don't exactly need the help. -- "Soulshine. Better than sunshine. Better than moonshine. Damn sure better than rain."

| 'back when TV's were Steam Powered. I strung together a bunch of net videos tonight. Together, they made a NBC Thursday night lineup, circa 1985. The Cosby Show - Family Ties - Cheers - Night Court - Hill Street Blues.
My 16yo had never seen any of these shows, thought they were hilarious. I hadn't seen them all in the same night, since the 1980s. The lineup was like a micro golden age o' tv.
Seems there was always one show no one liked as much as the rest. I didn't care much for Family Ties back then, my wife didn't do HSB.
Tonight, the draw was good enough to have everyone in the room, watching the same thing - without coercion.
Who'd of thunk it?

| Condition'd for Suspicion Hmmmm. |
. . It's been 20 years since I first understood the lengths the press will go through, to form public opinion via the news. That has me evaluating, every facet of content delivery, to see if there is a larger goal in story choice and layout.
Sometimes I see clear agenda, othertimes I can rule it out; most often there isn't enough evidence to say anything.
In my opinion, Matt Drudge has always scrutinized the grouping of his stories. Sometimes I see agenda, sometimes they're ordered just because of similarities.
Tonight's story grouping bothered me, no matter the reason.
I object to a story, about the PotUS's children, directly adjacent to a story about a murdered child; in an upscale environment.
No matter the intent, I still see association. Consideration and tact should have had a couple of bylines padding between the two stories.
To take a step back, I believe anything other than a full news blackout of every President's (under 21yo) children, is inappropriate. I don't care if his 12yo wins the No-Bull-Please-Prize. Positive stuff can be novelized after office.
No sitting president should ever have his/her minor children in the news, even if they desire it. The children sacrifice enough, we shouldn't taint what little they retain of their parents during the 4/8 years.
I like Matt Drudge and I openly support (much of) his agenda. However, I strongly feel he should have handled this choice differently.

| Re: Condition'd for Suspicion I tend to agree with you on the children should be off limits, not that they ever have been, but that is another topic. To follow up on what you said, yes, off limits, but when one of the parents decides to use them for pushing their pet project, then they (the parents/president/first lady) have no room to talk, or b*tch about media coverage of their children, since the parents opened the door.
In short, both sides need to leave the children out of the media.

But when something negative crops up they scream & whine about how it hurts the children if covered. I agree kids should be hands off, but it never will be as long as the pols continue to use their own kids.

| Weaponizing Budget Deficit for political gain
"The main difference between last summer, when we were mostly (and appropriately) taking deficits in stride, and the current sense of panic is that deficit fear-mongering has become a key part of Republican political strategy, doing double duty: it damages President Obamas image even as it cripples his policy agenda. And if the hypocrisy is breathtaking politicians who voted for budget-busting tax cuts posing as apostles of fiscal rectitude, politicians demonizing attempts to rein in Medicare costs one day (death panels!), then denouncing excessive government spending the next well, what else is new?
The trouble, however, is that its apparently hard for many people to tell the difference between cynical posturing and serious economic argument. And that is having tragic consequences.
For the fact is that thanks to deficit hysteria, Washington now has its priorities all wrong: all the talk is about how to shave a few billion dollars off government spending, while theres hardly any willingness to tackle mass unemployment. Policy is headed in the wrong direction and millions of Americans will pay the price. "

| What is missing from this (and most) discussions about taxes and deficits are two points. First, there is no linear relationship between tax rates and taxes collected. The relationship is bell curved. If you tax too heavily, the activity that is taxed will diminish to a point where less revenue is taken in. Liberals think of the world as static. They think that I will stand still while they shoot at me, but I won't. I will duck and dodge, and adapt (anyone hear of offshoreing). Secondly, apparent fairness in a tax is crucial to it's acceptance. We drive on potholed roads, watch our schools crumble, see old folks who worked until they couldn't any more go hungry, all the while the self selected poverty class "leeches" live better than the majority of people in the world without a lifting a finger, politicians build monuments to themselves with little or no public benefit, and in general, most tax dollars are used for things I do not agree with. I would be less inclined to duck and dodge, and would more easily accept higher taxes if I agreed with how the majority of taxes were used. | |
