Older Folks on Social Networks Are Growing Fast

»news.yahoo.com/s/nf/20100827/tc_nf/74945
According to a new study from the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project, social-networking use by those 50 years old and up has nearly doubled in the last year.

The report, released Friday, said social-networking use among people aged 50-64 grew from 25 percent to 47 percent, an 88 percent increase, from April 2009 to this past May. Use by those over age 65 doubled, to 26 percent from 13 percent. Contrast this to a healthy but much smaller growth among users aged 18-29 -- 86 percent from 76 percent.

She noted that while e-mail is still the preferred electronic means for older users to maintain contacts, many are now using social-networking platforms for daily communication. Twenty percent of those aged 50-64 use social-networking daily, double the rate of a year ago. Among those 65+, the rate is 13 percent, compared to four percent in 2009.

Sharing status updates through Twitter and other services is also becoming more popular among older users, in particular those aged 50-64, with 11 percent using that service, compared to five percent a year ago.
on Facebook I notice that grandparents are becoming a larger & larger segment in order to stay involved with their children & grandchildren.

I committed Facebook suicide 3 weeks ago. Took 14 days of inactivity to finally get rid of it. I really don't miss it. It was more trouble than it was worth.

Another giant patent lawsuit by Paul Allen of Microsoft fame

Named in the suit are AOL, Apple, eBay, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Yahoo and YouTube, which Google owns. The companies are allegedly using technology developed in the 1990s by now-defunct Interval Research Corp., a technology incubator funded by Allen during the Internet bubble.

The technology includes ways of delivering through a browser items that may be of interest to an online shopper checking out other products on an e-commerce site. The same technology has been adapted for used in social networks and in delivering search results.

David Postman, spokesman for billionaire Allen, said in a statement. "We are not asserting patents that other companies have filed, nor are we buying patents originally assigned to someone else. These are patents developed by and for Interval."

Missing from Interval Licensing's latest suit is Microsoft, which Allen co-founded with Bill Gates. Allen remains a major investor in the company. Also missing is Amazon.com, based in Allen's hometown of Seattle.

Forbes magazine estimates Allen's worth at $13.5 billion. His investments since leaving Microsoft more than two decades ago have gone beyond technology to sport teams, including the Seattle Seahawks and Portland Trailblazers, and cable TV.
Years in the courts and billions of $ involved. I'll bet some or all settle before the trial.

P.S.>> More info and discussion on whether Allen is a patent troll or asserting legitimate claims:

Google creates another SPECIALIZED search tool - Realtime

On Thursday, Google unveiled a standalone page for searching the "realtime Internet" —code for social network updates from the likes of Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter. The feature, called Google Realtime, comes a couple months after search competitor Bing launched Bing Social, which also lets you search the worldwide realtime firehose.

I checked out both and the Bing search is much more flexible and usable.
The Google version is overwhelmed with Twitter results with no easy way to break out results by other social services.

That may be, but it's named Bing. No amount of usefulness will ever overcome that.

Hmmmmm Tasdeity! FSM served live, with magic sauce! Kind of like eating that Carp Live, without the deepfry.

Now you've got me hungry for one.

If a Firefox fan, you can now get it for Android phones

The Mozilla Foundation on Friday said it was releasing an alpha-test version of Fennec, its mobile version of Firefox, for the Nokia N900 and smartphones running Android 2.0 or above.

The new browser provides "Firefox Sync built-in into the browser, which provides seamless access to Awesome Bar browsing history, bookmarks, passwords, form-fill data and open tabs," according to a Mozilla blog post.

Fennec's pace of development has been almost comically slow. In the meantime, the alternative browser market for Android is thriving, led by the excellent Dolphin HD and Opera Mini browsers. Dolphin HD also supports add-ons, and many are available in the Android Market.

The Fennec alpha is only available from Mozilla's Web site, not from the Android Market, so you need to enable non-market applications in your preferences to install it.
Info on how to get it is here: »blog.mozilla.com/blog/2010/08/27···ia-n900/

And here is a list of Android phones that should allow it to be installed:

Sarah Palin & Hillary Clinton

To the post below:

said by oneacn:

Sarah Palin & Hillary Clinton
What kind of party would be have if Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin ran for President and Vice President. Men have screwed up this country for years lets let 2 females try and clean it up in 8 years.

I am prepared to get flamed for this one
I won't flame you. Heck I'd vote for them in a moment.

The best part would be watching the press be overcome with paroxysms. They'd have to support Palin in order to keep their party in power. The stroke rate among journalists would skyrocket.

I'd pay good money for the privilege of witnessing that.

Re: Sarah Palin & Hillary Clinton

It would definitely be good for the ratings ...

»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spectacle

Spectacle
In general spectacle refers to an event that is memorable for the appearance it creates. Derived in Middle English from c.1340 as "specially prepared or arranged display" it was borrowed from Old French spectacle, itself a reflection of the Latin spectaculum "a show" from spectare "to view, watch" frequentative form of specere "to look at.[1] The term "spectacle" has also been a term of art in theater dating from the 17th century in English drama.

Ancient cultural origins

The term was borrowed from the Roman practice of staging Circuses, in the rather famous philosophy of the Roman elite of "Bread and Circuses" to maintain civil order due to an inability to solve underlying social and economic problems.[2]

The term reminds me of somethings ....

I really like these 2 photos. The bleakness of the dock and clothing in the first one is such a stark contrast to the beauty of the surroundings.

This is another bleak-looking one, but look at the artwork on the front of her dress.

I probably should!
One thing I don't like is how the US promises it's going to bring broadband to rural areas when I really can't see it happening. All these stories about it, when it probably will never even happen. If so, it'll probably come as some slow, expensive wireless technology.

At least I'm moving closer to the city this year and I can move away from slow wireless broadband!

itunes users beware, apple account hacked

OK I have to post this for the weekend thread. My iTunes account was hacked for 3600.00. I have an old nano, none of that fancy new garbage for me.

I had 24 transaction like this one all purchased within a 20 minute period:
1 World War™ Desert Edition, 2700 Honor Points, Seller: Storm8 LLC 149.99

I do not log in and purchase anything from iTunes, all my music comes from Amazon. Last time I did purchase was over a year ago using PayPal. My iTunes account password contained 8 random characters with letters, numbers, caps and punctuation. Difficult at best to hack I would think and I am not key-logged as I have not logged into this account for over a year.

My bank responded quickly freezing all transactions to PayPal. PayPal was awesome. PayPal locked my account. They started and investigation and a charge back to Apple. But Apple wont return calls and even hung up on me when I didn't have the serial number on my iPod. I called their customer support and of course they said someone could call me back. That hasn't happened yet. I emailed a request from their webpage to be contacted. They have not contacted me.

Both my bank and PayPal said I needed to contact iTunes. Well guess what you cannot not. If you try you will hit every roadblock in the world. Apple does not care. Their arrogance showed when they were on the phone. "It's not our fault it is yours." "Oh your password is too simple." and "Don't call us on the phone, you have to email." Well I emailed and they still haven't responded.

If you have an iTunes account, make sure that no credit card, debit card or PayPal account is linked to them. Change your password and pray that the hack on their system gets fixed before your account is ripped off. If you have to purchase from them, go down to the grocery store and purchase a 10 dollar iTunes gift card.

Painting Over Wall Plates

I'd like to take this opportunity to remind people who want to do their own painting to take the extra time and REMOVE all the wall plates from the outlets and switches before getting started.

Aside from the aesthetic reasons, any reasons not to paint over wall plates?

For one, the paint tends to block some of the holes on the outlet. Most of the outlets I've encountered that were painted over have the grounding hole partially obstructed.

On top of that, when it comes time to remove the outlets or change out the wall plate, the plate itself can get stuck to the wall and you can end up with some damage to the walls. In my case, I had to spackle the edges of the holes in the drywall where the outlets are.
