Poland signs ACTA - EU Rep Quits - US Embassy tactics

Poland signed the ACTA agreement yesterday prompting additional protests by activists; that had the country's Prime Minister back up a ½ step with a vow to delay enactment until after some kind of investigation.

The negations that led up to the copyright-treaty signing were so badly compromised that the European Parliament's ACTA monitor resigned in protest on Friday.

Today Polish politicians condemned some post-signing big brothering by the US Embassy as scandalous.
said by translated Gazeta Poland :

An employee of the U.S. embassy in Warsaw to the Polish Sejm phoned and questioned about party discipline during the vote on the desideratum to the Prime Minister ws. ACTA.
It's outrageous, not subject to the administration of President Obama - politicians embarrassed comment.

The day after the vote, a representative of Embassy of the United States called the Polish Sejm, asking how committee members voted ws. ACTA.

In the morning, around 11 lady phoned the American Embassy asking how this came to a vote. Podliczyła voices and lacks some deputies. Eight were in favor, three opposed and four abstentions, well, it gives us such a sum, which is not all - told Mieczyslaw Golba of Polish solidarity.

As he spoke, a woman inquired whether there was a quorum, if so many members were present.

Grysiak journalist Bridget points out that politicians of all options are surprised and embarrassed by telephone from the embassy.

The question whether they were party discipline, that's ... scandalous - said Mr Slawomir Neumann of the PO.

Americans should cool down a little, because such behavior is interference in the internal affairs of the Polish parliament. We feel great friendship for the United States, but somewhere there are limits...

We are partners, not a subordinate parliament in Congress or the Obama administration

Unless the protests are still underway; due to Anonymous keeping attention on the issue.

If Anonymous had
the wealth + political clout that brought ACTA into being,
they'd also be able to purchase laws that would support their activities.

I have no problem with access to this website.

So how is ACTA different from SOPA? is it worse? Makes me wonder if it gets attention from Jon Stewart.

My biggest concern is its reference toward medicine. It will make it more difficult for people with no insurance, crappy insurance (i.e. ones that cover only generic), college broken students and seniors to get access to affordable prescriptions.

Here's an ACTA pdf they sent out, to help elected officials become Right Thinking Politicians.

Happy Friday!

Happy weekend everyone.

Hi backfeed? How are you my friend?

Just finished dinner with the hubby, and getting ready to relax and watch some tv.

The weather is getting cold here, but hell- it's the end of January- and I'm not complaining about the lack of snow. I'm jealous of my brother in law though. He lives in South Carolina and said it was in the 70's down there a couple of days ago.

Time for a trip down south I think... LOL

Hope you and the family have a lovely weekend!

Since we got our new kitchen stove

Since we got our new kitchen stove, we've been eating out less. I even cooked a delicious lasagna. We decided to buy a new stove ourselves because the one provided by the landlord was a piece of junk and was falling apart. The landlord is a "don't bother me unless it's to pay the rent" type. I've done almost everything to this side of the duplex from fixing broken faucets to replacing a bath fan. The many reasons we don't move is we live in the better part of town, the rent is reasonable, it's within walking distance of my mother's place of work, and is in fairly decent shape and has a yard and private garage.

I decided to buy a new stove because the old one was falling apart and the oven would overheat. You would preheat the oven, put a frozen pizza in and if you would cook it according to the package directions, it would be burned in half the time it should be done in. With the new stove, the food is much better and looks like something cooked by Mario Batali on Food Network. It also cooks a good breakfeast except I got scrambled eggs burnt onto a nonstick pan since I am still getting used to the settings. I also undercooked frozen sausages. The tacos that Mom cooked last night came out very good. With the old stove being faulty, I was eating out a lot and I don't have any meal ideas for the near future. I am pretty sure that a home cooked meal is healthier than McDonalds, Wendy's, and Taco Bell. I do like to eat at Subway.

Irish artist builds house out of shredded money

»news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-···289.html

What would you do with $1.82 billion worth of shredded money? In Ireland, people build houses out of it — at least that's what Dublin-based artist Frank Buckley did. The unemployed artist originally wanted to create a gallery for his series of mixed-media artworks called "Expressions of Recession," but he ended up building a house instead.

In all, around 50,000 money bricks went into building the house that consists of a bedroom, a bathroom, and a living room.

If you're wondering how it feels to live in a house made out of paper currency, he said that it's quite warm inside: "Whatever you say about the Euro, it's a great insulator."

Why is cable TV costly? SPORTS! SPORTS! SPORTS! & Disney

»allthingsd.com/20120127/like-spo···-anyway/

Takeaway from today’s chart: Nothing has really changed — you’re still paying a lot for sports, and you’re paying a lot for ESPN.

That’s why Disney’s sports channel is the most valuable asset on your cable dial. And it’s also why you’ve been hearing increasing grumbling — from both customers and ESPN’s non-sports cable competitors — about ESPN’s drag on your cable bill.

Disney and ESPN can charge that much because the cable guys, like Comcast, think the programming is worth it to their customer base. And they’re signing up long-term deals that will keep that fee structure in place for the next decade.

So what about that “over the top” option, anyway? Some industry observers, like BTIG’s Rich Greenfield, are sure that someone — Apple, Google, Verizon, who knows — will offer one this year. Today, Bernstein’s Craig Moffett has a long essay describing why that won’t happen for a long time, if ever. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said something similar this week, alluding to the fact that Microsoft has reportedly bailed on its Web TV subscription plans.

As long as MOST(not all) subscribers demand sports channels(especially ESPN), the cable bills will be high and will be getting higher.

Maybe they could move ESPN into an add-on tier, such as the sports entertainment pack. I have to buy that nonsense just to get Turner Classic Movies and Fox Movie Channel(which my mother watches). Most of the channels I get are garbage, but they make you buy the bad channels to get the good ones. Some of the channels I watch are The Weather Channel, Fox News, WWLP (local station), a few of the Music Choice Channels, CMT Pure Country, Great American Country, VH1 Classic, MTV Hits, and a few others.

I really dig this news for two reasons.

• I'm an anti-ProSports snob.
• I don't own a TV, so no cable bill.

It cheers me up that people (who aren't me)
may realize they're negatively impacted by an industry that annoys me.

(elaboration: Pro-Sports are as meaningful to me - as stamp collecting is to most people.

Imagine you are surrounded by a monstrous national obsession with a multi-billion dollar philatelic industry. You are baffled at the amount of importance and resources people invest in it.

That's describes my relationship with professional sports.

However, I choose to not obsess and will usually shut up about it.)

while yes Apple does have stores, it is not a shock they make more profit. for one thing everything at apple is a high profit product, stores like Walmart depend on raw volume.

Of course a single Walmart also hires as many people as several apple stores.

Twitter users see different feeds based on where they live

Twitter unveils plans on how they will block viewing some tweets based on censorship policies of country the viewer is in. Many are unhappy over this. But seeing how Twitter helped people overturn their leaders in Arab countries, other countries laid down the law to Twitter - screen what we don't like or we shut down your service completely in our countries. Twitter gave in.

My understanding is that Twitter was already complying with certain government takedown requests. Tweets were removed from the entire network.

The difference now is that the tweets will remain and residents of that country receive a Blocked-Notice about the tweet.

That allows two countermeasures to occur.
1) Country-shifting IP techniques can reveal the tweet.
2) A user can request a user in another country to re-tweet the blocked tweet.

Twitter is also publishing a comprehensive list of takedown notices at chillingeffects.org.

I find Twitter's policy to be excellent. It minimizes the effectiveness of government censorship.

It's superior to the policies of many US internet companies
who can't seem to find enough ways to ingratiate themselves
with heavy handed US gov agencies.

Baltic Sea UFO?

"It's definitely something" they say in the video.

Shipwreck hunters stumble across mysterious find

Deep down on the bottom of the Baltic Sea, Swedish treasure hunters think they have made the find of a lifetime.

The problem is, they're not exactly sure what it is they've uncovered.

Out searching for shipwrecks at a secret location between Sweden and Finland, the deep-sea salvage company Ocean Explorer captured an incredible image more than 80 meters below the water's surface.

At first glance, team leader and commercial diver Peter Lindberg joked that his crew had just discovered an unidentified flying object, or UFO.

Agree on the dividend.

But most of Apple's shareholders are institutional shareholders(brokers, mutual funds, pension funds, etc) and by not splitting shares they do them a favor. Purchasing or selling fewer shares for the same amount of money lowers their transaction fees. And they add up quickly when you buy hundreds of thousands of shares at a clip.

Very few companies split shares anymore. It was done in the past so that smaller individual investors could afford to buy shares in their company and so that the price of individual shares remained low enough to interest them. But most small investors don't buy many shares anymore in individual companies. They buy shares in mutual funds and in ETFs where their money is split amongst many companies.

In any case splitting shares is fairily rare today.

I still don't see any practical reason to use any third party anti-virus solution for Windows, at least at the desktop level, now that Microsoft Security Essentials is out there. It works very well for desktop installations and it simply removes the need for any other solution.

But yea... Norton/Symantec/McAfee... all garbage, and in some of our server installs, it isn't even effective at doing its job!

I wouldn't support MS-A/V at first. But their detection rate is good now and it causes less problems that most A/V packages.

I'm installing it now on most machines - except for older/slow systems.
They get Panda Cloud (minus crap-ware) as it is lighter weight and behaves well enough.

Remember the Occupy movement? 300 busted @ Oakland

said by RT :

Police in Oakland, California, have used tear-gas and flash-grenades as a 2,000-strong Occupy Oakland march turned violent, with some protesters claiming that rubber bullets were also fired into the crowd. At least 300 people were arrested.

The demonstrators had attempted to take over vacant buildings to use as their headquarters, they also broke into City Hall and tried to occupy a YMCA. Police spokesman Jeff Thomason told media most of the arrests came around 8 pm local time. Police took many protesters into custody as they marched through the city's downtown area, with some entering a YMCA building.

Officials say, at one point protesters began tearing down perimeter fences around the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center, as some attacked police officers, throwing rocks, bottles and other objects. Police declared an unlawful assembly and used force, according to the Oakland Tribune newspaper.
