Re: Happy Good Friday!!

I was off. Got a lot of yard work done, drug my soon to be classic Mustang out of storage & gave it a good wash & shake down. Off to the shop for the required state inspection next week & hopefully some trips down the beach this year. The next 6 weeks are going to be work work work, but with work work work comes money money money, so I'm good with it.

I'll sleep when I'm dead....

Consumerism gone crazy-teen sells kidney to get iPhone,iPad

He got about $3500 for his kidney.

»news.yahoo.com/five-charged-chin···056.html

Five people in southern China have been charged with intentional injury in the case of a Chinese teenager who sold a kidney so he could buy an iPhone and an iPad, the government-run Xinhua News Agency said on Friday.

The five included a surgeon who removed a kidney from a 17-year-old boy in April last year. The boy, identified only by his surname Wang, now suffers from renal deficiency, Xinhua quoted prosecutors in Chenzhou city, Hunan province as saying.

According to the Xinhua account, one of the defendants received about 220,000 yuan (about $35,000) to arrange the transplant. He paid Wang 22,000 yuan and split the rest with the surgeon, the three other defendants and other medical staff.

The teen was from Anhui, one of China's poorest provinces, where inhabitants frequently leave to find work and a better life elsewhere. He bought an iPhone and iPad, and when asked by his mother where he got the money, admitted selling a kidney.

Apple products are hugely popular in China, but are priced beyond the reach of many Chinese. IPhones start at 3,988 yuan ($633), and iPads begin at 2,988 yuan ($474).

AT&T rolling out Nokia's Lumia 900 on Win Phone 7 on Easter

AT&T will be rolling out the Nokia Lumia 900 which runs on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS on Easter.
»bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/03/2···mia-900/

Here is a review of the phone which will run on AT&T's LTE network.

Windows Phone platform on a bright, crisp 4.3-in. AMOLED screen with a high-bandwidth LTE connection. AMOLED display is made of Gorilla Glass and sports an 800-x-480-pixel resolution.

It has an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with a Carl Zeiss lens, and a 1-megapixel front-facing camera you'll mainly use for video chats. I can't say that I was overwhelmed by the camera; it seemed no better or worse than those in other phones with similar camera specs.

Lumia 900 has a single 1.4GHz Qualcomm APQ8055 processor. It comes with 16GB of internal storage, but no SD card slot to add more if you want. It sports 512MB of RAM rather than the more common 1GB. Despite this, the Lumia 900 is fast and responsive. I experienced no delays in running apps, watching videos, browsing the Web or doing any of my other usual tasks. Judging from the responsiveness of this phone, there's no need for more than one core. LTE connection, the first on a Windows Phone. I found the connection to be quite variable, ranging from about 7 Mbps to 13 Mbps when I tested it in Cambridge, Mass. Reviewers in other cities found variable speeds as well, generally ranging from 8 Mbps to 20 Mbps.

Incidentally, it's easy to forget that smartphones like the Lumia 900 are not just small computers, but phones as well. I found the voice connection to be clear and strong.

And it's inexpensive: A 4G phone that can be had for $99 isn't currently easy to find. But soon 4G will be commonplace on $100 phones, including two upcoming Android-based phones: the LG Viper 4G LTE on Sprint and the LG Lucid on Verizon.

When using LTE heavily for browsing the Web, downloading and using data-intensive apps, I was unable to get a full day's use out of the Lumia 900. In moderate use, it lasted the day. (The 1830mAh battery, unfortunately, isn't replaceable.)

Also, 16GB of storage may not be enough for most people, and the lack of an SD card slot means that this amount of storage is all you'll ever get on the phone. It's true that Windows Phone integrates well with Microsoft's SkyDrive cloud-based storage service for additional cloud storage, but if you want to store music, video or media on the phone itself, you may find yourself hamstrung.

And, of course, there's always the Windows Phone app issue -- the Windows Phone's 70,000 apps lags far behind the 400,000-plus you'll find for Android phones and the 500,000-plus for the iPhone. And it's not just oddball outliers that aren't available for Windows Phone 7; major apps such as Pandora can't be downloaded either.

The bottom line

The Lumia 900 is clearly the best Windows Phone you can buy today, with a sleek design and top performance that rivals the best Android phones and the iPhone. Combine all that with an attractive $99 price, and you have a winner.

AT&T says they are going to push this phone hard to try and keep Apple in check. But rolling it out on Easter and using WP7 makes me think they don't really expect big sales for it.

Got mine(Cyan) on the 6th and love it. Bonus Nokia is now crediting your at&t account for $100 making the phone free. The phone really turns heads. My cousin said it looks like a giant piece of candy. Women love it.

AZ and free speech?

What don't these people understand? The WWW is as lawless as the Wild, Wild, West was in the 1800s. The US cannot impose silly laws on the Internet and neither can Arizona.

AZ can take its state off line - which will put global businesses like one in Scottsdale that it is very large Webpage Host in jeopardy. It can imprison its citizens for using the Internet in an manner not approved by state law.

Arizona can also create its own Intranet for its citizens only. But what Arizona cannot do is shut down the Internet in the other 50 states. The most it can do is block incoming and outgoing AZ traffic -- under the same authority used to block real Arizona highway traffic at the borders.

It surely would be an eye opener if the US did shut down say for an hour one day as a test. How long does it take to pull the plug on the backbone, and how long does it take to get it up and fully functional?

Re: AZ and free speech?

I'm certainly not suggesting that Arizona or any jurisdiction pass such a law, but it is for this reason that we have judicial review. This just reminds me of the old Communications Decency Act that was enacted in the 1990s. Same premise, ban offensive speech, but different justification (porn, not "bullying").

The same result will happen if this were to become law too.

But as always, the solution to being on the receiving end of offensive speech lays with the person on the receiving end, not the sender. More people, children and parents in particular, need to learn how to use the "block" or "ignore" features of their particular social networking site, and use them liberally when needed.

And I always have problems with laws that depend on what is in the MIND of the recipient instead of the sender to determine if a law has been broken. I always see a problem when a law is written where the victim "believed he was being threatened" is the key component. Was there a threat or wasn't there? What the recipient "BELIEVED" should be irrelevant.

Online bullying is the same thing. If the sender said "I will beat the crap out of you the next time I see you", that is bullying. If the sender said "I don't like you and don't want to see you anymore because you are no good", the fact that the receiver is offended shouldn't make that bullying. But a law like Arizonas would make that 2nd type a bullying offense.

Virginia Beach Navy jet crash..

About noon on Friday, residents in Virginia Beach, Virginia, witnessed a fighter jet streaking past — nothing unusual for this oceanside city surrounded by military bases. But this Navy F/A-18D was too low, trailing smoke and flames — and witnesses watched as the two pilots ejected from the aircraft, which careened into an apartment complex, exploding into flames.

"My whole backyard was on fire," said one resident.

It was type of accident that some residents in this city have worried about, amid the familiar rumble of military aircraft. But four hours after the crash, only a handful of injuries and no fatalities had been reported.

The result might have been far worse.

Bruce Nedelka, the Virginia Beach EMS division chief, said that witnesses saw fuel spilling from the jet before it went down and that fuel was found on buildings and vehicles in the area.

"With all of that jet fuel dumped, it was much less than what it could have been," Nedelka told The Associated Press.

It was unclear whether the pilots dumped the fuel or whether the "catastrophic mechanical malfunction" that a Navy spokesman said the jet suffered might have contributed.

The area, about 400 miles south of Washington on the Atlantic coast, has a large concentration of military bases, including Naval Station Norfolk, the largest naval base in the world. The F/A-18D was assigned to Naval Air Station Oceana, about four miles southwest of the Mayfair Mews Apartments, scene of the crash.

John Swain, who was exiting an interstate highway nearby, came upon the scene just seconds after the crash and said it appeared that the jet had hit a two-story apartment complex dead center.

"The plane came right over us and was clearly in difficulty," he told msnbc cable TV. "There were flames coming off the back … The plane got lower and lower and just as I turned … it crashed."

'My whole backyard was on fire'
Ernie Gonzalez, who is retired military, was sitting on the front porch of his daughter-in-law’s house behind Naval Station the base where the jet had taken off. He said a few other jets had departed before the one that crashed.

"He was flying real low like he didn’t have any power," Gonzalez told msnbc.com by telephone.

"He was smoking really bad. Bad smoke was coming out of the engine. It kind of backfired a couple times. I heard two pops … then 15 seconds later I heard the explosion."

Gonzalez said the other jets then started circling around the crash site.

This was all taken from the msn.com news webpage and i'm quoting

Testing out the new Monitor.

Going to get some gaming in on this Korean 27 inch, 2560x1440, LED backlit, IPS, 100Hz monitor I got for under $400 shipped. Barely got time to game at 100Hz the refresh rate really helps. Been waiting years for a >60 Hz high resolution IPS LCD displays.

What's the model?

It is:

YAMAKASI CATLEAP Q270 SE

They are sold on ebay.

However only the older model with serial number starting with:

Q270SE2BXXXXXXX

Is capable of 100Hz+ (one guy got 125Hz but I cant go over 400 Mhz pixel clock on my gtx 470). The newer model:

Q270SE2CXXXXXXX

Is only capable of 67 Hz from what I have heard. But there is a huge thread on overclock.net about possibly getting the older internals and stuff (cause they are compatible with each other) so you can swap them yourself to get the higher refresh rate.

Even 67Hz is an improvement over 60. Honestly I am amazed it took these Korean monitors for 60+ Hz. I don't why LCD's (especially IPS) have been stuck @ 60hz so long. I also don't know why we went from 60 -> 120 (just for 3d) and really almost nothing in between. I am very happy that I lucked out and got the 100Hz model cause I game a lot and it was instantly noticeable going to 100Hz.

Honestly I think it handles 100Hz well even with its 6ms response time. Again this is is an IPS panel (not TN) so great colors/viewing angle. I have been wanting to go high Hz for a very, very long time but I could not give up the resolution or bring myself to go to a TN panel (I could maybe live with TN if it was still 2560x1440, 2560x1600 or higher).

Prepping To Cut The Cord

So my year-long promotional price with Comcast runs out this month. I haven't bugged them to extend it yet, but I've been ordering antenna-related items so that some friends of mine and I can get my house ready should things fall through with them.

I know that even if Comcast does extend the deal they won't do it forever, so even if they do give me what I want, the antenna goes up anyway.

Ours ran out as well a couple of weeks ago.
I logged into the account online and went "shopping" there is a section for current customers (have to look for it). I put a package that was close to what I wanted (added starz) and went into the checkout process. When the chat session started and I gave the account info to the CSR, I simply told them what I was trying to do. I told them that I was open to options and was happy with my current level of service, just had to get some of the cost out. They came back with an offer that was what we like to pay for our level of service. No contract and good for 12 months.
I was happy. I think we just have to go through the process of asking for a current promotion once or twice a year. I am finding that the customers that are willing to go through this process are often rewarded with a little better deal.

Might be worth a try.....
Good luck.

Samsung only smartphone maker challenging Apple

Samsung looks to be the only smartphone maker that is challenging Apple worldwide. Maybe that is why Apple is always suing them.

In any case, Samsung just reported another record quarterly profit:

Samsung Electronics, the world’s top technology company by revenue, posted record quarterly operating profit of 5.8 trillion won($5.1 billion) on booming sales of its Galaxy smartphones and of the Note, a mini-tablet and phone.

Samsung, which raced to the top of global smartphone rankings last year with close to a fifth of the market, from just 3 percent in 2009, is set to go head-to-head with Apple this quarter with the expected introduction of its revamped Galaxy S to take on Apple’s next iPhone.

“Samsung and Apple are expected to launch the new Galaxy S and iPhone in the second quarter, respectively, and they will engage in a full-fledged war,” said Lee Ka-keun, analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities.

“Samsung Handset margins are estimated to have topped 20 percent. Apple had an operating margin of more than 37 percent in the October-toDecember quarter.

Samsung is expected to have shipped a record 44 million smartphones in the first quarter, up by almost 25 percent from October-to-December levels, according to a Reuters survey of analysts.

While Apple is Samsung’s biggest rival in smartphones, the U.S. company is also its biggest client, purchasing Samsung’s high-end displays and microchips for the iPhone and iPad. The two are also locked in a bruising global patent war that spans about 30 legal cases in 10 countries.

Took the home phone back to Verizon Wireline

I took the home phone back to Verizon because Comcast was causing issues with my new alarm system. I am also thinking of switching to DSL for cost savings. I had the technician over the other day to hook up the wiring and I had already done his work because I ran new Cat 5 wire from the RJ31X (alarm panel) jack to the NID and I ripped out the two pair wire that was originally run to the RJ31X since I had to reconfigure the wire to go to the NID for Verizon and I had disconnected the inside wire from the CDV modem. I told the tech I had already done his work and he said he had to test the line from the CO and the splice box. I did spend the good part of an hour chatting with him about networks and technology. He said I could get DSL and have a good connection about $30 cheaper than Comcast. I am thinking of getting DSL and using my Verizon Wireless LTE USB modem for high bandwidth applications. A neighbor came over and asked the tech to cut down a loose phone line that was brought down by the October Nor'easter and had been wrapped around the phone pole ever since. He pulled out his ladder and cut the line down.

AT&T strike off for now

Both sides will continue talks as strike is averted:
»news.yahoo.com/thousands-t-worke···320.html

AT&T said the negotiations reflected "the spirit of the longstanding relationship" between AT&T and the union.

More than 40,000 employees at AT&T Inc will keep working under the terms of an expired labor contract while their union continues negotiations with the telephone company, averting a potentially costly strike for now.
