Google Chrome lovers - now avail for iPhone & ipad

All you Google Chrome browser users, rejoice. The browser is now available on the iPhone & iPad.

I've tried it on my iPad3 and it works well. If you link to saved cloud based info from Chrome on a PC or Mac, when you open another tab you can pick from tabs open on the other devices. It also lets you pick from recently closed tabs; most visited tabs; and bookmarks.

If Chrome is so popular, why is it that practically every other program I download begs me to also install Chrome?

Shouldn't it stand on its own, rather than being bundled with tons of other programs like malware?

Well, it will never be installed on my system. I make it a point not to install things that come bundled with something else completely unrelated.

Next Android release taking on Apple's Siri

»mashable.com/2012/06/29/google-v···ch-siri/

With Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google is taking a shot at iPhone digital assistant Siri.
The next-generation Android OS, announced this week at Google I/O, offers the ability to search for and find information about anything you can imagine by simply asking.
Using the power of Google, the company has incorporated its Knowledge Graph into searches, making its answers more informative than Apple’s digital assistant in some cases.
In other cases, the Android-based voice search not so hot.

When it came to food, Siri was at the top of her game.
For sports, on the other hand, Google was king.

Check out the video at link above for a look at the two search tests in action.

Re: Next Android release taking on Apple's Siri

Another review of Google's voice search for Android vs. Apple's Siri:

But before the new and improved Siri arrives, Google is unleashing an upgrade to its search that, well, blows Apple’s tech right out of the water. Built from the ground up in the new Android Jelly Bean update, the new search engine accepts and answers questions with aplomb. When we first booted it up and gave it a go, it seriously blew us away with how quick it returned results, and the technology’s voice is much more fluid than Siri’s robotic pipes. We pitted the two against each other to see just how great Google’s enhanced search is, and why Apple’s new Siri may already be behind before she even arrives.

Video at link above.

Re: Next Android release taking on Apple's Siri

Probably the reason Apple threw a fit.

"OMG! It's better than Siri? We must SUE THEM and/or ban their device from entering the U.S.!!"

I can't wait until Cyanogenmod gets ahold of Jelly Bean so I can throw it on my D2G and Captivate.

Weekend. Parties & brakes. Yeah, I said brakes

Pulled my 1999 Mustang GT convertible out of storage earlier this month. This is an actual 35th anniversary car with the special body accents and interior features. Only 38k miles on it. Brakes were SHOT. I never saw rotors so pitted. Replaced the rotors, new pads, and hardware. Still feels like the brakes are dragging. I was going to mess with it again today, but it was too damn freakin' hot. From what I read the calipers are known to be troublesome on these cars, and given the refurbs are approx $40 a corner, it may make sense just to swap all 4 of 'em out and have fresh everything all way around.

Too bad a set of 4 Goodyear VR Gatorbacks with 95% tread dry rotted "on the hoof". I mean so bad the tread is dry rot. So once I get the brakes squared away I need to dump about $500 into tires to get her going again, but I don't think it will be a problem.

Headed down to a friend's house in mid state Delaware tomorrow afternoon. Her daughter is going into the Army so they're having a crab feast going away party. Should be a good time. Both the parents were Coasties (they met there & married on a hunch been together 25 years now) so it's a family tradition for them.

I skipped the military for the law enforcement route, no regrets but I probably would have enjoyed the experience.

Should be a good party, and a weekend full of beer, brake fluid, and heat!

Re: Weekend. Parties & brakes. Yeah, I said brakes

DE got hit HARD the other night. I'm just north of the PA/DE line and the storms were so mild in my neck of the woods I slept through them.

I did manage to the the brakes on the car squared away. Ended up being an epic struggle of man vs heat vs defective parts. Two of the 4 calipers I bought had defective bleeder screws. That meant 2 trips to the parts store for each axle.

Finally got it all squared away about 1pm today. Had to bleed the system twice due to some, um complications. But, it's all done and the new brakes work great now.

Brake fluid is some vile shit. Plus I sweat my but off getting this job done in the heat. I haven't sweat like that since my academy days. Drank 3 large Gatorades and didn't whiz once. That's a whole lotta sweating....

Verizon Share Everything works for me

Went to the Verizon store Holyoke Mall and since I use less than a gig per month on the iPhone and about a gig or two on the mobile hotspot on my iPhone, I was decided to give up unlimited data and switch to the 4 gig plan and have unlimited txt and talk on my iphone and have my mifi for the price I was paying for just the iPhone. I was paying about $118 per month with just the iPhone but the new share everything with iPhone and mifi goes abouth $120 per month so it actually works in my favor as I get my 4g mifi back.

My former plan 900 minutes ($59) unlimited data ($30) tethering ($20) and 250 texts ($5). My new plan is smartphone (iPhone) ($40) MiFi ($20) and 4GB of data between the two devices ($60). They told me I could add an iPad to the mix for another $10 per month but my current iPad (original) is the AT&T version.

Con Edison workers' contract expires tonight at midnight

Contract about to expire as heat wave strains NYC's under-funded infrastructure. The new business model: "Screw the customers... screw the workers... everything for the shareholders!"

quote:
"There is no real give-and-take going on," said a spokesman for the union. "Con Ed came and announced to our president that it was time to join a new business model. It's not even a discussion—they just say, 'You better get on board with the new business model.' "

Same 'negotiating' tactic Verizon is using. Luckily, we have held them to the old business model and I don't see that changing any time soon... I think Con Ed workers will do the same. Despite their wishful decrees, it seems they actually do need workers after all.

I agree, and our local has discussed with us the possibility of a mass walkout. Unfortunately, unless the whole system changes, the downward trend will continue... even with small victories here and there we are constantly losing ground. Working under the terms of the old contract (without raises) is a loss when you adjust for inflation.

Con Ed fires union workers; replaces with mgt. Talks are over.

Contract negotiations between Consolidated Edison and its unionized workers broke down early Sunday, prompting the dismissal of about 8,500 workers, utility officials said.

Negotiations between the Con Ed and Local 1-2 of the Utility Workers of America lasted just over 10 days. The contract expired at midnight Saturday, but talks continued early Sunday. Negotiations broke down just before 2 a.m.

Clendenin said the company was calling in 5,000 managers, some of them immediately, to run the utility because it couldn't run the risk of a strike by the workers. He said company officials had asked the union for a two-week extension to negotiate before talks broke down, which union officials denied.

Review of Google's Nexus 7 tablet

The Wapo review of the new Nexus 7 tablet from Google:

In all, I’m impressed by what Asus and Google have done with the Nexus 7. It’s a classy, well-made product from a design standpoint. It may not be the most original, thinnest, or lightest tablet on the market, but it’s certainly a respectable and refined entrant to the race. Bottom line — this is a much better feeling and looking tablet than anything else in its price range.

Inside the Nexus 7 you’ll find a quad-core Tegra 3 CPU clocked to 1.15GHz on four cores (or 1.3 GHz when running on just one), 1GB of RAM, and 8GB or 16GB of onboard storage (that extra storage will cost you an additional $50). Sorry, active downloaders — there’s no microSD slot here. In fact, the Nexus 7’s back panel is not removable at all. The device also packs in Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, and has a GPS chip, NFC, gyroscope, compass, and accelerometer. It’s also got a 1.2-megapixel front-facing camera, as well as a speaker embedded around the back of the device, and what appear to be a pair (there are two identical holes) of built-in microphones.

That camera isn’t really useful for anything but Google+ Hangouts and the like — though it certainly gets the job done.{{like Skype}}

In terms of sheer specs, there’s nothing here to prevent the Nexus 7 from being every bit as useful and usable as its bigger counterparts and competition — even the iPad.

The Nexus 7 boasts a 1280 x 800 LCD display that’s coated with "Corning glass," which I assume means Gorilla Glass. The screen is 216 ppi if you’re keeping count — and it shows. Text and images look crisp and clear on the 7-inch screen — not Retina display quality, but not too far off either.

Performance on the Nexus 7 was zippy. Snappy. Buttery, if you will. We already know that the Tegra 3 chipset is no slouch, and it felt particularly slouch-free on this tablet.

General OS performance was excellent — helped undoubtedly by the Android 4.1 and its "Project Butter" initiative which is said to vastly improve touch response and smoothness in Android. Apps were also quick to open and close, and speedy in use. In particular, 3D gaming that was optimized for the Tegra chipset looked stunning and held steady frame rates, and basic tasks like multitasking were nearly instantaneous.

In the short period of testing I’ve had so far, battery life seems pretty solid — certainly about what you should expect out of a device of this size and with this technology footprint. In our rundown tests, I squeezed roughly six hours out of a fully charged device. Now that’s on 65 percent brightness, with webpages loading constantly. Your mileage when gaming, watching video, and using more CPU-intensive apps will obviously vary.

In practice, Jelly Bean does seem smoother and cleaner than ICS, though I don’t think it’s a sea change coming from 4.0. If you were getting used to Android feeling like a complete and cohesive OS, this will only reinforce that feeling. But in general, things like multitasking and moving into and out of apps seem faster and more responsive, and those long waits for your app list to pop up seems to be all but killed.

While Google’s new OS and latest app initiatives are very, very good, Android on tablets still suffers from an incredible lack of developer support.

Google’s Nexus 7 isn’t just an excellent tablet for $200. It’s an excellent tablet, period. In fact, it’s the first Android tablet that I can confidently recommend to buyers — and not just because it’s got a low price tag (though that certainly helps). It’s a well-designed, powerful, and useful product, with lots of bells and whistles that makes it feel like a device that should be more expensive than it is.

There are still issues that need to be addressed — particularly around growing the tablet app footprint and expanding content offerings — but I don’t think those are deal breakers. The Nexus 7 delivers way more functionality than I expected, and it delivers it in a package that’s sleek, smart, and affordably priced.

Believe it or not, the last time I was surprised by a product with those same qualities, it was called the iPad.

Up next for Google - a Nexus 10" tablet

It should come as no surprise that Google isn't content on releasing a "Google Experience" tablet just in a 7-inch form factor......sources claim Google is continuing on with its quest by attacking the iPad on the 10-inch front.

The sources claim that Google will also launch a 10-inch Nexus tablet using OGS panels from Wintek, making the company the largest touch panel supplier for Google. Also in the 10-inch plan is supplier AU Optronics, the sources said.

There's also talk that Amazon will launch the 10-inch version of its Kindle Fire "Hollywood" tablet before the end of the year. Like the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD (2), it will feature a metal casing rather than a plastic body as seen with the original, a front-facing camera, and a possible mini-HDMI output jack.

So, it looks like the XMAS season will be offering 10" tablets from Amazon, Apple, & Google.

Siri sucks says scrutinizer

A new report about Apple Inc.’s voice-recognition software Siri concludes what many users have been saying for a while: It doesn’t work all that well.

Of 1,600 common searches, the speech technology accurately resolved the request 62 percent of the time on a loud street and 68 percent in a quieter setting, according to a report released today by Piper Jaffray Cos., the Minneapolis-based investment bank. The report graded the technology “D” for accuracy, while predicting it will improve as more features are added.

Munster said that while Siri is good at comprehending what a user is saying and will accurately repeat the question, it struggles turning those words into a correct answer. For instance, Siri will repeat old answers when a user is trying to ask a new question. The technology also struggles when trying to use speech commands to find directions, Munster said.

“Apple right now gets a ‘B’ in comprehension and a ‘D’ in accuracy,” Munster said. “There’s a big difference between comprehension and her actually doing what you want her to do.”

Of several people i know with Siri equipped iPhones, they almost never use it anymore. When they 1st got their 4S iPhones, it was a nice gimmick they tried out. But in day to day use of their phones, it is never used.

Re: Siri sucks says scrutinizer

We tried out Siri in the wake of this massive power outage (see my topic further down).

It did accurately get our many requested, but like it says above it had problems turning that into actions.

Several requests for phone numbers of places that we either knew the address of or the place name of went incorrectly answered.

After these many failures we couldn't really do much else.

Massive power outage

The most recent statistics are that there are at least 6 states (and D.C.) affected.

A million or so people without power, and will probably stay that way for several days, said AEP.

AEP, American Electric Power (I think), had 60%(+/-) of its consumers affected by the massive storm that affected the states.

See:

I was previously one of the affected, but my power just came back on at home.
However, my family runs a local law firm in one of the affected states, and since it's a business, it either never lost power or was one of the earliest to get it back.

So We're staying there tonight, and coming back to a hopefully cooler house tomorrow morning; given that it was 100+ today.

I am in West Virginia on business. It is like the apocalypse here. I was working in Charleston when it hit. Most of this state is without power. Very few gas stations open. I had to drive all the way to Bridgeport to find a hotel room to stay in for the night. Unfortunately it has no power. I almost ran out of gas on I-79. The lines at the only open gas station seemed reminiscent of the gas lines in the 1970's. Hopefully it will get taken care of soon. Hopefully your doing well.

Re: Massive power outage

Agreed on the 'Apocalypse' description.

Earlier yesterday we were driving around (because well there was nothing else to do except enjoy the cool car for the time being) and many places had not changed power status since Friday.

Of course it's today now and I haven't yet had a chance to assess the current power status.

I had problems contacting any AT&T cell sites yesterday with my phone.
I had to travel very far in to downtown in order to get any sort of cell service (however sporadic it may be), whereas normally I have great service out here on the outskirts of Huntington and much of Lavalette.

We were going out to Columbus (to escape the no-power zone) and we eventually had to turn right back and head back (to our law firm, which was originally a house).

The reason for that was that basically no hotels within a 50+ mile radius had power, the ones that did were absolutely full - one even had its last room taken while we were still trying to book it and then another we were able to book but then found they too had no power when neither we nor customer service could raise the hotel.

Of course the outage affected much more than WV, but as it turned out Ohio is even worse off than we are, trying to locate any place that could be reached by phone was a nightmare, a 50+ mile radius search returned *very few* businesses open, in Columbus and in other cities.

As concerning gas, I was so far lucky to only find gas stations with gas & power, but time will tell if that has changed in the meantime between right now and when I had to hunker down for the night.

I mean, we don't have TV here, but we do have Internet - this was the first chance I had to actually see extent of the damages and what kind of ETA we might have on WSAZ.

We have phone, but it's not really a replacement for our home phone service. But hey it's there if we really need it.

I really believe we're going to slowly see some power come back on, but it might be a couple days.

Stay safe out there; people must surely be going stir-crazy right about now - I know I was!

Re: Massive power outage

We know how it feels in west KY, with the major ICE storm that racked the area 2009. I was without power just short of 2 weeks. Some folks out up to 6-8 weeks. In town, typically 1-4 days without. Nights of extreme cold. Gas stations shut down. Couldn't get a generator, propane, chain saw. Shopped in Kroger in the dark. Many people had no running water, or only cold water. Had to pay cash for many items for a time. Nearly every single tree from northern Arkansas to northern KY was affected or damaged. I've never seen anything like that (I'm a meteorologist), and I don't care to again.

oh, and cell service wise, only Verizon worked. AT&T was completely down. No long distance calls were successful. In fact, it was difficult to make any kind of land line call for at least 24 hours.

inside.apple.com down? Leap seconds havoc?

Apple's DNS servers stopped responding for me at 7:00 PM CST.

30-Jun-2012 19:01:26.652 query-errors: debug 1: client 192.168.x.x#33366: view intern
al: query failed (SERVFAIL) for apple.com/IN/A at query.c:6207

bash-3.2# host apple.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached
bash-3.2# host ntp.apple.com
;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached

Restarting the DNS server doesn't fix the problem.

Maybe related? The leap second added today seems to be wreaking havoc in Java under Linux.

Edit: Looks like insideapple.apple.com isn't just down for me. (That's where I first noticed the problem.)

I thought it was just me seeing this. I couldn't find anything specific related to Apple out there among all the outages this evening. I'm trying to query their authoritative servers directly and am not getting any responses from any of them. I'm wondering if more people aren't noticing this because of recursive caches still containing the information. I've got my own DNS server in my house which isn't as nearly primed with data as most ISP's recursive servers.

nserver2.apple.com. 172800 IN A 17.254.0.59
nserver.euro.apple.com. 172800 IN A 17.72.133.64

nserver.asia.apple.com. 172800 IN A 17.82.254.3
nserver3.apple.com. 172800 IN A 17.112.144.50
nserver4.apple.com. 172800 IN A 17.112.144.59

Direct queries to all six authoritative servers from my network connected via Cablevision all timeout.

Re: inside.apple.com down? Leap seconds havoc?

Google's DNS servers seem to resolve it, but they tend to do weird things and bend rules. 4.2.2.2 also concurs that no servers are reachable and cannot resolve any apple.com records.

This finally started working again. Looks like they got the issue corrected on at least some of the servers. It's still a little slow.

Baraka

To get an feel for the film, tune in for a couple of minutes; starting ~13:00.

quote:
a 1992 non-narrative film directed by Ron Fricke. The title Baraka means blessing in a multitude of languages, deriving originally from the Arabic بركة .
It was the first in over twenty years to be photographed in the 70mm Todd-AO format.

Baraka has no plot, no storyline, no actors, no dialogue nor any voice-over. Instead, the film uses themes to present new steps and evoke emotion through pure cinema. Baraka is a kaleidoscopic, global compilation of both natural events and by fate, life and activities of humanity on Earth.

Baraka's subject matter includes landscapes, churches, ruins, religious ceremonies, and cities thrumming with life, filmed using time-lapse photography in order to capture the great pulse of humanity as it flocks and swarms in daily activity.

The film features a number of long tracking shots through various settings, including Auschwitz and Tuol Sleng: over photos of the people involved, past skulls stacked in a room, to a spread of bones.

Baraka compares natural and technological phenomena. It also seeks a universal cultural perspective: a shot of an elaborate tattoo on a bathing Japanese yakuza precedes a view of tribal paint.

Re: Baraka

Sounds very much like Koyaanisqatsi. I have never seen Baraka but I am familiar with some of the music... specifically David Hykes'.

I keep reading that. It sounds like Fricke set down a lot of his directing skills in that flick. I look forward to seeing it.

I was thinking a 4AD band could have written the soundtrack.
It was later on that I looked up the bands that scored it...

Free Air Digital broadcasting.

From where I work I can see a TV tower "WDRB" When the wind blows hard or if it rains the digital signal decreases to the point of signal loss. We have tried outside antennas and inside antennas but the same problem of signal strength moving up and down still happens.

I want my analog back.

Staying INDOORS

Got out Saturday morning before 8am, drove around took around 200 photos of wildflowers along the roadway. The government not mowing the right of way as much causes them go really sprout up.
By 11am, it was already 100 degrees, headed to the store for something cool to drink, spent the rest of the day in the AC post processing the photos. Too hot to be outside unless you are in a pool or at the lake.

Massive copyright spying scheme!

American ISPs to launch massive copyright spying scheme on July 1

If you download potentially copyrighted software, videos or music, your Internet service provider (ISP) has been watching, and they’re coming for you.

That’s the date when the nation’s largest ISPs will all voluntarily implement a new anti-piracy plan that will engage network operators in the largest digital spying scheme in history, and see some users’ bandwidth completely cut off until they sign an agreement saying they will not download copyrighted materials.

Word of the start date has been largely kept secret since ISPs announced their plans last June. The deal was brokered by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and coordinated by the Obama Administration. The same groups have weighed in heavily on controversial Internet policies around the world, with similar facilitation by the Obama’s Administration’s State Department.

Someone should have told Karl this was a secret, because he reported this earlier this week and many other times in the last year.

It seems the catch is ".. If you download potentially copyrighted software ..".

Just don't do that.
