| PC upgrade time Went on a small shopping spree at newegg the other day to upgrade my pc a bit. Bought another amd 6870 so I can crossfire with my other 6870, a western digital 1tb green for movies, music, 2 new 120mm trispeed fans for my push/pull radiator system and a blu ray player with playback software. Accessory wise I bought a new 2.1 40w logitech speaker and a thermaltake usb hard drive dock.I was thinking of upgrading to a solid state drive but right now its too much of a hassle to get everything back up and running.
When I build my next rig in 2-3 years, definetely going solid state. Oh and also rebuilding my desk with a bigger piece of stained maple plywood.

| | | rradina join:2000-08-08 Chesterfield, MO | Re: AT&T to shut down it's 2g network by 2017 Love it or hate it, IE6 was the most advanced version of Microsoft's then vision of the future. That vision was ActiveX controls, DHTML and lots of JScript and VBScript. It was proprietary and designed to keep folks tied to the platform. It succeeded because there were millions of Microsoft desktop developers who believed it was a way to escape the hassles of fat-client app installation woes and feel like they were part of the web revolution. Self-installing ActiveX controls sounded great until it was too late to realize that it did nothing to solve DLL hell and it was a PITA to sign code and keep certificates updated. Thus was born the biggest security hole in history as many shops relaxed security restrictions to allow installation of unsigned ActiveX, with prompting, in an attempt to reduce installation problems and support calls from angry customers.
Although IE6 has many flaws, the security issues might have been reduced if Microsoft only allowed signed controls from a single site (i.e. App Store) or at least servers that sporting an MS-approved certificate. Of course this still doesn't solve the problem that almost all desktop users were local admins and there was no sandbox to contain the controls. Once installed, an ActiveX control had complete control of the system. If it had a buffer-overflow bug, it was easy to compromise the entire system and possibly all the desktops on the local area network. At that time it was common to put all users in a domain group that was then granted local admin on all the desktops.

Let's compare in my area
Verizon HomeFusion which is LTE based - 12 Mbps, 30 GB cap $120 a month. $10 per GB overage.
At&t DSL 6 Mbps, 150 GB cap, $43 a month. $10 per 50 GB overage.
Sorry I'd go with DSL any day of the week.
|
| | | | | | That's not the same comparison. Going from 2G -> 3-G -> LTE is a progression of technologies. Going from DSL to LTE is going from a fixed, wireline technology to a much more constricted wireless technology. The correct comparison would be going from DSL to Fiber. | |

Looks like a poll has figured out that smartphone users are pretty unhappy with many things about their high priced companions.
About 9 out of 10 Americans have cellphones, and the vast majority report problems with their devices, according to a survey by the Pew Research Centers Internet & American Life Project.
The biggest complaint was dropped calls. According to the survey, 72% of cellphone owners reported experiencing dropped calls, and almost one-third said this happens at least a few times a week.
Another issue was unwanted sales and marketing calls, which 68% of cellphone owners reported. One-quarter of owners said they have this problem multiple times a week.
About 70% of people who text said they get spam or unwanted text messages.
Of the more than half of cellphone owners who use their phones to go online, 77% reported slow download speeds.
Smartphone users had more complaints than their non-smartphone-using counterparts, according to Pew. Thirty-five percent said they encountered dropped calls at least once a week, compared with 28% of other cellphone users.
However, maybe smartphone owners are just more sensitive to glitches.
As mobile owners become fond of just-in-time access to others and as their expectations about getting real-time information rise, they depend on the cellphone's technical reliability," said Pew researcher Jan Lauren Boyles.
"Any problems that snag, stall, or stop users from connecting to the material and people they seek is at least a hassle to them and sometimes is even more disturbing than that in this networked world," Boyles said. I chose option #3 use my dual core smartphone with its built in GPS chip and my 32gb micro sd card to run Copilot live... now....
1) No need for 2 devices traveling around. 2) No data usage as copilot has the entire United States and Canada map stored in 2GB of my 32 GB card. 3) Not a bad trade off in my opinion and I never have to worry about if Im not in 4G cell tower range my GPS acting up ( cant load fast enough) or in a rural area with no data and it not worrying at all.

| Thank you Comcast for lousy customer service Comcast Internet went out at 10:15 PM ET and called customer service and I am tired so I cannot think straight. The fact I knew more about troubleshooting cable than the CSR on the phone shows that Comcast does not care about pleasing customers and they can take advantage of their monopoly/duopoly situation.
This is why I would like to broadband ISPs (such as Comcast) to meet the same fate as Bell System/AT&T.
The only other option is DSL, which is like comparing a payphone (DSL) to a cellular phone (DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem).

| rradina join:2000-08-08 Chesterfield, MO | I've been reasonably happy over the years. I've had Charter HSI since the Summer of 2000 (shortly before I joined DSLR). The first few years were painful as they had severe peak-period bandwidth challenges. However, since at least 2005, it's been a very reliable service. Sure there have been outages here and there but nothing really beyond what might be expected when storms and power outages occur.
Overall, I'm far more impressed with the cable companies as they seem to have done a great job of leveraging their existing assets. They pushed fiber into their network at an affordable pace and unlike the ILECs, when they offered new services it was typically to almost all of their customers, not just those who happened to live within a certain distance of a particular CO or RT.
However, I do agree that they are at least oligopolies. As such, they should be closely monitored and properly regulated. IMO, some free-market forces are at work to control total monopoly but I don't believe those forces are strong enough to allow us to get rid of the rule book as they prefer.
I also hold this same opinion regarding the wireless industry. Some market forces are at work but it's an oligopoly and those forces aren't strong enough to truly guarantee that consumers aren't at risk.
I think it would be interesting if we created a few simple rules for both wired and wireless:
1) Metering #1: maximum $5/month charge and all data use is metered, multiplied by a rate and billed. The rate must be consistent no matter how much data is used. 2) Metering #2: no monthly charge and all data use is metered. Rates can vary based on total use. 3) Unlimited means unlimited. No caveats about it being unlimited until the provider determines you are using too much. It's unlimited. If you offer it, either make sure your network can handle it or price it so only the few can afford it. 4) Text messages are data and are covered under 1, 2 or 3. 5) Voice is data and it's covered under 1, 2, 3. 6) Providers must support voice services on WiFI. (i.e. If someone calls my mobile number and I'm on WiFi, the call takes place over WiFi and it costs me whatever the WiFi bandwidth costs. If that service isn't metered, the call is free.) 7) Neutrality means just that. There's no special network that isn't metered for certain services or prioritized for certain traffic. If prioritization is necessary for certain types of services, the provider must allow equal access to such prioritization. The provider cannot operate an overburdened network where only their product traffic works well.
I'm sure it wouldn't take long for providers to still figure out a way to get around these rules but it would be a start. It would also be very interesting to see how this would change packages, prices and profits.

Unlike the previous rovers, this one won't be bouncing on the surface of the planet in a big ball. Instead, this rover will be tethered to a rocket propelled platform that will deposit the rover on the surface, cut the supporting cables, and fly away to crash at a safe distance from the rover.
It always amazes me how much NASA tries different ways to stress everyone beyond belief with a landing on an alien planet!

That being said, the caps they do have, the pricing and the overages are total BS. And this is the reason i will not upgrade to LTE, probably ever.
The truth is, even if they had caps down to earth (say, 50GB/mo instead of the ripoff plans where they give you 5 or 10 at the cost of your first born) that really did address network congestion. It still isn't good enough for me to justify dropping 50-100 bucks a month.
LTE is the best wireless we got. But it's not good enough to be even mentioned in the same sentence as a wired connection because of it's extremely limited capacity.
They're not getting a dime from me. Even if they started giving away the radios for LTE in tablets i'd still opt for a WiFi only version if it saved me 2 cents.
