Did Apple ever really invent anything?

An interesting video.... and one that shows the patent stupidity that Apple has engaged in.

Who would you rather be? The inventor, or the guy who made BILLIONS bringing it market?

Don't get me wrong--- I like Apple products. I agree Jobs was a great visionary and marketer. What I don't agree with is the douchebag approach of taking others works and then claiming complete ownership of said ideas, patenting said works and trying to block and prevent competition by abuse of the courts and the patent system. Something this video mentions.

The bit about the Apple logo was quite amusing, well done.

Kind of late for this: steam subscriber update

I know its late for this but i never got around to it. Wonder if they will loose any customers or more importantly any gamers?? If I were steam I would slowly back away from something like this.

Just hope steam knows what they are doing..

It comes down to 'how many class action suits have you been involved with, and how many do you expect to be involved with, during your entire life?'.

Definitely one of those non events, a reason to hate on Steam, that no one ever needed. Heck if I want to hate on Steam, I can do better than this update. Not that I want to hate on Steam, but I know of better reasons if I needed to.

Many people dismiss class action lawsuits as being useless for getting any kind of compensation for the people who were wronged. Maybe so, but that misses the bigger picture. Class action lawsuits still punish companies for wrongdoing. If a company screws over enough customers for there to be a class action lawsuit in the first place, something obviously needs to be done. Even if each user only gets a few bucks, the company still has to pay out millions. That hits the company in the bottom line and maybe next time they'll think twice about screwing their customers.

Now that class action lawsuits are effectively banned, any dispute with the company has to be settled via arbitration, which usually goes in the company's favor. So now they get to screw over customers and not face any consequences for it.

You don't think that's something to be concerned about?

Finally, think about this; If class action lawsuits are so useless, why are so many companies rushing to prohibit them?

Class action lawsuits should be banned as they only benefit the lawyers. A few years back, Sears got hit with a class action suit regarding quotas for selling unnecessary repairs to cars in their auto centers. The plaintiffs lawyers made millions and the affected customers got coupons for discounts on future service.

If you have a legitimate claim against a company, you are better off filing an individual lawsuit (retaining your own attorney if neccesarry) as you'll get more than just coupons off of future service.

I'm not American, I guess 'I'll sue' is not part of my daily thinking process.

I am not against lawsuits and class action lawsuits, but, I tend to think a video game company and an auto maker exist in different worlds too.

Which is dangerous, a poorly made video game, or a poorly made car?

Which is dangerous, a poorly made health product, or a poorly made video game?

Which is a more important service, a power utility, or a gaming service?

I can't blame Steam for covering their asses from overly sue oriented consumers. I would too.

If I was required to sign off on something like this, for something like water to my home, yes, I would be ultimately pissed off. I expect my water to be safe to drink.

If I find I don't like Steam, I ditch them, and tell them they can forget my money. It's not like I can't live without them.

Google Battles Pirates By Burying Search Results

Google will downgrade search results from pirate web sites putting a hurt on people looking for pirated material. »www.businessweek.com/news/2012-0···-content

Google Inc. said it will introduce changes to its search engine that will discourage piracy by placing legitimate copyrighted content higher in online queries.

The company next week will begin using algorithms that push potentially pirated material to a lower position in search results, Mountain View, California-based Google said today in a blog posting on its website.

The new system will use “removal notices,” or complaints from entertainment companies, that a website has received in ranking search results

“So while this new signal will influence the ranking of some search results, we won’t be removing any pages from search results unless we receive a valid copyright removal notice from the rights owner,” Singhal said.

This will hurt pirate sites more than any court actions by RIAA/MPAA.

Nah, pirates are an incredibly adaptable bunch and this is a very low effort workaround. People who haven't already will simply install a browser add-on and/or move to Blekko. This is a fluff move to keep RIAA/MPAA happy.

Thanks for the businessweek link.

They are only doing this to brown nose to the content owners because...
1.) they want the Play Store to be as good as iTunes with as many IPs sold on it.

2.) Google Cable TV in KC will need licenses from the cable stations which all link back to big content.

if it was not for those two things they would continue to give hollywood the finger because nothing would have any pressure on them.

US fines Google $22.5 M for break consent decree on privacy

Google signed a consent decree with the US in 2010 on tracking user activities that is to run 20 yrs. Google broke that consent decree and got fined $22.5 million for that breach. That is only about four hours of revenue for Google, so the amount of the fine is meaningless. But the PR problem is that Google is rapidly leaving behind their promise to "do no evil".

It's funny, this item makes it seem like Google is not interested in piracy, and yet the item on downplaying search results does.

End result, no one is ever going to really think anyone that makes any sort of existence online is ever going to be doing 'enough' to satisfy the people whining that the digital world doesn't care enough about their digital goods.

USB Charger Outlet

So I've seen electrical outlets that have included USB charging holes on sale for $15-$30. I've really been thinking of buying one but my more rational side says this is far too high a price, and it kinda feels like a novelty more than something practical.

Any thoughts?

What would happen if you have a USB plug too close to the AC socket instead of the USB port?

USB just might turn out to be a low-voltage/charging standard and eliminate all the wall warts that get lost like mismatched socks. Not necessarily a novelty.

Beware that gadgets like this sometimes do not permit high enough amperage to charge certain Apple devices.

That's the thing... I'm trying to fight a high amperage outlet so I can charge an iPad with it.

I'm not yet sold on USB duplex outlets. The only legitimate manufacturer marketing them is Cooper, and they aren't getting rave reviews. FastMac's version is UL-listed but reviews are mixed, and I'm not inclined to stuff a massive transformer into an outlet box.

Until the dust settles and we see Leviton selling such a product, I'd stick with something like the Belkin 6-outlet surge suppress #BV106050-CW that fits over an existing outlet and is known to work to charge iPad, though amazingly not officially, and be sure to only plug in one USB device at a time.

The thing is you want the USB where you want the USB. There just not that much wrong with a $4 multi-port adapter you can toss in your travel bag, hand to your guest, or move when you relocate your desk.

And as GraysonPeddi expressed (I think), the example you linked has positioned the ports too close to the AC sockets. I suspect the verdict will always be that AC duplex boxes don't provide adequate real estate for additional stuff.
