But on a personal note... I am not sure how to feel about this. Yes it stinks that people work like this, but in places like China, these are the plum jobs, and without them, these people would have no work and be in deeper poverty. Yes, the working conditions are not ideal. But the low cost of labor has also made electronics more accessible to more people in the West. Remember how expensive TVs, VCRs, stereo systems and computers were in the 1970s and 1980s? We'd never have the kind of penetration with the Internet that we have today if electronic gadgetry was prohibitively expensive.

Americans have never been good at math or science. Most of the real science done here in the 20th century was done by Nazi refugees. Indeed most all of the important breakthroughs in physics during the 19th and 20th centuries was either done in Europe or by Europeans who immigrated to America later. (Indeed, the only reason America got the bomb was because of Jewish physicists fleeing the Nazis).
During the early 20th century America was completely ignored in the sciences -- all the best were in Europe. There were very few "native" Americans who had any influence at all, especially in physics. If you were to walk into a Princeton or Harvard science building during the 40's or 50's you would hear nothing but German accents.
And most of the good science being done here today is done by immigrants not born here. I don't have exact statistics, but I think around 40% of all math and science graduate students in American universities are foreign born.
So the only way America will ever stay competitive at science is to ask more Indians and Asians to immigrate here.
This is not to say "native" American students are too stupid for STEM courses, but they don't have much incentive. Most college students have dollar signs on their mind and the rigor of getting advanced degrees is not worth the economic pay-off. You can do well financially with a 4 year STEM degree, thus going for 4 extra years is not worth it to most people.

I would gladly give you plenty of counterexamples as to American mathematicians who have made an impact in mathematics (which is the foundation for many, many subjects including science).
And, for the record, we have the right to consider whether getting a worthless piece of paper is worth going into the hole. It's the only way to get a job in this economy, regardless of what people say about having a "marketable" skill. In my own personal experience, no place would ever give me an interview because I didn't have that damn piece of paper, even though I have plenty of marketable skills.
So, damned if I go to college, and damned if I don't go to college, one way or another it sounds like Americans JUST don't measure up. I would actually heed your opinion, except most of your opinion is nothing but conjecturing. Provide some sources, citations, some claims to back up your argument, and your conjecture would be valid.

The only reason to go history, English, women's studies, etc., unless you want to be student loan burdened and be lucky to land a $40K job, is if you intend to go for an advanced degree and teach, or to go for an MBA or law degree. Or unless you have your way paved for you in a family business.
It is certainly possible to move ahead and make decent coin with a liberal arts degree, but it will be because you start at your $40K entry level job and work hard and get ahead, not because you are using your college degree.
There are some majors that are tweeners... e.g communications, politics, social sciences. The job market for these is significantly lower in pay but you can make a living. | |

I know lots of GenX age people who have the business/finance degree and are struggling. Yes, if you become a rainmaker or rocket scientist you get the big payoff, but that's like saying if you are a good college basketball player you'll get the big payday in the NBA. The odds are against you. | |

Just go back to the early 1980s and remember how expensive electronics were back them when they were not made like they are in China. You'd be paying $1000 or so for a VCR, $500 for a TV, etc.

| We could probably manufacture in the U.S. and be competitive, if we did not have unions. Union workers work less, provide lower quality products, take sick days when they really are not sick, protect poor performing workers, require paid union stewards who go home to drink during the workday, sabotage products to protest silly crap against their employer, etc. So while it is possible to be competitive against China, union BS here in the U.S. prevents that work from coming back. Hence our declining standard of living here and the massive U.S. debt. While unions at one time provided a much needed service, employment laws and protections have made unions obsolete and unnecessary. The are now a hinderance to jobs and economic growth.

| Not that I would ever wish to be mistaken as liking Apple, but come on, you can't just blindly blame companies giving us what we demand.
Cheapest price at any cost.
If you refused to buy from China/Southeast Asia at all, and not one article or service connected to them in any fraction of participation, the result would indeed be chaos.
But in the end, it would need to be made, and it would not need to be made there, and your customer can only pay you with what they have. The companies can pay the workforce whatever they want, but if your workforce/consumer base can't afford to buy, you priced it too high eh.
A product/service will never cost more than target audience can afford.
Companies are not to blame and unions are not to blame and customers are not to blame, it's North Americans causing the problems for North Americans.
The solution is only as bitter as we have willingly made it.
The day Apple can't get anyone to afford Apple iCrap, is the day they lower the price. | |

The owner always gets most of the money. And you don't even need an education to be a businessman, just smart enough to realise people will pay you to do what they don't want to do.
My advice to people paying for an education, stop applying to fast food, and start up a lawncare operation, or do something creative like errand running for seniors (lots of seniors as people are increasingly refusing to die it seems). It's amazing how much money you can make just starting small.
Generally speaking, most rich didn't become rich without making themselves rich off of people unwilling to be anything other than an employee.
I don't resent the rich becoming rich. You need to just understand the rules of the game people. I don't hate Walmart for selling me shit from China made by people that clearly have no worth to the Chinese government. You empowered Walmart by willingly buying that crap because you're inherently cheap. And then you get annoyed that Walmart isn't interested in being union friendly. Unions aren't a right you know. | |

The Federal Communications Commission has decided not to extend its regulations requiring cable operators that own programming to make that content available to rival pay-TV distributors such as satellite broadcasters.
Known as the program access rules, the regulations were a key part of the 1992 Cable Act and credited with driving the growth of the satellite broadcasting industry.
However, now that DirecTV and Dish are viable competitors to cable, and phone companies such as Verizon and AT&T are also going head-to-head against cable providers, the commission decided to let the rules expire.
DirecTV, Verizon and smaller cable operators fought to keep the rules intact. Google, which is launching its own programming service in the Midwest, also tried to make the case to the FCC that the rules were still important.
"The exclusivity ban served its purpose, but now the facts justifying its existence have changed in favor of consumers," FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell added. "Accordingly, this creaky relic must be shown the door."

| Re: CLEAR possible security breach I think this is not a security breach, but a simple screwup by Clear. I don't see any evidence that their servers were breached or you're being spammed.
I think what happened was that their business process/CRM software somehow had a bad rule or something and decided that some customers who were in good standing were not, and the standard "Hey! Your service is being cut off. Please pay us if you want service." emails went out. Oops. | |

| AT&T DSL Speed Settlement Greetings,
Just wondering how I am going to be spending my big AT&T DSL Speed Settlement check this weekend.
The law suite is from 2010, when AT&T charged full price for slower than listed DSL. Let's see, back then it was about $29.99 a month for 3 month.
So, with my BIG check in hand, $7.80, I'm think McDonald's for dinner...LOL
Anyone else raking in the big bucks??
